Important aspects of a potion:
When is it effective:
For instance, a health potion is generally considered to become effective when ingested by a living person. In all other cases, it is effectively inert. However, if this was altered such that it would take effect as soon as it entered the body via any means, including skin contact, you could create some very strange effects. Slather your sword in healing potion and suddenly you can practice fighting with real weapons because any attack you do would immediately heal.
How quickly does it run its course:
A measure of how long it takes for the potion to fully take effect or for its effects to play out. A healing potion that works over the course of a few hours isn't as good as one that heals instantly; unless instant healing has downsides that the slower potion doesn't have. There are, in essence, three methods or types of this: Latency, duration, and extended effect. Latency is how long it takes for the effects of the potion to manifest, duration is how long the effects themselves last, and extended effect is if it takes a while for the effect to ramp up, or if the effect is completed over time. How long it takes to start, to end, and if the effect is 100% through entire duration or if it builds to 100% over the course of the duration.

Targeting:
Does the potion target some specific part of the thing it is used on? For instance, a potion which grants nightsight would have to target the eyes. Granting nightsight to your digestive organs, or your whole body, would be of questionable worth. For instance, without a target you might gain the nightsight at the cost of becoming photosensitive; taking damage from any bright light. Similarly, an oil which creates fire is great if you can pour it on a sword and it affects only the blade, not the parts you hold. Possible use of the magical law of similarity, where like produces like. Mixing eye like fruits into the potion could result in it targeting eyes with its effect. Possible.
Effect:
The most important part of the potion is what it does; though it is also a very complex aspect. The examples I used were a Healing potion and a vial of alchemist's fire. The question is, what happens when I pull the active ingredients out of each of them and switch them? Healing grenade and a drink that catches fire when ingested. What if Combine them? Healing fire? How many effects can be stacked into one potion and how do they act when combined?

Potency:
Simply put, what happens when I stick more of the same ingredient into a potion? Does it take effect faster? Does the effect double? Last twice as long? And can someone overdose on the ingredients or the potion? If I drink a bunch of healing potions and overdose, will I get some sort of autoimmune disease or cancerous growth as my flesh repairs beyond normal?
Container:
Part of the creation process of some potions would inevitably require special containers or equipment. Alchemical fire, as described, reacts with air, meaning the container it's in must contain either a vacuum or some manner of inert gas. Powerful corrosives couldn't be held in normal materials, and some things might be light sensitive. All these things would have to be kept in mind.

When is it effective:
The major thing here is the decision of how to delineate this. See, the problem is that you could have hundreds of these individual conditions about when a potion activates. On skin, on metal, in air, when ingested, when shaken, when mixed in water, when injected, when exposed to light etc etc.
There are a few methods to avoid this while still allowing control. Modularity of effective state is probably best, though that entails a great deal of parts OR a use of the Magical Law of similarity. Alternatively, effective ingredients, that is to say the ingredients that have the effects built into them, could also determine when the potion is effective. For instance the ingredient that allows healing may only take effect in the body and not outside of it.
But this in turn leads to possible conflicts between effective locations and requires extra work on the ingredients.
The last possibility is a few hard effective locations which are modified by the targeting to get the desired specificity.

Do you allow your player to create characters with higher intelligence than they have themselves ?
I personally house-rule against this as properly roleplaying a smarter character is impossible and so an average IQ player trying to play a high int character just brings down the overall roleplaying quality of the game. Sometimes people get upset that their community college ass doesn't get to play a wizard, but players are pretty easy to come by so I don't really mind.

Hey /tg/, I recent finished DMing a D&D campaign that lasted for about two and a half years. I thought I'd share the story to, I guess, repay /tg/ for all of the stories that inspired me to play.
I want to begin by saying that I never meant for Etzi to be anything more than a travel guide for the players. How he ended up as the main character is still beyond me. I hate the idea of DMPCs as well as putting the spotlight on NPC’s for any amount of time. It’s not suppose to be their story. It’s the story of the PC’s. This story, however, is a story about Etzi. Or rather, how every one of my players went out of their way to make this little NPC the hero.
I began this group my first semester at college (I had just transferred from two years at community college, and I had about three years ahead of me). I was DMing two games on Roll20, but after one ended because of lack of availability, I suggested to my roommate that he and I play D&D together. My roommate had played a little before, so I told him to invite some of his friends who hadn’t.
A brief word about my campaign setting: I had too much time on my hands in community college, and so made quite a massive world with nearly 20 races and six continents (I’ve trimmed it down since then). I also had some particular rules, namely, that spells like raise dead and resurrection were not allowed. I did allow Revivify, but that was grudgingly. I let the players choose any race they wanted, but the adventure began on the jungle continent of Xill.

So to begin we had four players and four characters:
My roommate, who played Jim, the lizardfolk-who-thought-he-was-a-human bard, Chaotic Stupid/Good
Friend #1, who played Saint Archibald, the blandest paladin I’ve ever met, Lawful Boring
Friend #1’s fiancé, who played Tepin, an eleven-year-old drow druidess (drow in my world are jungle folk), Neutral Kawaii
And a man whom I shall call Jay, who played Beethoven, the one-legged veteran gay minotaur gunslinger suffering from PTSD, Chaotic Random (of course). As you can already guess, Jay was… a handful. And yes, all of those adjectives were essential to his character.
They started off in the tiny town of Itchtali and were recruited by a funny-smelling representative of the Blacksmith’s Union to go clear out an old “spellforge” that the Blacksmith’s Union wanted. It was an average introductory adventure: travel to a dungeon, kill the beasts inside, come back and get gold. Since this was the first time that the others had played D&D, I wanted to introduce them to role-playing slowly. So I had the party guided to the forge by a local drow boy by the name of Ezapali. Immediately, the party shortened it to Etzi and declared that Etzi was the team’s mascot. Fairly normal, so far.
By the end of the first session, after some combat and much laughter, they had all begun to learn all about Etzi’s backstory as I taught them how to roleplay. They learned that Etzi’s father had been killed by an ogre that lived in the deep jungle. The party vowed to find and kill the ogre, after they cleared out the spellforge. If they hadn’t taken an interest, I doubt any of the campaign would have happened, but they did. And it was a wild ride from there.

The next session, two more players joined our group, Kewil, a racist drow ranger tracking down some dragonborn men for no other reason than she hated dragonborn (typical ranger, really). And we had Akiiki, the anubite (think catfolk/Kajit) rogue.
A note about Akiiki. Near the beginning of the campaign, her player sent me a six page overview of Akiiki, which was quite a lot more than any of the other player did. Akiiki’s backstory was about as grimdark as they come and included rape, murder, senseless violence, and a very detailed scene in which Akiiki was forced to kill her own newborn. Her alignment?
NE.
Great.
Anyways, the party rescued Akiiki and Kewil from a bunch of Thri-Kreen that were randomly out in the jungle, and Akiiki and Kewil agreed to travel with the party to the spellforge and back to Itchali. As they progressed further, they discovered that the Thri-Kreen were not native to the jungle, but invaders from another plane. The party was super interested in this, and were also super interested in Etzi. So, because they were so interested, gave Etzi a strange dream to have something to talk about. I mentioned that he saw a tree on fire in his dream--a malevolent tree. Some religion checks later, the party discovered it was likely Tethgalos, an old evil god some evil elves worshiped way back when. Didn't seem too important to them, so they ventured on.

Neat. That character looks almost exactly like what my current character is supposed to look like - she's a Tiefling Bard with a focus on Perform (Dance).
