how do I get my dm to kill my character without implying I wanted to die?

Make stupid irrational tactical decisions, and put yourself in a situation in which he'd need some hard fiat to get you out.

Alternatively, you could be an adult, and talk to him about retiring the character. Not all adventurers die horribly.

I am trying to imagine a game system that wouldn't have any dump stats. Each stat would be marginally useful for each kind of class.

>Constitution

HP/Defense. It's already tends to be important for all classes in games.

>Intelligence

Affects how many skills you can learn

>Focus

Critical hits for weapons, casting time for magic, and accuracy for both

>Agility

Dodge rate, attacking speed

>Spirit

Magic defense

And last but not least

>Strength

In addition to affecting your carrying capacity, it also affects what kind of armor you can wear. Any class can wear any armor given they have enough strength. This took me the longest to think of.

Obviously there's no way to prevent min-maxing but it would be nice for a system where each stat is marginally useful/

What are your guy's thoughts? Do any other games try to do something like this?

I feel like Pillars of Eternity handled the system pretty well, but I can't think of any others

http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Attribute
>>
>>51958598

You would have to have very generic Attributes that can be used by characters of different archetypes (i.e. warriors, rangers, thieves, mages, sorcerers, healers, etc.).

>Health (Points)
>Special (Points)
>Damage
>Defense
>Luck (Crit/Evade Bonus Chance)
>>
>>51958789
I think some games use that but it is too generic for me. I just want something a little better than D&D where 6 strength and 15 strength have no difference for a Wizard character. But no system is going to be perfect.

I usually play a homebrew system sort of like 3.5e. I tend to like letting my players attempt to do more or less whatever they want regardless of their class and just penalize them if they arent trained. However, without giving fighters, rangers and rouges spells (abilities, skills or whatever you want to call them) i dont know how to make them interesting compared to wizards and sorcerers.

Even if i do give fighters and the like spells i still feel like theyre uninteresting. "I hit the enemy with my super hit i can only do occasionally" isnt really as exciting as "I polymorph the enemy" or "I freeze them in ice". Similarly, for rangers i feel like "I shoot 3 arrows" is much more dull than "I turn the ground underneath my opponents into quicksand".

I try to make sure combat isnt the focus of my campaigns and encourage the players to find interesting ways to prepare for or circumvent combat but sometimes they just go in to slog it out and i feel like its tremendously boring. Certainly, the setting may be interesting or the opponents unique but it'd be nice if the gameplay reflected this.

Oh, im something of a novice as well.

If you like "The d20 System, but not" sorta systems, look into Open Legend or Fantasy Craft. Both have all sorts of special augmentations and effects that get baked into normal attacks.

In Fantasy Craft's feat system you specialize in weapon categories, and feats grant special stances and attack tricks on top of static bonuses. On top of that, the differences between weapon types is less stratified so with a simple staff or dagger you can still be quite a threat.

In Open Legend RPG, which is free/'open source', there is a system of Banes and Boons that encapsulates positive and negative effects you can impart, whether through banal or extraordinary means.

There are a lot of compelling options there that wouldn't be hard to do for a dedicated fighter sort of character.
Additionally, any time your attack beats their defense by 10 or more you can apply a Bane that uses the attacking attribute (and of a power level up to the attackers rating in it) for free. Each weapon has banes their more effective with, lowering the stat prerequisite, and with a feat you could lower that to 5.

Open Legend is a bit different from the 'normal' d20 System formula, though. Stats add dice to rolls rather than flat numbers, all dice can explode, and the damage actually dealt is the difference between the roll and target.

It also has an Apocalypse World sort of way of handling failed rolls where something interesting is always meant to happen, with this as a more structured option: if you miss an attack you can inflict 3 damage, a bane, or force them to move 10 feet. But, what you're attacking can do the same to you.
>>
What you're asking for isn't really possible. The problem is rooted in how bad the default actions in 3.PF are.

Basically everything that isn't directly attacking someone isn't worth doing, because it's unlikely to work and more likely to just get you hurt instead. You have to invest a lot of feats in it to make it even halfway good and even then it's generally not worth it.

But without a resource mechanic, classes can only operate on the same level as those default actions.

Casting classes get more powerful effects because those actions are limited, as opposed to the default actions you can take. The Tome of Battle/Path of War stuff gives martial classes a resource mechanic (with a handy built in justification if you care about that) that allows them to take actions beyond the defaults and makes playing them actually fun.

But to fix it without giving martial classes a resource mechanic you'd need to massively increase the effectiveness of the default actions. Giving every martial character every feat related to trip/sunder/bull rush etc by default would be a patch, but you'd not get a real solution without completely reworking the fundamental combat system, and at that point you're making an entirely new game.

A player pointed out that she wasn't getting nearly enough Compels in the Fate game I'm playing. And honestly, NOBODY is. I manage to give out like, one or two a session, which makes the players less willing to spend what few points they get from Refresh.

Any advice on remembering to give out compels? There is admittedly a small problem where the players have a few too many vague, navel-gazing personality trait aspects that are hard to compel. But I think maybe I'm building encounters too D&Dy and less Fate-y to begin with...

One idea I've had is basically giving up on 'spur of the moment' compels because clearly I'm shit at them, and then designing scenes with 'okay, at the royal ball I'm going to to try compelling this. If it's accepted, X, if not, Y.' So rather than 'there is a group of bandits in this room' I'd design the scene like 'if this aspect is compelled, X recurring villain shows up to support bandits, if not, empty room and move along to something more exciting'

Another thing I'm having trouble with is making compels exciting 'Oh Shit' moments... but not making them 'haha you are out of fate points, all aboard the railroad'

Thoughts? I'm kinda just brainstorming out loud but I feel like compels are the weakest part of my Fate GMing and they're supposed to be a big part

When plotting a new arc or session try to take into account the PCs trouble AND other aspects that could complicate things. I remember reading one piece of advice for Fate was to take an aspect from each character and make an adventure that includes them all.
PCs can self compel, if they act in accordance with their aspects, especially if they make the story more complicated to resolve, you can retroactively reward them, without formalizing the compel.
If the PCs have to be smooth and suave at a soiree, but you want to give them a compel, but none of their troubles seem appropriate examine their aspects for implicit or explicit complications. Say the guy with the Last Good Cop aspect is compelled to go help out a waitress being hassled by a lech, or he see's a criminal in attendance and he can't resist giving the guy the evil eye and casting aspersions on his good name in front of his socialite buddies or any of a number of things.
Pick an aspect that might prevent things going smoothly, make the option fun or entertaining and demonstrative of who that character is, and build upon them in the future so you have ready made plot-hooks or compels waiting in the wings.
>>
>>51958397
thanks anon

It's too bad, but self-compels aren't a thing this campaign. One of my players feels like self-compels are cheesey and since the other players are new they aren't really good with the system and follow that players lead on that regard.
>>
>>51957863
Have a list of the PC's aspects in front of you at all times, but especially when setting up your scene, choose one appropriate aspect from each player to focus on, and see if you can hit it during the scene with a compel, tick the ones that you use and cross the ones that you successfully compelled.
In some scenes you're only going to want to try to compel one or two players, you don't want to overcomplicate your story, but I probably wouldn't suggest only compelling the character with the least Fate points because you might create a self-fuelling spot-light stealing machine if they're spending and regaining their Fate faster than anyone else.
