I'll be DM'ing my first session of 2020 soon /tg/ and was wondering if you had any advice. Are there certain things I should avoid outright, tweak so that the game isn't broken, etc.?

This is the first time I will be DM'ing 2020 or anything for that matter, and the first time my players will be playing 2020 as well.

First, congratulation for your excellent taste!

Now, to your question. Cyberpunk 2020 is a pretty old game. Therefore, many people with many different tastes and expectations have played and modded it. Some added crunch, others simplified the system, etc. Even if you ask here, people will give you different and contradictory advices.

My first advice is to play the game as it is, first - it works. Have your player do a short and simple campaign that will let them explore the game world and the different options that are available to them (cyberware, drugs, guns, vehicles...). This way you can identify the things that bother YOU and your players. You can then search for mods to fix them.

Pretty much everyone comes to develop a set of houserules for this game, but like >>51162798 suggests you really have to find what suits you. Personally I never liked the career system and let players built their own, for example. If I would give some advice, it's that you should be very careful incorporating the sourcebooks without putting some checks in place first.

That with the sourcebooks would have been a next tip. The "flavor" of the different sourcebook doesn't really match. Also, the info found can be contradictory.

Ex. Home of the Brave starts by saying that the USA are completely broke, but then it explains how its military is super-powerful and can easily destroy any corporation - that soldiers would be payed like only every three months, that there is no money for spare parts for jets and submarines, that pilots cannot fly because theres no jetfuel, that computer systems didn't get any upgrade during the last 5 years, etc. is completely missing. Deep Space pushes it even further by describing the NASA as a super-powerful organization, the only space agency on earth with kickass military spaceships, not even the ESA has - we don't exactly understand how the Euros could gain the supremacy of orbit with only some shitty transport shuttles and cutters.

Another example is the rulebook saying that Earth is completely polluted - oceans have become oily swamps, birds have died, etc. Yet, the Night City sourcebook claims that the beaches of Night City are good to swim - we're not speaking of swimming pools, but of the ocean. Somehow, Night City is completely broke and can barely maintain one police station, the US government is broke, but the beaches can be cleaned and the water purified so people can go swimming? Some people will say that it's a tourist attraction. But what tourists do you hope to attract in the world's most dangerous city?

On the agenda for today: the druids have filed a formal protest about our plan to destroy the moon. I didn't even know those mud-covered treehugging savages could write, but I'll read off of the document they sent: "The decision to destroy any part of nature, be it the lowly ant or the mighty oak, must always be carefully weighed. This responsibility and caution is the price of power, whether that power be divine, mundane, or arcane. When a forest is leveled so that man can erect a city, it is always a tragedy, but sometimes it is a grimly necessary one, only if the benefits outweigh the costs. We druids cannot imagine anything worth destroying the moon for, but if there is such a benefit that justifies throwing all of the ocean's waves into eternal chaos, certainly it would not be so that a guild of insane wizards can vivisect werewolves to see how their internal organs work without having to worry about impromptu transformations because they lose track of the time."

Obviously the druids have no idea how important our werewolf vivisection work is, but the political ramifications of this protest are significant. What should we do?

We just simulate a moon during the interim. Gravity spells, false light, and so on.

Or just put out a time stop, excluding everything within the boundaries of the Guild's halls. They can't transform if the moon's phases and positions don't change.

Or, just phase the test laboratories onto another plane, where there is no lunar cycle.

My Attempts so far included an ultra marines successor that was from a culture that adored the human form, so they hated chaos, and any xenos (all of them) that resembled humans, as they were a mockery of the human form, however this also included Astartes, so they were ashamed of what they were, but knew they had to be Astartes in order to protect humanity

The Second was a Blood Angels successor that was obsessed with fire, home planet of tribals that thought memories were trapped in blood, and through burning you could wash those memories, and any sin or crime, from yourself. this evolved into them seeing death company marines as holding some of Sanguinius inside of them, and would honor them by burning them alive in order to return those memories to Sanguinius in hopes of bringing him back, this got them in a lot of trouble.

Worldbuilding.

How the fuck do I keep it organized?

My group has talked me into writing an actual fucking prequel novella to the campaign, because I am a fruity shitheel and they like how I make world good, and now there's so much stuff to organize and keep relevant and a 356 year timeline with notable dates by month-

-and it's all just sitting in a great ugly wodge in a word document, going nowhere and getting nothing written or played. How the hell do you guys organize the document that your worldbuilding's in?

Make a map, build up each area individually. From there, you form how the areas interact and impact each other and have those events be relevant enough to be remembered. Boom, you set up a series of canvases for you to build a multitude of stories on multiple settings that have an effect to some degree on each other.

I've got a whole Church.government structure, and an ecology and trade system, and a timeline, and without figuring out some way to sort it it's just a long pile of bullet points.

I tried an Obsidian Portal wiki. That went right up its own ass in a hurry.

hey /tg/,

i've started playing a game of 2nd edition D&D. the DM wants it to be a hyper realistic and gritty game of extreme difficulty and is actively trying to kill the players.
assuming its low magic, i wanted to ask what kind of non-magical things i could do to help me survive the dungeon crawl. i would like to talk about some general things first then maybe throw some of the rooms in this crawl at /tg/ to see what they come up with.
creatures in the crawl range from goblins to vampires and so much more.
the party consists of a 15th level paladin/cleric, a 6th level thief/paladin, a 15th level wizard (dont count on him for anything), a 5th level beastmaster ranger, a 5th level fighter, a 6th level monk, a 5th level bard, and a 5th level thief (myself)

i've already worked out some symbols to chalk on the walls, creatures who rely on infavision shouldn't be able to see them.

also, assume i'll probably never see a magic item that isnt my +1 short sword and +1 leathers.

so, any suggestions?

And lamp oil molotov cocktails are a staple.
Decent way to attack, but dropping them in a doorway is great for covering your escape.

i think this is too specific to clog their thread.

on the note of oil, while its not a bad idea, he runs lighting things as like, it takes 1d4 segments to light anything, so throwing a molotov could take 4 segments before i even do anything.

also i've seen him punish people who have a lot of oil. like, literally look at someone's inventory and say, "thats a lot of oil, we have to do something about that"

It's gotten to the point where we've started bitching about bitching about it.
By all means, inject another discussion into it.

So just carry a few. Or keep the oil tightly sealed, plus some empty bottles, then make cocktails between fights.

Laser Guns are weapons that fire a focused, continuous stream of high-energy photons.

Ray Guns are weapons that fire a focused, high-intensity shot of high-energy photons.

Plasma Guns are weapons that launch streams of superheated matter which has achieved a state of plasma.

Light Guns are guns that do not weigh a lot :^)

Phasers are similar to Ray Guns, but use all sorts of radiation, not just light. In Star Trek, they use is called "nadion radiation," a fictional type of radiation.

Blasters are similar to Plasma Guns, but launch more compact bolts of plasma, rather than less compact particle streams.

Ray guns are like laser guns, but they use up more ammo at once to produce a chaotic, inaccurate blast. High damage, high fire rate but they use tons of ammo and have a short clip size.

Plasma is the fourth state of matter; my father, an electrician, sometimes had to deal with the products of a faulty generator, one of them being copper plasma; at night, copper plasma gave him a full sun burn. A gun that shoots plasma would deal incredibly high heat/projectile damage, but would have a very low fire rate. The weapon would also overheat a lot, and very likely such a gun would be incredibly expensive.

A light gun is a laser gun's little brother; for much lower damage, the beam is more accurate and is, well, a beam; continuous fire, and low ammo usage. Still, the damage is lower, so it's best for an automated weapon system that can keep the beam trained on a target.

A phaser, rather than emitting any sort of visible photons, instead fires waves of radiation or radiation, which would be invisible. Hence how firing modes can be changed, since the wavelength of the radiation it fires can be adjusted (set phasers to stun/kill)

A blaster is basically a scientifically augmented 'gun'. It fires projectiles that are superheated, producing a visibly slower bullet, designed to pierce armor that is meant to stop laser weaponry.

It's such a broad question that there's probably countless answers to each one in terms of sci-fi settings, forgive me if I got something wrong

I'm fucked. My GM is running a slasher movie-esque campaign revolving around shitty teenage stereotypes getting murdered. I've ended up being the final girl, and I'm cornered in a driveway by the killer as the police are on their way. A loaded shotgun is a couple feet fro me, but ghostface will filet me like a fucking fish before I get there. Is there anything I can do to distract him? He's notably prideful.

Next session is in a couple of hours. Am I fucked? GM has no qualms with murdering my autistic ass.
