About to run pic related. Do you guys typically give your players a basic ship from the start or have the first adventure revolve around acquiring a ship?

'Sup /tg/, I used to play a lot of 40k and LOTR Strategy Battle, and I've always wanted to try a pen-n-paper RPG.

My first few games will be with just one other person, and I've been looking at D&D but it seems a little too rule-heavy for a small game. Otherwise I've been interested in Call of Cthulhu or whatever this GURPS thing is. Setting doesn't matter as much as pace and simplicity.

Any recommendations for something short and sweet? Any tips for new DMs, specifically running a duet?

I'm thinking of GMing a game based in the 20th millennium during the Dark Age of Technology.

What would the main factions of the galaxy be like during this time?

The imperium were a federation and the eldar had an empire on par or even larger than mankind, and both were hyper-advanced, I know that much.
Tau obviously hadn't evolved past the stone age, and Necrons were still asleep

Question /tg/, what system could I go for if I wanted to run a modern-ish fantasy game with magic, mechs and huge swords? I'm basically trying to emulate something akin to Final Fantasy 7 but I wouldn't know where to start with it system wise.
