/TG/ Why do most game have a simplistic Morality when dealing with Magic? Why is it when a person uses the Dark Arts he is now labeled as Evil? since when did Light=Good and Dark=Evil?
243 posts and 36 images submitted.
>>
>>51285902
Because the Dark arts doesn't refer to physical darkness, but the nature of the magic itself.

Creating a cloud of inky shadows to conceal yourself isn't evil.

Conjuring demons is, because demons tend to steal souls and you're risking the lives of innocents by even bringing them into the world.

Most games have simplistic morality here so that they can have traditional 'bad guy' spells like necromancy and demons exist, but limit the use by players by labeling them as something the system assumes players won't be. The game assumes the players are the good guys and use the beneficial magic that's safe for the people they're saving, and the npcs are the bad guys using the risky dangerous magic that will cause destruction whether on purpose or by accident.

It's a pretty basic concept.
>>
>>51285902
Same reason why being social is good while being anti-social is bad. It goes against the norm. Society and other people expect you to be in line on what other people believe. Those that don't are reviled as evil, freaks, and other such names.

>Game publisher Wizards of the Coast has opened up a digital studio, with the aim of recreating some of its practical properties in a virtual space.

>The studio will be run by a group of 'all-stars" and led by Jeffrey Steefel, best known for his work on The Lord of the Rings Online, according to a blog post from Wizards of the Coast President Chris Cocks. Video game veteran David Schwartz will also come aboard to lead a new publishing team "to explore partnerships and collaborations that will bring Magic and D&D to unexpected settings, genres, and platforms."

>"What would it be like to throw fireballs as a Planeswalker in an MMO, or quest for treasure with your friends in a D&D augmented-reality game?" wrote Cocks.

Thoughts fa/tg/uys. Personally I've been dreaming of an augmented-reality dungeon crawler since Pokemon go but I'm not sure the tech is there.

As a general rule those who game at the LGS are the rejects from other game groups, when my friends and I started tabletop gaming we made the mistake to think that the LGS was a good place to start. Usually you just go their out of necessity, if you're friends with the staff and game there after hours or want to acquire stories for /tg/.

Dear potential DM's. Do you wanna avoid being called "that DM"? You want players to be careful and to not run blindly into encounters and to face consequences but don't wanna accomplish that with TPK? Take a hint from videogames: TUTORIALIZE.

Say you want your party to encounter a dungeon with traps? Well here's how you can do that.

1) Have the first trap they encounter have an obvious trigger. Have there be some broken panels of wood around a slightly raised stone. Have obvious burn/singe marks on a specific area or a part of the room clearly eaten away by acid. This trap should communicate to the PC's that "This dungeon has traps and if you're aware of your surroundings you can avoid them".

2) Have the next trap be more well hidden but nonlethal. A pit trap without spikes, a broken pendulum or just a simple dart/arrow trap that'll rough a player up or make traversal more difficult but won't auto-kill them. This'll teach the players that some traps will be more well hidden than others and that you may not always feed them the answer.

3) When you finally introduce your first bullshit horrible death trap have an enemy fall for it first. Have a goblin or orc or ogre run into a giant wall of spikes or a doorframe that explodes into a fireball spell. It'll communicate that there are traps that're horrible and will kill you dead but when the victim is just a random enemy they're not invested in there will be a sense of fairness there.

From that point on you can feel pretty confident that if players aren't careful or get buttfucked by a falling stone ceiling that's mostly on them and only the most petty or antagonistic players would blame you for something like that.

Nth for Bingo! Now with new tiles!

I like discussing systems that come up with cool stats / traits / attributes for things other than battling and adventuring in a fantasy world.

For example games / systems revolving around social interactions, building and managing a city or country, training pokemons, racing, even things like farming, or fishing, or blacksmithing!

So yeah, "interesting systems that nobody plays" general, I guess.

These are all valid questions though.
>Why THIS cave specifically? Is there something here that they're looking for?
>If the Goblins really are as terrible as the King says why is he sending murderhobos in to clean house? Is the King in league with the Goblin? Are we being set up?
>We may need food and water, where do the Goblins store theirs? Wait, they've got barrels of wine and crates of food? Where'd they get that stuff?
>Is the cave strangely clean? That might mean that the Goblins just got here. Is the cave dirty? Then either the Goblins are slobs or they're planning on relocating soon.
>>
>>51279697
Seriously. Are there GMs in here who DON'T prepare answers to questions like those, or who are so bad at improvising they can't just throw off an explanation and work with it?

My favorite setting is semi-near future after climate change has shaken up the global balance of nations. Third-world USA, palm trees in London, stuff like that.

So imagine how happy I was today to find that some artists made a bunch of images of what London could look like in the future. I've never been, but it looks pretty neat.

Anyway, got any recommendations for books (either RPGs or serious literature) about said coming problems?

I've had some "Worst Case Scenario" ideas

Namely that the thing that fucks everyone over isn't the sea level rise but the increasing desertification of prime crop producing regions. So half the population takes to the newly expanded and more temperate seas in floating mega-structures while the rest herd into haphazardly constructed arcologies inland.

Just need to cram it into a suitably cyberpunky system and I should be able to run a game for it.

My group has a person working on a doctorate in Oceanography, one guy with a masters in Agri-science, and myself being another grad student in geology so I might be pandering to the audience a little in this setting instead of going on hard realism
