You're looking for Symbaroum.

>armor as DR
In Symbaroum the players roll all the dice. When you are attacked, you roll to dodge-- if you fail, you roll your armor value to ablate damage.

>magic has meaningful cost for the caster
Each spell you cast builds up "Corruption". Once you cross a threshold your body starts to warp and deform. Too much Corruption eventually mutates you into a horrifying abomination who is thereafter an NPC.

>weapon proficiency as skills
You invest XP in various powers and abilities; most martial ones are built around a particular weapon or set of weapons. Steel Throw is good for thrown weapons, for example, while Man-At-Arms supports sword-and-board. Each comes in three tiers (Novice, Adept, Master) with increasingly cool shit you can do. You can invest in a bunch at Novice tier or ride up into the Master tier if you want to specialize.

See above. Anyone can buy any spell with their XP, with the only downside being the amount of Corruption you get if you buy a spell without first buying the "Tradition" associated with it. There are suggested packages of abilities and powers, but absolutely no restrictions.

>realistic combat (for a d20 system)
Weapons do between d6 - d12 damage. A character will only have 18 health even after heavily investing XP. Combat is lethal, there is no resurrection, and there are optional rules for hit-locations (you can, for example "aim high" for an increased chance to hit 'em in the head or another debilitating place, but with a penalty to your roll).

>good grappling rules
No system has this. Symbaroum's is at least unobstrusive-- opposed Strong tests, and a skill devoted to strangling a punk are more or less what you get.

>good downtime activities/travel mechanics
There is some thought put into the economic reality of the base setting, and the travel time/dangers of moving between settlements. There are not "downtime rules" but advice on making downtime interesting

How would you run this? More specifically, what would the encounters/missions be like? Constant "you encounter X number of orcs" combats would get boring really fast.

But back to the point, it would be something less about what type of enemy they would be fighting, and more about what is their mission. And the means to accomplish it.

>Ambush an enemy caravan/supply train and destroy it before a relief force can reach it and secure it.

>Ambush an enemy loot train without leaving a trail, disappear with the loot (dump wagons in a swamp? Fight a cave to hide it?) so cause orcs to accuse each other of stealing the loot and create infighting in their force.

>Watch a passage to ensure no orc scouts who saw it can return and inform the army of it's existance.

Have them somewhere when something happens that forces them to debate getting involved or not.

The classic shadowrun 7-11 robbery scenario works great for this. They're at 7-11 (whatever you want to call it in setting) and some (antagonists) start robbing the place, waving guns around, whatever. Honestly for CP2020 I'd do like an insane spree killer making a video of it who does a bunch of grandstanding before he starts executing hostages, but that's just because cyberpunk has a harder edge than shadowrun.

Anyway once the players are involved escalate the situation to educate them about what type of response they can expect. In the hood cops won't come anywhere near the location, but the local gang who the 7-11 pays protection to might show up and then the players have to deal with them somehow, or if it's a better neighborhood you might see private security/cops/whatever.

Remember, the goal of the intro session is to introduce the setting and to teach the players what type of feeling the game is going to have. If it's a mission based thing you're trying to run, have the adventure lead into a mission somehow. If it's an open world make it your own type of thing, leave several plot hooks around that let them try to clean up their neighborhood, track down the distributor of the thrill kill videos, etc etc whatever you want to do.

Just have them hired by some shady character to scope out a highly secure office/warehouse, getting some pay up front to equip themselves for the task before going in to steal valuable data/asset or whatever. Maybe don't even tell them what it is. Just tell them they need to steal Item 52A and the approximate size of its sealed container. Maybe tell them some of the items they request will take a few days giving them time/forcing them to recon.

Planning a heist can be as much fun as the actual heist if you make it interesting. Make them try to find out the building plans, delivery days, guard shift rotations, etc. Have a helipad on the roof and access to ventilation shafts big enough for someone to sneak into but they wouldn't fit with heavy armor or a lot of gear. Force the hacker to actually be on site to access the company network.

Make brute forcing their way in through the front door seem like a bad idea. MetalGear equipped dude guarding the front door 24/7.

Have the building as part of a port so they don't know if the Item will be moved by land, sea or air so they can't just wait for it to be moved. Their could also be a crane nearby/taller buildings opposite to help get a better view or get access to the roof. Maintenance or construction workers frequently coming and going.

Then throw a curveball by having the guy who hired them not show up to a meeting before the heist and be out of contact and watch them panic as they realize the item is due to be moved soon and they can either go ahead with the heist or not and possibly incur the wrath of the guy who has already partially paid them up front.

I'd like to request a picture of my Human Artificer. He's the man in A, except younger (mid-to-late twenties, with black hair in the same style) and with the monocle in B covering an obviously-scarred eye. He's wearing the outfit in C (minus the helmet) coupled with the sleeveless long-coat from D. The armor should be more steampunk in nature (rivets, brass ornamentation, clockwork mechanisms, that sort of thing). His boots are the ones in E, with brass-colored metal toes.

Finally, he's wielding the rifle in F, except with a barrel made of brass, without the underslung grenade launcher thing, with the scope and magazine both replaced by crystals, and the main body and stock of the rifle being brass-ornamented woodwork.

Tried The Thousand Thrones? I ran it for over a year with my regulars and they enjoyed it, plenty of "oh shit" moments as they pieced it together. Only downside is when they hated the 'you must love Karl' bits, so took some GM wizardry to fiddle with the story arch so that it appeared they were having more input than they were.

Ended up resurrecting Mannfred, visiting Slayer Keep, travelling with a questing knight for a while, accidentally poisoning his scribe with a love of necromancy and handing him the sion of Nagash.

If it's not an act it's better, but really still boils down to a character trope. And that's not a bad thing. Tropes are meant to be utilized, after all. If you're looking for tropes that are not used often then going for sincerely polite rather than acts polite but explodes into fits of rage then you're headed in the right direction.

Normally, i like it when they stay close friends, but not necessarily stay together. I've concluded two campaigns in my life and in one, the party split up and it was really sweet. One became a king, another, who was essentially a marry poppins character, just disappeared one night. One died during the final battle, and the last one, an immortal, took a boat to "The new world" where he could continue his adventures.

The other campaign ended with the party "meeting up and celebrating with all the friends they made along the way" and it felt cheap and badly done, mainly because the party had zero fucking chemistry and really, left a lot of issues unresolved between them at the end of the campaign. I think having them all go their own ways would have been a far more fitting way to finish my campaign.

On a highly lethal campaign, our characters never spent too much time together since they were always dying, so no good friendships could be formed.
