Let's create a chapter of space marines. First roll:

This first question has always felt superfluous to me.

Strategic Prognostication - "Our tarot cards say there's going to be a threat here, maybe. Found a Chapter!"
Ok, moving on to the next question
>When Was The Chapter Founded? (d100)
>>51276272
Put it in the options field.
So how do you recommend someone get into 40k (as in the war-game, not lore or Rouge Trader or whatever).
1. What are the best armies to start with?
2. Any info one should know before starting?
3. Is it worth it?
also, as a side question, how hard is painting minis? Can you be decent at it right off the bat or will you ruin your first few?
Don't. Find a better system. GW is a terrible company and their models are overpriced.
>>51274446
1) GW will usually start you off with Space Marines or CSM. But generally you just look at what's strongest in the meta and pick from those, otherwise you'll lose constantly and wonder why you got into the hobby.
2) Codexes and rulebook can be found in the 40k general, don't waste money on physical copies at £30 a pop. To start with go with a basic force org chart, two troop units and a HQ. Use airfix glue, its a hell of a lot stronger than GW glue.
3) That's a really subjective question. Personally, I say yes because I have a close-knit group of mates who get along, enjoy gaming/painting with each other, are willing to try out new rulesets and cut their opponent a break.
Obviously someone who doesn't have that is going to say no, and someone who hates the game will definitely say no.
Whether or not its worth it depends on how much you make out of it.
As to your side question: You'll always be bad at something when you start off. If you're a bit older and you have an eye for detail, you'll do better. If you start at age 11 like I did and have no prior experience with painting...yeah, you'll fuck up.
The thing to remember is to not get put off by it. Look up painting guides, pace yourself, and thin your paints sufficiently. That way you can go over models you did badly later on when you're a little better.
There's a certain degree of self-improvement too. I'm still not a fantastic painter but I'm at a stage where I'm happy with the level of detail I get on my models and that's enough for me. Some eople just leave their models unpainted, which is also fine.
ll in all, how much you enjoy it depends on you and your mindset.
>>51274467
And don't listen to cynical faggots like this. GW took a dive under Tom Kirby recently but the new CEO is pushing for lower prices and more specialist games, and if the new £30 bundles are anything to go by, he's slowly succeeding.
The problem lies with the shareholders who just want your money.

WHat could be the economical backbone of a pre-industrial swamp village?
why would people live there? what would they eat? how do they make money?
>>51273779
>WHat could be the economical backbone of a pre-industrial swamp village?
There probably wouldn't be one. If there is, it would be some sort of material native to the are which is in high demand elsewhere. Either some sort of plant material (exotic wood, spices, or herbs) or something they're able to dredge up from the murky waters which outsiders can't get at.
They might make leather goods from the local animals. That's where a lot of the money comes from for people who hunt alligators. Though they're sold for their meat as well, a pre-industrial village would probably keep the meat for themselves.
>why would people live there?
They probably got pushed out of their ancestral home and had nowhere else to go, or wound up their by chance and just kind of stopped and set down roots. As the generations went on, their kids stayed because they had nowhere else to go or lacked the skills required to thrive in other environments.
>what would they eat?
Fish, roots, whatever game lives in and around the swamp. Crawfish and gaters, probably.
>how do they make money?
I doubt many of them would. Maybe sell odds and ends to the odd trader that happens through, but most of their possessions are going to be manufactured in the immediate area.
>>51273779
>why would people live there?
Because they have nowhere else to go. Stronger and more numerous tribes have pushed them away from the good lands, leaving them to eke out a living at the swamp.
>what would they eat?
The local wildlife, lichen and moss
>how do they make money?
Drugs, it's the only place where black lotus grows naturally. Also a certain type of bug can be crushed and used to manufacture dyes, making it valuable to city traders.
>>51274235
>Because they have nowhere else to go

We really need one of these for every faction.
So what are your favorite chapters/dynasties/etc. of your favorite armies in 40k?
Why?
I always liked Exorcists and Black Templar but lately I've gone a bit off Black Templar, mainly due to the fact that they seem to be a bit more of an underfoot presence than they used to be.
Might just be me

I really like the Salamanders and Black Templars. 30K Salamanders with the pelts are my favorite of em all. Kind of specific, but Carnifex with stone crusher claws are probably my favorite unit.

>They're as bad as GW at this point.
- GW deliberately kills off models and elevates others so you BUY MOAR. Privateer Press actually does not do this. Buffing underused models and nerfing overused models isn't this. GW literally makes certain models illegal in edition changes.
I'm still using PP models I used 10 years ago on the table today. I can't say the same for my GW armies.

Is there a single fantasy series where Dwarves' animosity isn't warranted?
I would say "The Dwarves", the title might tell you that it won't stop sucking the dicks of this fantasy race.
