A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

So the last thread after I posted about the problems with the Dystopian Wars Kickstarter. This led me to wonder, what does it take to run a successful Kickstarter for a wargame? And more specifically, are finished models needed or can you just have renderings of them?

Has anyone played Maelstrom's Edge? I saw their ad on dakkadakka. I've literally never even heard of this game before but the starter set is about $120CAD and comes with terrain, which seems neat. The models look pretty good imo.

Thinking about it, I've been wondering if a gnoll, raised by humans/elves/dorfs/etc would turn out exactly the same as its brethren as they seem sentient enough to possess tribesman mentality. So if say a travelling mage found a gnoll child and adopted it, how would things turn out?

Should the process of finding and bypassing traps be abstracted to a die roll? Or is it better/more fun/less bullshit to have traps that require player skill, or at least player interaction beyond "I got a 17"?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>50802087
Realistically, what are you going to do? Construct the trap at the table and force the player to disarm it complete with all the consequences?

The absolute best you can do is paint an extremely descriptive picture of how the spotted trap looks and how the characters believe the mechanism operates and based on how close to disarming it their response is, you might be able to skip the die roll entirely, or if it's rather complex: give them a slight + mod because they approached it cleverly. The die should always be central to unpredictability.

Problem with above is there really are a limited number of traps, and unless your group are locksmiths or EOD or the like, will they really truly enjoy a 5 minute briefing and diagram of the trap every time one is encountered? You'll burn through ideas relatively quick, and even if you don't then meta-knowledge of real world systems will always trump whatever trap you've created thus putting us right back to square one.
>>
>>50802087
The problem with having spotting/avoiding/disabling the trap left up to die roll is that it just becomes a gradual hp drain, you walk down the corridor, the GM rolls dice and you occasionally take damage then keep walking, there's no interactivity. The only way to make the players' decisions matter is to make finding or avoiding the traps down to character actions, not rolls, the issue here is that this leads to the whole 'we poke every tile with a 10-foot pole as we advance' sort of solutions and you're back to square one. So there are two options, you either make traps part of a larger encounter (fight off the goblins while avoiding the swinging pendulums) or having in-game time-pressure so there's a reason to not slow yourself down by checking everything as you progress.
>>
>>50802219
The problem with approaching it like that is that there's no risk vs reward aspect.

When you use traps the right way, you don't litter the main path them. You save them for treasure vaults, locked chests, hidden shortcuts, ect. In a way, it's almost obvious there will be traps there, because the potential rewards are too good to be true otherwise... but now the players have to weigh whether looking for those traps and trying to disarm them to get the potential rewards weighs favorably against the chance that they'll activate them.

Any thoughts on this game? Stories?

I've always been interested in it but never had enough friends who played board games to run a game. Now I work in the board game industry and have plenty but don't want to waste money if it's crap.

It's an amazing game. Requires a day to play with breaks. Can be played 3 - 8 player.

I wouldn't recommend 3 player as one person always ends up ganged up on.

Also you need the right type of people to play. It has more salt potential than monopoly.

Also get good storage as set up and packing away can be time consuming otherwise.

The current temperature outside is -10 degrees celcius. All guys will take 0.05 of their maximum hit points in damage every 20 minutes and suffer a -2 agility and dexterity penalty if not wearing winter clothing. This is upped to 0.1 of maximum hit points every 20 minutes and. a -3 penalty in agility and dexterity for those raised in tropical climates. This is further upped to 0.2 of their maximum hit points in damage every 20 minutes and a -4 penalty to agility and dexterity for all reptilian. Individuals who are anthropomorphic wolves, seals, deer and bears take no damage and no penalties.

If you are armed with a cutting weapon and faced with an opponent whom you do not want to die, always remember that a valid option is to cut off said individual's hand which bears said weapon. This move is called the Cho Mai and it is an effective way of neutralizing a foe without taking said foe's life.

I don't know. I'm not weird like you.

I've got an interesting situation here, /tg/.

I DM a game in a complex setting. Basically, this world is so xenophobic that towns don't even associate with another. A sort of willful ignorance so powerful that a kingdom could be a mere day's travel from the village you grew up in, but you would never know it. Now, the issue.

One of the PCs had a vendetta against a clan of orcs, so the party went in to exterminate them. They were heavily outnumbered, and they knew that, but wanted to take the risk anyway. Long story short, two of the party members died, and they had no way of knowing when they'd next see a priest, or if they'd find one in time for them to be resurrected. One of them had a brilliant idea though.

A while back, they met an extremely powerful necromancer. Not the "raise the dead to fight for me" kind, more the "I want to master the balance between life and death" kind. He helped them out a bit for some coin, explained that he's a little bit of research from ascending the need for a mortal body and becoming ethereal, and then, before they parted ways, they established a means of contacting one another for long distance, in case they needed his help again.

So the PC called him, explained the situation, and then said this, and I quote:

>"I know that you are basically a demigod at this point, and I have little that I could offer that would be worth your time. So I offer you this: we owe you a favor, no matter how big or small, to be cashed in at any time. We will drop everything to aid you, so long as you bring my friends back to life."

A teleport spell and a few incantations later, the party is back to life. Now here's my question. What would someone so powerful ask as a favor from them? I've been racking my brain, but I can't think of anything.

Are there any places this 'demigod' cannot actually go? Maybe he needs something from Baator, but hell itself has denied him entry due to either his nature, or because he fucked with life an death. Maybe he needs materials from Sigil, and he's barred entry due to his now divine nature

They are so good it's hard to fail with them. They are the ideal melee unit. Inexpensive enough to spam them, fast and sturdy enough to get where they need to go, and even enough melee power to take on most targets unlike things like Chaos Spawn which are frail or Khorne Fleshhounds which can be tarpitted by things like Ironclads.

Simply run them at a target they're able to damage, and you will likely intercept them and maybe even kill them.

For extra durability, run them in the Canoptek formation. However, having to operate within the limits of that formation sorely restrict their ability to spread out or separate, and move at will. However it can be worth it for the extreme durability increase. Probably better used for defensive purposes or as things to soak up shooting, rather than chasing down targets.

I used the Shockmaster in my campaign as a gag just because one of my players has a WWE-tier backstory.

It's a terrible idea.

My Ventrue in a VtR game had Patrick Bateman as a don't-know-the-word-but-embraced-by-the-same-person-guy NPC. It went terrible. I felt stupid whenever the GM used him.
>>
>>50800823
Whenever I do "fight arena" plot-arcs in my games, I always make sure to base at least one of the opponents on a real-world wrestler or MMA fighter. It usually works OK as long as they're just a minor NPC and not the campaign's BBEG or anything.

Hey /tg/. So I'm going to be DMing a 5E group of some friends from fraternities and sororities when I get back to college in January. Problem is, every last one of the players are completely new and have no clue what the fuck they're doing. One girl thought she'd have to dress up, another had never seen a d20 in his life before. Any advice on DMing a group like this?

Don't Start with a basic adventure possibly something pre-writhen. Don't enforce role play unless they are comfortable with it. Invite a veteran that is cool with surrendering the spotlight so that the new guys get the idea but they have a time to shine themselves. Don't and this is A VERY big don't take them if the encounter goes south fudge it.
>>
Matt Colville has made some useful videos just about that.

Basically, his advice is that before you even consider playing a real campaign you should play a short one night "tutorial" game, with them playing with premade characters.
