Has anyone here actually played more sci-fi RPGs than fantasy? And yes I know there's a lot of overlap between the two like WH40k, Star Wars, Dragonstar, Numenera, etc. so just humor me and assume when I mean fantasy in this case I mean the more medievalist stuff.

Basically, has anyone played more Traveller-esque settings than D&D-esque settings?

I've played in exactly two fantasy games, and ran exactly one. All of them fell apart after a couple sessions. Once because I was new and it was bad, once for scheduling conflicts, and one because we decided we didn't like dnd.

And I don't mean that in a "DAE DnD is bad!" way, or even "fantasy = dnd". I just don't like dnd or fantasy much personally. I really want to run Warhammer fantasy some day, I really like the WHFRP retro-clone Zweihänder and would probably use that. And I'm always on the lookout for people to try and get a Dark Sun game going.

I digressed a bit there, but I have played for more Science Fiction/Fantasy games. I've played a lot of 40k games and Star Wars games (I have played WEG, D20, and EotE), one homebrew that was so generic I don't even remember it, we did character creation for Traveler once, some Gamma World if you'd count that, and my friends and I are looking to play Coriolis soon because "Arabian Nights in Space" is one of the best fucking things I've ever heard.

I hate D&D with a passion which really limits my options for Fantasy RPGs. The fantasy RPGs I have DMed (forever GM here) are things like Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay or the Dragon Age RPG. I'm just much more comfortable with sci-fi settings even if they have some magical elements.

Probably the longest-running games I have GMed are Dark Heresy, Shadowrun and a little post-apocalypse setting called Darwin's World.

One thing that kind of irritates me is the lack of "Pure" Sci-Fi settings in big budget RPGs. It seems like everything from Shadowrun to Deadlands feels compelled to include magic. I'm a big fan of Cyberpunk 2020, so I do hope that we get a re-booted version of the setting once the Cyberpunk 2077 game launches.

Dark Sun fan, eh?

I think Dark Sun and Eberron might be the only to fantasy settings left that I'd be able to genuinely enjoy at this point. But then I just need more exposure to fantasy settings that aren't more generic Tolkein-esque rehashes. BUT at the same time aren't super alienating and trying way to hard to be original. Hence why I think Dark Sun/Eberron strike gold.

I don't think there's a lot of settings that are 100% "pure" from supernatural or paranormal stuff. Even allegedly "hard" sci-fi settings like Eclipse Phase and Fragged Empire have either psionics or alien tech that tends to invoke Clarke's Third Law. Which I'm okay with honestly, as long as it's rare and (usually) unnerving to use or be around.

I'm sorry. it was too funny.

> experienced badass mentors local fuckup because they see their hidden potential

I didn't like this trope before, but it derailed a game I was in last year in the best way.

The game was SUPPOSED to be MTG-inspired mutiversal adventures. One of my players made Rokard, The Hero of Five Worlds an experienced traveler of the planes with an annoying habit of getting involved in local affairs.

The other derailed my whole game by making Ivy, a girl in a harry potter esq magic school whose planeswalking ability had yet to ignite. Honestly, the school was SUPPOSED to be something we left behind in the first session to go do multiverse things.

What happened instead was Ivy got fed up with being shit at magic and tried to summon a familiar to bind and boost her power. The spell fails because she is a fuckup, and Rokard (who is just passing by, multiversally speaking) detects her power and mistakes her for a planeswalker. So he drops in to see what all the fuss is about on his own, this knightly dude who can call down fire and lightning, and she is convinced that she just summoned the best familiar ever.

The teachers show up, a fight doesn't happen, and Rokard goes and has a talk with the teachers, because he is like 90% sure right now she is a planeswalker who hasn't ignited yet. He finds out that they don't think very highly of Ivy, and in fact they believe that she has basically no magical potential at all. They literally are just taking her parents money and feeding Ivy's dreams of becoming a sorceress with no expectation that she will ever be able to graduate.

Rokard fumes and flips his shit, points his finger at them, and says that they are all fucking assholes and that he is going to show them by training Ivy to be the best damn sorceress they have ever seen with forms of magic they have never even heard of.

A dragon just under a hundred years old is able to transform into a human shape. However, it's only able to transform into a preteen human, due to its age.

How can I introduce this as a PC the players need to interact with several times, and minimize the pedobait? I don't actually need to minimize the overall creep factor, since this dragon-child is going to have really gross cataracts that don't impede its vision at all, walk barefoot over ice and snow without harm, and have/do other creepy shit

Have them transform into an adult because they are a goddamn dragon and can look like whatever they want.

You mean NPC?
DMPC?
Or are you a player and you need to get your GM to accept your preteen human dragon?

Please clarify.

You could try by not using a pedobait idea in the first place.

Yes, but I can only do that so many times before it becomes absurd. They already have cumulatively acquired what could be described as a small army of bounty hunters/law enforcers after them.

I either need to subvert the idea somehow, or expand on it; they're obviously gaining a reputation. Just not sure how.

Give me RPG system that has those:

- out of the box expierience, no tweaking
- massive bestiary, preferable weaponry and itemry also(as in not kickstarter/singleton book crap with 30 monsters)
- no rigid classes, anyone can pick locks, stealth, maybe magic
21 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I don't think there is an RPG that matches all of your criteria to the letter. The "massive bestiary" is the biggest stumbling block, as D&D and OSR derivatives are essentially the only systems I can think of which regularly churns out dozens of bestiary entries, and those are obviously class-based.

Next closest thing, maybe BRP or D6, but those need tweaking.
>>
>>51851762
Anything FFG pumps out has enough stat blocks to rival dnd.

They make "core" lines for a setting, then release splat books for those line but make them teniously connected so they might be able to use together. Kinda like the mess that was oWoD and the clan, tradition and tribe books.
>>
>>51851762
Classes are ok, but i don't like the fact that warrior for example can't sneak past something or pick locks. Like in baldurs gate. How is OSR with that? Or maybe some DnD edition that is less rigid with class roles.

Hunting a BBEG that was worshiped by a cult in your last campaign, but now the cult is gone and the BB is either too obscure for common people to know about or he's just a dickass everyone hates

You are a hermit crab. You have other hermit crab friends. You need to find food and shellter every so often. You have to kill other animals or find rubbish under the sea to survive.
What do?
>>
>>51849482
There are plenty of other tropes to go with besides cults. Off the top of my head:
Dragons
Invading Warriors
The Evil Tyrant
Strange Magical Phenomena
The Fey
Pirates
A Hidden World
The Legendary Treasure
Revenge
The Apocalypse
Murder Mysteries
Racist Overtones
Settling The Wild Frontier
Witch Hunters
Organized Religion that's totally not a cult

Or, you know, you could try sci-fi instead of fantasy.

No you idiot, you need to get rid of it, that stuff's toxic.

I've been playing over the Internet for a while and notice that in the past couple of years the trends of how these games have been played have changed pretty drastically. Though I've gotten to play through voice chats now, I still don't quite understand the whole thing about why it's suddenly so popular.

Benefits I've seen in playing through text:
>No need to buy an additional piece of equipment
>No keeping it on your head for hours at once to hurt your ears like a bitch
>No sitting in the chair without even being able to stand up and stretch lest the wires fuck you up
>Can take a bit of time thinking what you'll write next
>Can roleplay properly with an occasional epic speech and won't have to tell the others to shut up or not interrupt while you do so
>When you DM, can describe places and events better and easier and more evocatively
>Can play to the petty hours without bothering other residents in your house, or neighbors, or dog
>Easier to get immersed into it when you can imagine all characters to have actually fitting voices
>Easier to play fitting music over it without being afraid of drowning the speech under it
>Can play all sorts of weird nonhuman races or characters of opposite sex without it sounding all weird
>Can play a dwarf and write the accent down right
>Can speak in strange tongues without needing to imitate Elvish with your clumsy-ass mouth
>The increased distance makes it easier to bring in more awkward themes without weirding everyone out
>Won't need to deal with accents, lisps, poor English, or other incomprehensions
>Won't need to ask anyone to repeat what was said, because you had to go to bathroom or simply forgot some detail: just scroll up
>Games are easier to record, reading them afterwards is faster and simpler than listening to them
>Maybe you're just really shy

Benefits I've seen in playing through voice:
>Games go a bit faster
>Can make funny noises to bring some life on the NPCs

I guess voice chats in RPGs are kind of like CGI animation to me: I can understand there's some benefit to it, I can see why some people would prefer it, but I really honestly can't begin to comprehend how the hell it became the absolute standard, how no one at all does the method I feel objectively superior any longer, and how I tend to get a whole lot of hate for even broaching the subject. Potential players back away from my games when I tell them I run through text. I can't join games myself unless I bring out my mic and speak with them, sacrificing some essential parts of the gaming for me in doing so, not to mention going through other various inconveniences and hurting my body. And we will probably never see another goddamn masterpiece like the Prince of Egypt because Hollywood is a bunch of assholes.

But I digress.

Can someone add some more items to the voice chat part to explain this shit to me?
>>
It's the difference between playing around a table and play by post.
I like being able to feed off the other players, able to react to them better, my character is able to interject where they may etc.

Different strokes for different folks, but I'm sure you can find a forum based RP still if you really want.
>>
>>51848884
>Games go a bit faster
They really don't. As you said, things slow down to a halt when someone shifts their attention away for a bit and has to be personally caught up to speed.
