FF8 is a fantasy setting with urban/modern aesthetics. The main themes are it's military theme (you are from a military school the hires out its students to soverign nations and villages to do things from fight monsters to bodyguard work).

The magic you have access to is essentially the watered down version of real magic which can only be done by a sorceress such as Edea and, if you really want to get into it. Time Travel is a big component as well.

As for running a game in setting? The over-all threat of a sorceress wanting to collapse all of time and space is virtually ended (or is it?) but there are still plenty of geo-political situations to deal with. I don't think just because Ultimecia wearing Edea as a sexy milf meat suit and fucking the Galbadian Government in the ass changes the fact that they still occupy that town who's name I can't remember and on top of that you just had a Lunar Cry which brought a fresh batch of super strong monsters from the moon and the re-building of Trabia region and it's garden.

So you imagine you and your mates are driving down the road when alll of a sudden a T-Rexaur sideswipes you and you find yourself re-enacting the scene from Jerassic Park except the T-Rexaur has been modified to be remotely controlled by some terrorist group looking to usurp the power of the old Trabian government and preventing you, SeeD from aiding in the task of helping it get back on it's feet and mending diplomatic ties with Galbadia.

「Faces」
Stand owned by a mob boss. Allows him to swap 'faces' (meaning reputations) with people using masks that appear in the same way as pucci's stand discs. While he will at first contact be treated by people as they would the original person, acting too far out of line (e.g., taking the 'face' of a physicist but not knowing basic physics) will cause the reputation of that face to decline.

「Spirit Of Survival」
Stand of the leader of a wolf pack, enabling it to obtain the abilities of enemies it defeats, including stand powers (however this does not usually include the physical form of the stand, only what its ability is).
Second one's a bit OP, but is intended to be a recurring side villain that gets more powerful as they go along. Balanced by only being able to obtain powers at a certain rate due to needing to win the fights and being dumb and not using powers tactically.

Personally, I like the FFG one the most. The quirky dice make all rolls two-dimensional, compared to the one-dimensional D&D approach. The main book for either Edge of the Empire or Age of Rebellion will get you started. Should hit the tone of a Rogue One style adventure easily.

How do you play Strahd effectively? My level 8 party nearly kicked his ass, and this will not do. They don't even have the sun sword yet. To be fair, he didn't use most of his spellslots, but they still did unexpectedly well.

Always set up strahd to have the upper hand. Throw the heroes in a pit, cover the area in bats, give ways to get the jump on them. A good way I found to prolong his life is really spamming his transform to a bat form so he can hide away a few rounds and regen, then fling a fireball. Send some vampire spawns to grapple everyone, nothing scares the shit outta the party more than getting blood sucked.
Also remember to account for that secret weapon he has in the tower in ravenloft

Fuck no. In my experience, Homebrew is universally awful. It's kinda like that whole thing where 95% of people think they're smarter than the average person... except in this case it's 100% of Homebrewers thinking their Homebrew isn't unbalanced, out of place, weeaboo, or just plain shit when 99% of it is. Kinda like how That Guys never realize they're That Guy.

40k is "cool" but as a universe its much inferior and nonsensical than StarWars.
BL clearly isnt helping with marysue in every fucking books and power levels all over the place.

I much prefer WHFB fluff (not sure about AoS as its too young yet) compared to the 40k one.
And that comming from someone that never bought a whfb model and have 50k point combined across most armies for 40k.

Been looking for D&D Mainly, got a lot of down time between my own sessions and trying to fill the need to roll some d20s. I'll give Actual Play a shot.

I get where yer comin' from, but here's da fing, boss: I don't think you'll get anyfing near acceptable quality by using DAS and resin to recast stormtroopers. Part of what makes the molds work is flexibility. This can range from the soft Velveeta-like consistency of Micro-Mark's "1-to-1" products, which reproduce detail nicely but tear easily, to the freaky stretchiness of Aluminlite High Strength 3, which may have serendipitously just become my new favourite.

Additionally, you should be warned that some kinds of modern synthetic clay will actually try to bond with Citadel's styrene, so you might have to be prepared to sacrifice your masters if you pick da wrong stuff.

Hopefully I can wrap up the people part of my big D&D project at the moment before I have to clear off the table for Christmas. After that it's down to the bases which I hate painting but oh well.

Step 1: be a cool dude
Step 2: if you actually know outdoorsy stuff and can irl guide them through the woods more competently than just following a trail you're already 200% better and more immersive than any larp npc I've ever seen. So try and do that.

I'd handle it like I handle typical NPCs, when there is a thing to do, going to speak with some NPCs, gotta clear a dungeon, or bring about the end of an evil individual, let them do it.

Also maybe something good is only express the character when asked about it, give off a past of a season warrior maybe someone will ask you about it. Basically be a part of the environment, lore to fill the air etc.

If you can, go check out the woods they play in (if you haven't already) in advance. Put some mental notes, if you wish.

Go with the "I know these parts well" -type of character, as the role of ranger very much is. Talk about the scenery when you go past it, but let that be it. If they ask about your character, have some answer skeletons at hand, ask your friend for possible pointers on that.

And as >>50808527 said, don't initiate things on your own, just be a guide through the woods.

Overshadowing should not be too much of a problem, because unless you start initiating things on your own, keeping silent (save saying a thing or two about the woods) and looking tough is enough to give an aura of a well-versed ranger.

Best yet, plan some routes through the woods with your friend, so that you can actually lead and ask your friend if there are any landmarks to keep an eye out for.
