What are some good ways different systems use to implement dual wielding? I don't think 3.5/pathfinder/5e do a very good job at it at all.

It shouldn't be as simple as "2x the swords 2x the attacks!"

dual wielding becomes much more "realistic" in a system that has a viable parry or active defense mechanic. Having an effective one of those gives a reason to use your offhand weapon for something other than just a second attack. I like Savage worlds for this. Active defense is generally not required in that system to avoid getting hit but it is definitely viable.

You could also impose damage penalties to using two weapons and justify it with not being able to put your full force behind each blow, etc, but be prepared for players to hate it.
>>
In my hoomebrew, dual-wielding simply allows an attack from either weapon with the off-hand weapon providing +1 AC to melee attacks. Dual wielding is meant to be defensive.
>>
WFRP gives the most realistic dual wielding mechanic.

Would it be possible that the fashion* of the classical era survived into the middle ages?

>Fashion is perhaps the wrong word.

It sort of did. In the Byzantines, at least. Not to mention the whole 'bright colours' thing. Bright colours were hard to maintain, and some rare, so the Greek's love of utter gaudiness and looking like a passing gay pride parade survived. Beyond that, I doubt it.

I'll admit to not knowing much about medieval fashion, but modern fashion evolved on the back of use. Men's clothing, especially, is based on military clothing about 30-40 years late. Women's has sort of started branching out, but most clothes follow a pattern and can sort of be traced back to one 'style' of garment that was used or worn in a certain way, with a particular styling.

If you mean armour, well, no. Sorry. Not really. A lot of roman stuff can ultimately be traced back to those filthy dog fucking greeks, at least ins mall portions. But things started developing in the technological sense in the 'middle' period, with development really taking off at the end of it.

Everyone in the classical era dressed the same, with no difference from Spain to Persia, and no changes over the centuries?

Well ain't that something.

Could not you make it look classical? Looks like a hoplit, but uses modern weapons and armours like chain mails.

Is this worth reading to get some ideas for my games?

Anything is worth reading for that. But yes.
>>
It's worth reading even if you've never played games at all.
But keep two things in mind:
1) It's fairly long, though the language is beautiful;
2) If you're looking for action and epic battles, forget it. It mostly describes fairly mundane village affairs like looking for a wife or building a cart, though the characters involved are gods and heroes.

Also it's got the most epic Bard in the history of literature.

You also need some creatures and stuff so you can mana durdle long enough to fire off the door.

How do I make encounters with massive creatures fun?
I'm playing 5e and my players have built up some lore (they like to improvise) regarding a massive monster, so I intend to make it plot relevant in the next session.
However, I am conflicted about how to make the encounter, as "hit the big monster until it's dead" is pretty boring. How do I make the encounter fun for my party without being a slogfest?

Since the creature is a laboratory experiment, I was thinking about it being controlled by a number of mages & rune totems. It will attack with large, damaging area of affect abilities, which are dodgable, but just enough to instill some danger to the players. If enough of the mages are distracted/rune totems are destroyed, the beast will go berserk against its captors, ending the encounter as it breaks free and heads into the sea as the BBEG curses them and teleports away.
Does this sound exciting, at least? Combat that drags on and doesn't require any form of creativity bores my players

>>
Either that or take a cue from video games and have some weakpoints on it you need to target. Hell, make the monster the arena, have the players attacking like "pimples of power" or something on it's back while they're getting attacked by tentacles, parasites and have to make saves to avoid getting shaken off.
>>
>>51676241
The encounter you described sounds fun. Another idea would be to get inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus. Have the PC's need to mount and attack certain weak sections of the beast to take it off it's feet before trying to deal a death blow.
>>
>goes into the sea and escapes
>presumably to do whatever giant sea monsters do

Make it a twist that it remembers your group as the ones who set it free and it comes out to one shot a potentially game ending enemy and eating it.

So tell me about your witches.

What do you like to do with them in your settings?

Are they more in line with more standard depictions, or do you love to play with the witch archetype in unusual ways?

How do you justify witches that are pretty unusual (like having green skin and giant hats that somehow never fall off their heads)?

In the last case I justify it that the skin is a result of a mix of druidic magic induced plant symbiosis, meaning they are part plant, whereas the hat stays still because its semi-sentient and has suction cups like squids and octopuses have. The more eccentric and powerful the witch, the bigger the hat.

Witches in my settings more closely resemble the wizards from destiny, with a splash of wraith from evolve (because something good had to come from these piles) outside those recurring elements they are very different from one another, some having large humanoid bodies they just out of, others more limbs or different faces, they are ment to tick off the boxes for nightmare faps a human or any race can become one of these monsters by dabbling enough into dark magics, but they can also be born. The un/lucky mate may be taken as an apprentice, turned into a familiar or simply consumed in any manner the witch or your imagination favors

Dramatis personae:

Angus - An orc from Dundee. Originally a greengrocer but also horrendously proficient with the flamethrower he carries. The flamethrower doubles as a thermic lance.
The bard - A human, wears a kilt, plays the bagpipes. Occasionally has great ideas. The DM uses his own taste in music for what the bard actually plays (so usually classic rock or country & western).
Cruella - Essentially a Dark Eldar wych wearing more clothes. She is vicious and stealthy. Armed with two daggers and a sword that she talks to. Played by Aldous' PC's then (and now again) GF. The latter fact occasionally becomes relevant which is why it is mention it.
The wizard - Not actually magic but can command metal (iron) and summon various sharp or pointy things. Including chainsaws.
The Navvie (also called Burt) - A very large human with a hammer. He hits things with it.

Aldous with Purple Penguin
Aldous - The character of the one telling the story. A dwarven knight. Wears full plate. Carries twin revolvers and a gatling shotgun. Smokes a pipe.
The purple penguin - Moral compass and possible DM PC.

There's also the DM and all you really need to know is he's a cunt.

>Britbongsteros and the Chamber of Maximum Fuck
So this story is from not long after I got back from the US. The DM enjoying the idea of linking things up to Real Life (TM) it has a slightly more American flavour.

The party begins the story in Grimsby.
"DM, why are we in Grimsby?"
"Why is anyone ever in Grimsby, Cruella?"
"... that is oddly profound."
We have been sent here as usual by the Privy Council. The recent Cod Wars (wiki it) have resulted in an immense quantity of giant mutant cod generally causing havoc on local shipping fleets; the Icelandic Stupidly Attractive Elves have pulled a fast one and the reparations they were to pay have resulted in large quantities of wrecked boats and something weird going on.
The party sighs audibly.
Party: "DM, this is what happens every time: we turn up in some small fishing village, shit gets weird, everybody dies, organs and bits are everywhere and then we all go home for tea and medals."
>The DM looks enormously displeased.
The DM reshuffles his notes. Sighs, drinks, sighs again, drinks some more. I will translate from DM as we go.
"Clearly that is not why you, as the most excellent of the Countries' problem solvers are here."
>Ok you fuckwits, you asked for it.
"The actual adventure that I carefully planned"
>I am pulling this out of my ass right now
>>
>>51675526
"meticulously, and no there's no railroading, but if you had some patience, you'd all actually get the hook in a second."
>Will you stop ruining my carefully laid out plot, I'm about thirty seconds from rocks fall and everybody dies.
The mutant cod have, it seems, after a sterling action by the SBS (Special Bastard Squadron), been defeated already (oh thank god), however it seems that their roe (fish eggs) have some very odd properties. The above (and below) are explained to us by the spectacularly moustachioed Colonel K of the SBS.
"Bloody downright weird, in fact, that's why we called you chaps. You're the experts and we were told the most expendable. We lost half a dozen men getting this stuff sealed up." Colonel K gestures at a lead lined box. "We want you to take this stuff to the Research Facility on HMS Habbacuck, it's totally classified, but it's somewhere in the Penines."

>>
>>51674899
Glad to be of service. Nethack is a neat little solitaire DnD vidya. Prayer timeout here refers to the time until it's "safe" to pray for help (and not anger your deity for being a bother too often).

I've understood the source code enough to be able to mimic it with dice and coins, but the result is in nethack turns. I suppose I could just handwave it as 10 seconds like AD&D did.
>>
>>51675010
Very interesting.

To me, a prayer timeout sounds like a really terrifying theological event for a fantasy priest.

So I managed to roll up "bubble" as my magical trait in a campaign I'll be starting soon, and I'm desperately in need of ideas for how I can harness the power of bubbles for magical spells.

Any ideas /hg/?

Let's talk encumbrance systems in RPGs.

What is your favourite system? What do you like best about it? What games do it right?

What is your least favourite encumbrance system? What makes you despise it? How could it be done better?

>What is your favourite system? What do you like best about it? What games do it right?
My favorite is the one ACKs uses, and more broadly the OSR encumbrance systems like it.

I like that it doesn't require exact weights for every single item. Instead, sorting items into categories (small/one-handed, large/two-handed, armor, coins/gems, etc) is enough to decide the extent to which characters are encumbered.

I also like that it blends weight with portability and ease of storage. That means you're much less likely to run into a situation where you're under the limit, but your GM is giving you dirty looks for how many 10ft poles you have on your person.

I like that it has a scaling degree of encumbrance that is easily computed and has real impacts to combat speed, overworld speed, and other things.
>>
>>51673738

Its interesting just how much stuff you can pack on yourself if you put your mind into it.

To give an IRL LARP example - I was armed with infantry half plate, bow in holster+quiver, medium sized shield, 2 swords, shameful amount of knives AND I had room for more since nothing was strapped on my back and my arms were free due to decent rigging. I could easily include a backpack with a bedroll and outdoors kit AND still have my arms free to hold something - like a great weapon.

Problem: GW books are worthless and overcosted.

Problem: To be able to play the game you need to know what other armies can do or you will end getting crushed by some retarded cheese combo.

Problem: I don't play any Eldar and there is zero reason for me to buy the book as it's too expensive for giving me pretty much zero benefit other than know what the new Eldar stuff can do.

Problem: I'm not poor but I'm not rich either, I have a hobby budget of about €40 per month, I can buy a book I will flip through once or buy a model kit, paints or something else I will actually use.

Problem: I'm a self entitled asshole who believes all rules should be free and fuck GW because GW are fucking assholes who can't balance for shit and cite "Narrative Gameplay" as an excuse to write shitty rules.

Hello /tg/, I'm brand new to this board so please forgive me if I lack etiquette that is common here.

I have gotten into the wonderful game known as D&D, and recently I have taken up DMing. I take great joy in creating dungeons and writing stories even before I knew about D&D, and when I discovered it I immediately knew that this is my cup of tea. Now as a new DM, I have realized that this game is infinitely more versatile than any other I've ever encountered before, and a railroad plot would rarely work. My problem is, one of my player is out to get me, to render my campaign a joke and to sail through everything with ease. Although I am very positive that I would be able to outsmart him every time he attempts to throw me a curve ball, I thought getting advice from experts would be enlightening. A few guidelines I will stand by:
1. I will not kill him off, that's equivalent to surrendering.
2. The fun of the players are my priority, including this idiot who's trying to fuck with me.
3. To ensure that the game remains challenging, rewarding, and fun.

Any advice would be highly appreciated, thank you.

Hi /tg/, I'm looking to start playing 40k with some friends. Can you help me pick a marines chapter? I've tried a few games with ultramarines and the gameplay is ok but I don't really like the blue or the Latin. I'd like something with a bit more resemblance to real world marines, except in space. Don't think I'm a jerk off, i did a short time a while back and it wasn't hollywood, I still think it's a bad idea to wear bright colors and do these elaborate rituals and talk semi-olde english and role play as space knights if you're going to fight a war.

So basically I'm asking, is there a chapter out there that wears camo without elaborate bing, and does things like scout the battlefield from orbit, send in airstrikes, drop tanks and then men and clear the area? And they're invincible mostly because they're good at what they do, not because they yell emperor? Probably not, but what's the closest thing to that?

I don't really care if chaos or vanilla since I'm not really into the lore. But I would like for them to be semi competitive.
