I've found myself in an argument. It boils down to this:

>If a game isn't a sandbox game, then that's railroading

Which I disagree with.

Here's how it breaks down in my opinion:

>Sandbox
Players are given the setting and a Beginning point. They choose their own Middle and End and the GM essentially becomes a simulator

>Campaign
The players are given a Beginning, and the End is hinted at, implied, or obscured, but can usually be roughly extrapolated from the Beginning. However the Middle is up to the players, and the details of the End can change drastically because of this

>Railroad
Exactly like Campaign, except that the players are (through many many means) forced into a Middle of the GMs choosing, therefore influencing the End to be what the GM expects and wants as well.

To be clear, I'm not trying to say one type of game is better than the other, either of the first two serve their purposes and we can all agree that Railroading is bad.

However this person is refusing to see the Campaign style of game. In their opinion, if the GM places players in a situation or location to begin with, and then introduces them to some sort of overarching quest or storyline, expecting them to follow the hook, that's railroading.

I like your idea OP. It really seems that most campaigns are composed of the standard story arc's beginning middle and end, complete with the whole "hero's story" revolving around level 1 characters where you come from a place that allows for a lot of exposition and finds a mentor that improves them etc. etc.

The problem I find is that a lot of GMs will make a railroad out of a campaign when they see the game approaching territory they don't want, or when the players want to drop the current storyline and do something more sandboxy where they pursue their own goals.

Railroads aren't dangerous, in fact they CAN be fun, as long as the story's good. Even without any player agency it can be seen as "solving the GM's puzzles" and the story is secondary to the game.

I GM only sandbox games, because I find simulationist experiences to be interesting and give rogue-like sense of adventure and storytelling.

hey guardfag here, in case anyone wanted this I did all the mathhammer for probabilities on all the imperial guards heavy weapons against vehicles to show what did well against what

theres a lot of fun numbers to crunch through but basically for its points Multilasers do best againt AV10, autocannons do best against everything else except for av14 since you can field 2 ACs for every LC you run

im sure other people with way better skills in formatting have done this before but i made it myself for a project im working on so i thought id share.

Help. What do I do? I feel like the rest of they guys don't really care about this as much as I do because they're nice dudes but fuck it makes me feel like shit on multiple levels. I'm literally "That guy" who plays charismatic characters and then sounds like a fucking idiot when he talks.

How do you guys get less awkward when you're roleplaying? Do I need to just not care about how cringy I sound and just go with it since everyone else is having fun?

is this still real? it seems like in 2E mages are just generically good but every other splat can wipe the floor with them in their specialty. mage supremacy feels dead, a combat-focused Thyrsus used to be able to solo werewolves, now it's like, well maybe you could take a changeling, if you're both starting characters and you had six hours in advance...
