Looking to try a new pen and paper system with my tabletop group. We tend to enjoy more narrative quests and experiences over a system more focused on combat.

We've really enjoyed Dark Heresy, 13th age, and the Force and Destiny Star Wars expansion. We disliked the Starship Troopers rpg, Halo Rpg, and Deathwatch.

Any suggestions /tg/?? Particularly Sci fi, but any will do. Average group size is 3-4 people.

>>
>>50885153
FateCore isn't for everyone, but it's certainly worth trying. It's easy enough to use just the core rules for a sci-fi game, but you could also use homebrewed hacks (like the one attached).
>>
Albedo. It's hard sci-fi, has excellent character creation, and is perfect for tactical gunfights.
Has personality traits woven into the character sheet, and becomes a PTSD simulator very quickly.
The published scenario is a crew trying to survive in a derelict ship before rescue arrives, with big emphasis on friction between characters.
Also furry.

I think it'll fit like a glove, but I'd like some info about what you liked in your previous games. DH and DW are as close as two systems can be, while F&D is vastly different.
>>
>>50885207
Thank you, I'm going to look through that pdf in a few minutes !

>>50885309
I guess the reason we much preferred Dark Heresy to Deathwatch was the simplicity of playing humans over Space Marines. We enjoyed the smaller scale investigations of the local acolytes over the grand adventures of a kill team. We also found the example enemies and encounters didn't balance well with only having 2 or 3 players in a group. I am very interested in your suggestion though!

So I'm perusing the DH 2.0 rules for the Untouchables.
Their Psychic Null talent is allowed to be bought multiple times with no stated limit based on anything. It just says they can stack. The first one adds +20 on Psy Evasion and counts as Deny the Witch. Any additional time adds +5 on the roll.

This is crucial, /tg/. Does this mean, by the rules of Dark Heresy 2.0, that if I rolled on a psy evasion roll, these would give me a bonus? Like say I rolled a 2. I'd have my standard ole Willpower bonus against the enemy psyker in the event we both succeed.
If I had Psychic Null taken 3 times for a +30 benefit, and Resist (Psyhic Powers) for another +10, would that mean success would just be easier to get, or would it also mean in the event of a success, I'd have a +4 Willpower Bonus?

If it's just a bonus on roles to evade or oppose psychic powers, that's cool. But it'd be amazing if additional purchases meant you could compensate for a lack of a rolled willpower bonus.

You'd be better served asking 40k rpg questions in the 40k general, anon.
But when you have bonuses to tests, those bonuses are for the tests, they do not count as additions to your attribute. In this case, you would have, from talents, a bonus +40 to the Willpower/Agility test, before penalties are applied.
They would give you a higher cap on Degrees of Success, but would not (virtually) increase your Willpower attribute, or increase your WP bonus unless the ability expressly says it does so, like Unnat Attributes.
>>
>>50883456
I'll post in WH40 generals next time then, my apologies.

Ahh. Well okay then. They're just bonuses for tests.

Further rules clarification: What is the maximum benefit a bonus may give you? Supposing you had the minimum required for the talent, suddenly any roll of 60 and below nets you a single success in resisting psyker powers. Resistance; Psyker gives another +10.
If you bought this talent 8 times, suddenly any roll of 99 or lower should net a single success. Unless suddenly 100s miraculously stop being an automatic failure.
But can you buy more and make those count? I mean, in a normal scenario, the bonuses are redundant. But what if you want to offset the difficulty around you?
Could you purchase it enough to offset possible penalties? Like say you were preoccupied. Suddenly the GM rules you get a -60 penalty to your roll. If you happened to buy Psychic Null 12 times after that, a total of 20 times, would that mean virtually any roll still counts as a single success? Or would a penalty of -60 mean you can only succeed on the percentile dice on a 40 or lower?

What about if you jacked the bonus up so high that even rolling a 99, your roll counted as if you rolled low enough to use your entire Willpower Bonus because you rolled so far under the target number? Would that be possible?
Or worse, what if we assume the bonus is so high that even rolling a 99, you still reap the entire rewards of your Willpower Bonus? So no matter whom attacks you, they still would not only need to succeed their roll, but land as many successes attacking you as you get evading them.
In theory that'd mean 4 for a rinky dink willpowered character, up to 12 for a guy with max willpower. Not counting augments or mutations.

I mean it'd cost you a minimum if 9,600 EXP, but the hard rules do seem to indicate player characters could do it.

Because I'm a bit of a cheeky cunt I'm planning on running a mission for my group that's essentially "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and seeing how long it takes for them to notice.

>Joan Jarry, student of philosophy, found dead in her apartment. What's strange is that despite the entire apartment block has burnt down, her body is in perfect condition, and so is the floor directly underneath it
>The cops were called by her boyfriend, Max K Alva, a medical student at a nearby prestigious university, who was expecting to go on a date with her. He's acted extremely suspiciously all throughout the interview.
>A search of Jarry's apartment will uncover books about Things She Should Not Know.
>Mentions of a "Malleus Argenti" are frequent in one edition, an artefact that has some apparent unfortunate cosmic powers. In Jarry's diary there's references to Max and her together torturing, killing and raping a fellow student.
>Max hangs himself before the agents can get to him.
>In the morgue, Max's body starts to move.
>The agents must hunt down and destroy the corpse before it finds the Malleus Argenti
>if the agents fail to do so, Max begins tearing holes in reality with it, ushering in Uninvited Guests to the world

How does that sound?

Don't have Max being that much of an obvious suspect, make the research more of a roleplaying/investigation session. Max isn't really a threat yet, he's just some cultist human albeit a smart one and will take steps to hinder the PCs' research or destroy clues but isn't a physical threat to the players. He may even create false leads to send them on wild goose chases?

This changes once they've caught him and he turns into something clearly inhuman. Now they're dealing with a supernatural monster with abilities from beyond the pale.
And since Max came back from the dead to continue serving these nefarious machinations, Joan probably won't rest easy for long... She might even be the eldritch entity's primary servant and brains of the operation.
>>
>>50883008
That's pretty cool. The only problem is that I have no idea how to make an investigation session fun.

And then there's the problem of my group. The group I run with are four nice gents who I suspect fundamentally misunderstand the system.
>Hotel rolled a thug who became a priest as part of witness protection. Hotel thought that the bonds system was stupid as "that's not how relationships work" and because his character had no friends or family to speak of, had just one bond, with God, as a 30-strength bond.
>Bravo rolled a doctor who was researching psionics and "got some". His character was a 25 year old German gun-nut with blue hair and mild latent mind reading.
>Quixote rolled a Chinese-American former soldier with excellent disguise and stealth skills. Not much personality, but pretty good.
>Delta rolled a skinny semilolsorandumb hacker character.

Now I managed to get things roughly in motion. I was seriously considering asking Bravo to reroll, but ended up deciding that his character has to take a 0/1d3 SAN check more or less at my liasure to hear the unfortunate thoughts of the people she's talking to. I allowed Quixote to have a 80% stealth skill because I'm dumb. And because Im a doormat in real life and I live with Hotel, I didn't have the heart to say no. Furthermore, Hotel is very gunshy about roleplaying. He's keen, really really keen, but afraid to get into it and so I tried to lead him in but for the most part Quixote and Delta ran the show and Bravo had a lot of seizures.

I was thinking of just giving them that list of 800 prerolled chars and telling them to pick one. What strategies do you have for getting ppl in the mood, and also not to be mild thatguys?
>>
>>50883148
I think making adjustments and adaptions to the campaign is more preferrable than just taking player characters behind the shed and ice them, at least if they're not obvious train wrecks.

Dunno how the rule system works, but if that Hotel dude has no affiliation/relation to the other characters he might just be a new transfer from another cell of the organisation?
