So I've been talking with my family about how one day I'd like to get involved in BoN or some other form of full-contact armored sporting combat and so my dad, being both loving and marginally impulsive, bought me a set of Amazon Prime-tier chain mail(le) for Christmas (pic related, exact product). It's not bad quality actually, a bit formless and with some loose links that I had to fix with some pliers, but otherwise a proper length and pliable enough to fit plenty of layers underneath. I've taken this as a sign to start putting together my own armor. I'm not thinking about helmets or anything plate yet, just putting together a surcoat and a gambeson.

Problem is I've never done anything like this, never done cosplay and I'm basically unskilled in tailoring. Are there any larpers or re-enactors here willing to give a few tips so I can avoid making any expensive mistakes?

I've done a few ACL events, so I can chime in about the kit.

You may have made a mistake already if the mail isn't riveted. Butted mail is a joke and will give you zero protection.

Mail in Bohurt is not for game purposes but protection purposes in case some asshole actually brings a sharpened weapon (russians do this abit) or a weapon snaps and becomes razor sharp on impact.

Padding is the least expensive part of kit IMO. Never gets dented, needs replaced or worked on.

Surcoat is a team thing. You only get to use the team one, so don't bother with one if you aren't on a team.

Gambesons are a dime a dozen. I can recommend half a dozen sites, KultofAthena, Gambeson.pl, AgeofCraft, SharukhanMarket, Outfit4Event, or any other site. If you wanna go super cheap, even a $50 one off Ebay will work just fine. Be aware your gonna have to make and sew your own arming points on. Its easy, but you don't do it till you have the armor and know where they need to go.
>>
>>50891494
Don't get me wrong, I have no illusions about being able to use this in anything ACL, mostly I just want to finish the rest of the outfit. In my mind, putting in the effort to have a mostly-functional kit of armor is better than being that guy who has a mail shirt in his closet. Case in point, this stuff is textbook basement-dweller butted mail, it will probably never see combat on purpose unless our resident clown friend ever convinces me to start larping.

These websites are really useful though, thanks. What do you tend to use for legwear and footwear for ACL events?
>>
>>50891637
I usually wore some under armor under the pantaloons or whatever medieval people called pants. Then leg padding, leg armor tied onto a body harness doublet, medieval shoes and then armored sabatons over those.

Any other info you'd have on medieval village life would be helpful too.

Depends on what you mean by "cusp of the industrial revolution" are we talking like end of the colonial era or full Victorian?

if former, maybe spies in an American Revolution type setting + magic. For the other steam punk shadow run.

I'm working on a list for my cube and decided to start over.

I guess there are EDH cubes, Standard/Block/Modern cubes, and then potentially Pauper cubes or other types?

I'm thinking I want to do probably just a 60 card format, with a medium tier power level. No crazy money cards except maybe one or two in each color and some mana rocks. Say like 15 bucks tops and an average of 4 bucks or something.

1.What quantity of cards have you included in your 60-card format cubes for like 4-6 players, and what proportion of colorless to colored cards? My shitty prototype was like 540 cards or something. I realize I have to probably cut this down to like 400 or something.

2. Did you put in duplicates?

3. What are the problems you ran into/advice about the ratio of Creatures to Sorceries to Artifacts, etc. ?

I'll be mostly using cards since 2012 and a few older pet cards here and there. I don't have top tier cards like Force of Will.

Also, Cube thread.

I feel like a good cube has to be very focused. Like hyper synergized and then revised multiple times. Or maybe not, what do I know.
>>
Start at 360 cards for 8 players for 40-card decks; adjust cube size appropriately for number of players. For typical Limited decks, non-land ratios are 1/3 non-creatures and 2/3 creatures. Find some way to provide each player with about ~6 pieces of easy-to-play land-based color fixing; this means for 8 players, you will want at least 48 dual lands; 60 is great.

Sit down and pick out what you want every color pair deck to look like. Typically every color pair has a primary strategy and some secondary fall-back strategy if the primary doesn't pan out. It's much easier if you focus on five color pairs when picking out cards; with ten color pairs one or two will inevitably be weak. Decide if you want artifacts/colorless to be a deck.

Once you know what decks/archetypes are going to exist then you need to link those decks and archetypes together using cards. Each archetype will also require some number of "anchor" cards that will be great for that deck but be careful not to include too many build-around cards that only go in one deck and are otherwise last-picks - a good anchor card that is solid for an archetype is like Tuskguard Captain - good in an archetype, not useless outside of it. "Pivot" cards are good in multiple archetypes like removal but unless you want a "good stuff" deck to exist too many pivot cards are bad for Cube.

Break singleton, it's the best way to push your archetypes by having multiples of solid anchor cards.

Multicolored Cube fucking sucks. Minimize the number of multicolor cards in your Cube and make them either anchor and/or pivot cards - never make them build-around cards because they will rot.

Don't fucking buy real cards for Cube. Buy a color printer and a paper cutter.

My friend can be a very frustrating character maker in games. Ran a campaign a few years ago were they tried to submit a character with split personality disorder with 5 different personalities each of which was a different class. Shot that down pretty damn quick. Instead they just made a murder-hobo wizard and decided they had been married to a plot essential NPC the whole time.

What does /tg/ think of putting a mana system in a pen and paper RPG, and if you were to implement it, how would you make it work.
24 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Simple. Base Mana Pool, Mana-regen each round, and each spell has a mana-cost.

I think it'd work better than all the spell-slot shit to be honest.
>>
>>50886851
>how do you use the one system that's more bland than 5e's open slot system?
I'd make it work by using literally anything else. Physical fatigue/damage, charges, skill use, the list goes on of actually interesting and/or tactically-minded systems.
>>
You have a pool of mana that you use for spellcasting and supernatural feats, the pool restores completely on short rests, and a mage's most important equipment stat is mana increases. Mage the class gets "Affinity", a passive that reduces all spell costs by 1 mana, meaning their maximum damage nova is largely unaffected and so will remain in relative balance (High-octane spells have high mana costs, lowering them by 1 isn't a huge deal) but a full caster won't burn through their entire reserve firing off 2-mana magic missiles. Lets the casters rely on their 'cantrips' and keeps martial-casters in balance as well.

>>50886892
Done before, turn-by-turn regen is a fustercluck of numbers tracking that still won't achieve the feel you're looking for.

How would Western feudal kingdoms accept a somewhat institutionalized band of adventurers? Being busy with a war against other kingdoms but still having internal issues, like monstrous creatures or thieving?

Got me thinking, anyone played/invented races where the dimorphism (either sexual or just from different breeds) would prohibit them from pursuing certain careers, or even being unable to be an adventurer?

I'm talking above and beyond drow/sun elf differences and more like different dog breeds, eg chihuahua or mastiff.

In most insect species with queens, all of the workers (and warriors) are non-reproducing females, sterile or not depending on the specific species. Males are called drones and are just living sperm storage that tend to die after mating but aren't too different from female workers. If the rogue was a drone, swapping genders more likely just gained her a brand new stinger. Or they could be based on termites, who don't follow the above rules.

If you want a little guy to suddenly become a big girl, a species of spider people could accommodate that.
>>
>>50885415
Insect-brew race wasnt exactly 2 legged irl insects per se. They were meant to be semi eusocial, where a breeding pair emitted hormones which drove off other females and made other males sterile and compliant. When the male dies, the effect wears off, and the males duke it out until a dominant malet emerges. As they developed civilisation, the bug-purge was replaced by a more formal tourney-like competition to decide who gets to bone for the rest of his life.

Player was working with DM to find an excuse to compete in one of these. Now it looks like she'll have one fought over her instead...

So for Christmas, one of my gifts was a Furioso Dreadnought. Despite the fact I play codex marines, I find Furiosos to be awesome as hell and he is currently in the process of being built and painted.

However, I have no idea if in lore if any space marine chapter happens across a dreadnought shell either empty or its occupant still alive, and adopt/incorporate them into the chapter. I'd like to have a cool reason to why my chapter has something they would not normally have access to.

Blood ravens It was a gift.
>>
>>50884566

They'd probably want to return it to the Blood Angels or its associated successor Chapter because taking up the arms of dead brothers without intent on returning those relics is poor form.

Sons of Medusa get a lot of crap for that, which shows it's not prohibited, but frowned upon. And who says anything that's frowned upon is not permitted? It adds flavor when your chapter has a black spot against them, they don't have to be perfect and shining paragons and can have a little bit of dirt behind their ears.

Otherwise, it might be a gift for some reason or another, lost to the annals of Chapter history or recorded and legitimized by the Blood Angels or successor chapter for heroic deeds performed.
>>
>>50884566
I would say that the overwhelming majority of Marine chapters would not let a Dread just sit there.

They'd most likely first attempt to return him to his parent Chapter, if it still exists, and THEN attempt to incorporate him into their Chapter should that be impossible/against the Dreads wishes.

Dreads are extremely revered and/or respected, if only because of their age and value. They'd make every effort to return him to his brothers, at bare minimum to ingratiate themselves into the other Chapters good standing.

I've never played or even know anyone who plays dungeons and dragons style games, where you sit around and come up with a story but it always sounded fun to me.
