Is it just me, or does anyone else get bothered by the number of ridiculous, outlandish character build gimmicks in modern TTRPGs? It feels like half the players out there are infatuated with exploiting the rules into dual-shielding, wielding furniture, or spamming trip maneuvers over and over. Or, casters that wrap their entire character around one particular spell, trying to squeeze everything possible out of it and never bothering with anything else. How is this actually fun? Is it just too difficult to have a character that does normal, makes-sense-in-the-world decisions and has the capacity to use more than one single tactic? What happened to verisimilitude and the flexibility that real adventurers would need?

For fuck's sake, I just want to be able to play a normal, believable character in a normal, believable party, and not have to deal with always having at least one guy who wants to be a barbarian who will only wield a broken wine bottle as his weapon yet insists that it needs to work the same as a zweihander because game balance.

How do you make a hivemind that feels legitimately terrifying, but also interesting in a way that's not just 'we all think the same thing?'

Pic related, best example I can think of.

>>
It's a democracy. Every mind in the hive mind may speak it's opinion and all minds can deliberate. The best idea is ALWAYS chosen. Minds that don't have a strong opinion can deliberate.

It's terrifying not because it forces you to do anything but because it shows you that you are wrong. You no longer have an ego, you are no longer allowed to be comfortably ignorant.
>>
Make a Hive Mind a stalker. The thing is in love with one of your characters, and it will stop at nothing until it assimilates him. And because it's a Hive Mind, it can have a reach of an entire universe, so nowhere is safe.

>Are there any great (npc??) heroes in your world?
Yep, like that great explorer, the first king of notgreece, and the guy who got his country destroyed by Ogres after he tried to kill all the samurai.
>Do you use standard races or creatures? (Elves, Dwarves, Elk, Dragons, etc.)
Yes.
>What are the most fearsome creatures of your setting? Is it unique or are their hordes?
Dragons. Usually they're unique, but in one part of the world there's an entire primitive civilization.
>Do your people keep pets? Are they any different to normal?
Yep.

Hard Mode:
>What's stopping the monsters from taking over humanity (or its equivalent)?
Guns and wizards.
>Draw your monster. Doesn't matter if you're any good.
When I get back from work.
>>
>Are there any great (npc??) heroes in your world?
Yes. For example, there's the mythical warrior Kinson, son of Sor, who took on almost all of the men of a neighboring clan and defeated all of them single-handedly at the age of fourteen.
>Do you use standard races or creatures? (Elves, Dwarves, Elk, Dragons, etc.)
I have elves, dragons, short folk, and multiple other creatures from folklore and mythology, as well as some that I made up myself.
>What are the most fearsome creatures of your setting? Is it unique or are their hordes?
I cannot say for sure what the most fearsome creature in the world is. Dragons, maybe.
>Do your people keep pets? Are they any different to normal?
They keep pets, but nothing out of the ordinary. Though, some aristocrats do keep some weird pets, like foxes, hedgehogs, or weasels.

Hard Mode:
>What's stopping the monsters from taking over humanity (or its equivalent)?
They're not that strong or powerful. A dragon is basically as strong as a couple of elephants, and as smart as a wizard, nothing a few trained soldiers cannot handle.
>Draw your monster. Doesn't matter if you're any good.
No can do.

I'm working on a space opera setting, but for whatever reason I'm stuck on one particular detail that I'm not able to move past even though there's plenty more work to do.

Specifically, there's a sect of law-enforcers who are sponsored by one of the major political factions in the galaxy who act as judge/jury/executioners in the galactic outback, primarily when it comes to dealing with piracy. They follow a samurai-like code of conduct and morality, but at the same time they are also space cops who can be brought, bribed and corrupted. I'm hoping to generate some decent shades of gray here.

Problem is I haven't settled on what to actually call them. So far I've got three possible names that I'm juggling:

1. Heironauts- invoking the idea of "Astronaut" in that they are space explorers, but the Heiro- prefix implies that they view their work as somehow santified. Works, but maybe a bit abstract.

2. Vollstreckers. This is a german word meaning "Enforcers". Pretty straight-forward, but I'm worried that it's overly edgy

3. Peacekeepers. Obvious and easily read but also possibly overdone.

I feel like once I get this sorted out I'll be able to move forward in other areas. This is just stuck in my brain like a popped-corn kernal in my teeth.

Hey /tg/. Looking for some character art. Blond knight, cheerful and colorful is the basic idea of what I want. Western, quarter plate, and sword and board are optional, but if you could manage it I'd be grateful.

If anyone's interested, I'll talk about the idea behind the character, if I get some good art.

Pic unrelated.

Jumpers!
How many of you do research for your chains?
As in let's say you pick up a perk for survival skills: do you actually look up survival skills that would be related to your starting location?
If you've picked up a mundane crafting skill do you research how the items were actually made?

Do you just skim wikipedia and youtube or other sources?

I do. I do to the point that I completely changed my plot after research in how flares were made.

Question: What are some homebrew rules or gimmicks you or your DM have implemented to make 5e combat not boring?

>Previous thread >>52039197
404 posts and 34 images submitted.
>>
>>52047021
Closest we've come to a non-standard combat encounter was one where there were two bosses and killing either would result in the space we were fighting in exploding a couple turns later (which we didn't know but figured out pretty quickly). Kinda wish he'd be a bit more creative with it but oh well. He's good at world building if nothing else.

I want to run a campaign but we have too many ongoing campaigns already. And most have no end in sight, either.
>>
>>52047021
We use this critchart. The DMPC rolled 20 18 20 with a shortbow vs the very first boss.
>>
When an enemy attacks you, you can use your reaction to make a counterattack at the same time using a monk weapon. If you roll higher than then, then they take the damage they would have rolled, plus the difference in your two rolls. If your roll is lower, then you take the increased damage. Recharges on a long rest.

Too powerful? Too vague?

How do you know when it's time to quit a group?

My friend got me involved with an RPG group with the promise of a 5 person group, plus the GM. By first game day, there were only 3 players.

The GM has thrown us into a lot of dumb situations, keeps making sexual comments about every female NPC plus my female character (all the players and GM are men) and has a near constant involvement of threatened rape and sexual activity in the background 'for realism' in a post apocalyptic cyberpunk game.

I've tried talking to him, but all that's done is have him stop making direct comments about my character, everything else is still going on. My friend would be really disappointed, because this is the only available game we can find in our rural area and the two of us don't know enough people outside of the GM and his one friend to start our own.

No gaming is better than bad gaming.

Are you not having fun? It's time to quit.

It sucks sometimes, but it really is that simple.
>>
>>52046366
This.

Sounds like the game being run is not going to be good for you, ever.
Possibly any game run by this GM either, but he might be different in a less harsh setting.

As always, examine any pursuit you engage in for its actions achieving its desired effect.
If you game in pursuit of fun, but aren't having fun, then you need to take a different action.
This remains true if you game for socialization, system-mastery, or eroticism.
>>
>>52046366
>No gaming is better than bad gaming.

Depends how bad the gaming is, and the amount of effort you put in to get it.

> Are you not having fun? It's time to quit.

Overly simple and blatantly obvious statement that doesn't help OP at all.

> It sucks sometimes, but it really is that simple.

And pithy "life sucks" to finish it off, along with Reddit spacing. I give this 0/10 for advice.

Also, OP:

> my female character

You get what you ask for. Unless you can explain somehow how your character just would not work if she were a man.

I'm a DM running 2 5e D&D campaigns.

One is of my friends who are veteran nerds and know all the ins and outs. One of those guys is a super anal rules guy. Meta games like crazy but is a decent role player.
By meta game I'll say things like "The tiny hobgoblin speaking coherent common" and he'll snap that hobgoblin's are just big stupid goblins. (for the record my hobgoblin is based off of a book series I read where they were small intelligent goblins).

My other group is guys who've never played a tabletop RPG. They're a standard group of bard, fighter, wizard, cleric, and rogue. This group has been playing with me in my college and its a hyper casual game. Fun silliness happens.

Anyways, I let the new guys face against a super nerfed red dragon whelp, and I totally wanted them to kill it. However, the bard saw 1 too many memes about D&D bards fucking dragons and wanted to try and seduce it. This caused a nice chuckle in the group and seemed well welcomed so I thought "Why not." His charisma rolls versus mine. He ended with the higher rolls and now they have a romanced red dragon on call, should they need it.

All around this was a funny situation that really peaked their interest in the game.

I enjoyed it and told my other group about it. Everyone except Meta gamer laughed and agreed.

Then meta game guy had to give me a hard time about "Chromatic dragons don't see humanoids as equals," "Hey Cody, can I make a stupid check to seduce this beholder" things like that. Since then I've done everything I could to piss on established lore to trigger this fucker to get across the point that **It's a game and a DM will do what he needs to make the game fun.**

What do you guys think about people like this? That follow the rules to literally that slight deviations trigger them?

>and he'll snap that hobgoblin's are just big stupid goblins.

He's not much of a rules lawyer if he thinks that. According to the 5e MM, the hobgoblin's Intelligence is 10, which not only is the same as a goblin's, it's also the same as a bog-standard human's.

Meaning default goblins and hobgoblins are as intelligent as humans on average. They're not "stupid". That's actually the POINT of default hobgoblins: they're intelligent, strong, and organized.

BUT I take your point otherwise - your game, your world, your hobgoblins, your rules. Just, something you might want to point out to him next time, perhaps while smiling and resting your head in your hand and inviting him to look it up himself if he doesn't believe you.

Bonus points if you're wearing a tophat and purple suit at the time.

/tg/ new dm here, running a 5e campaign for 9 people on wednesday.

9 is way, way too fucking many.

For me, 4 players is the sweetspot, 5 is tolerable, 6 is a stretch. Anything more than that is an impossible clusterfuck where it's impossible to really give individual PCs any focus or attention.

Feels bad man, dont want to let everyone down and start kicking people out. But with 9 people i know some of them will be let down anyway, even though this is what the players wanted. You have any tips?

Play with 4 one week and 5 the other.
