Hey /tg/, so I'm working on a system of my own entirely from scratch. The problem is that I'm trying to keep this as realistic and plausible as possible in many ways. I just can't get over the inherent implausibility brought about by an initiative based/turn order combat system. You get these ridiculous situations arising where it's like people are just sitting there waiting for this bad shit to happen to them like some dude running up to you and clubbing you over the head when you would have ample time to like lift a gun and shoot him or cast a spell or some shit.
My question really, is is there another way? I've been racking my brain for ages and I just can't get it down. The best I've got so far is the idea of everyone calling their intended actions at the beginning of a turn and then resolving things in some sort of order of action priority? So like the quickest stuff happens first, speaking (which i guess could include things like magic?), then stuff like shooting a pistol, striking an adjacent opponent, then stuff like charging/running a fair distance, loading/firing a musket/crossbow? It just seems quite clunky and getting the "priorities" right in a way that offers enough distinction between actions of different timescales without getting too granular, whilst still encompassing all possible actions?
Really hoping someone here has something helpful to chime in, really I'll take anything at this point. The prospect of listing and ordering all potential actions and assigning them different, accurate priorities is daunting enough as the creator. I an only imagine the headache for potential players

this is a great idea of a video game or a wargame with dedicated players, but its waaay to cumbersome to allow cinematic feats and dramatic roleplaying
trld, your game won't be the usual roleplaying game, it will be a strategic wargame. Consider allowing each player to control multiple units and not needing a dm.
>>52220125
See Hackmaster Basic.

>when you would have ample time to like lift a gun and shoot him or cast a spell or some shit.
Shorten the round length. 1 second works reasonably well.

Use a force more powerful than any magic. Namely, Plot.
Or use alchemy to manufacture gunpowder, ammunitions, explosives, and large weapons of mass destruction and aircraft to air raid the tarrasque.
Final option, climb upon the back of the beast and target sensitive weakpoints until you kill the beast of nature, and as you gaze upon the massive corpse you've created, wonder to yourself on who is truly the villain in this situation.

This is the last opportunity to vote on these before I make a poll for the favourite archetypes.
Candidate for the favourite archetypes poll must fulfil at least one of the following criteria:
>They must have the most votes in their class poll, or be tied for the most votes.
>They must have at least 20% of votes in the poll.
This way, each class has at least one archetype to represent it and the runners-up also get a shot at being included.
Stop saying the Sharpshooter Fighter's worse then Hand Crossbow.
9d6 Hand Crossbow Attacks + 6d12 Battlemaster Dice + 90 Sharpshooter (Feat) damage + 45 Dexterity Damage. That comes to an Average Nova of 31.5 + 39 + 90 + 45 using everything you've got and one Action Surge, 205.5 Damage
8d10 Heavy Crossbow Attacks + 96 Steady Aim + 80 Sharpshooter (Feat) + 45 Dexterity Damage. That's a Nova of 44+96+80+45 using 1 of 3 Steady Aims and 1 Action Surge for, 265 Damage. If it's the first turn with you 18th level ability it's 297.5.
The Sharpshooter can do this twice and then one for half damage. Battlemaster needs a rest or gets one die back each fight.
I'll save the math but without using resources Hand Crossbow does 92.5 while chewing bonus action and Sharpshooter does 87 without using it. If you get a rapid attack it does 107.5.
At low levels Hand Crossbow's amazing but the Sharpshooter's abilities are amazing the higher level you are.
inb4, no one plays high level.

>Has anyone attempted a Gestalt/high-powered campaign?
I rand a gestalt game. Don't do it. It was fun, but it was a special one shot that featured boons, and stuff. You reach the level of gods real quick, which is fun for a game, but is too over the top for a weekly game.
You know the drill folks.
At the game at my local game shop, I rolled a cool swashbuckler character, vaguely morally ambiguous but with a code that tipped him into Neutral Good.
Neutral Good made him a paragon of morality

i made a tifling paladin who was saving that party and needed 1 team mate to hold onto some rope he would use to escape, after getting the monster far enough away from the party and starting to climb the rope one of the players lets go of the rope and i fall, take falling DMG and then get slowly crushed to death, turns out that out of the 3 players 1 ran up stairs, 1 chased her down to get her to use some magic as back up for me and the last one claimed to be racist to tiflings even though he never said/did/implied otherwise before hand.
BUMP
I'm honestly kind of surprised that I never really see anything about Acquisitions Incorporated on /tg/, positive or negative. (I would mostly expect negativity, because, you know, /tg/.)
So, do you have an opinion on it? Are there any other "RPG shows" online that you like?
>Pros
Wil "That Guy" Wheaton is gone, and so is fatass
Perkins seems like he'd be a fun DM to play with
Has probably helped bring more people to tabletop RPGs
>Cons
Has probably helped a lot of "Those Guys" to tabletop RPGs
Gabe's pandering to the audience
The relentless shilling and spinoffs

It feels a bit forced in the 'wacky adventures haha haha' department to me.
I like some of the earlier critical role stuff because it actually felt, and maybe was, just some people playing the game that were kind of OK and doing it for fun.
Acquisitions just seems like it is a bit forced with people competing to be odd and funny.
Not that critical role isn't there now as well.
Adventure zone is the only fun D&D production

What's your favorite way to make a map? I'm getting ready to roll out my own campaign and I'm just bottlenecked on making a map that looks decent.
Would you rule that breadcrumbs can be used as pocket sand?
>>52217765
Of course!
Long-time magicplayer. Started in 4th.
Here's my idea. Tell me why it's bad.
>Cards have point values like in WH.
>Decks are built to point totals. You can't go over limit.
>Your card point costs go down if you play a bigger and less consistent deck.
>Online deck builders.
>Point values are determined based on the higher of: a set value, or the average price of a card over a couple months period.
>The point totals would put your decks into different "weight classes". You'd be able to quantify if your deck is a fair match for someone else's in advance, better than now.
>You'd get a use for all your weaker cards, in lower powered "weight classes".
>Generally, rather than banning cards, if a card is too good, it's point cost is increased.
The only downside I see is a webapp point based deck builder would need to be built and software that tracks card prices and calculates point values would have to be written.
Why isn't this already a thing?
>>52216765
How do you handle lands.
If I build format oppressing deck in highest tier, can I just remove some lands and go down to a lower tier as well?
>>52216790
I was thinking "by price", as the default.
I suppose you could just use cheaper and slower lands to lower it in tier.
Is that a bad thing or a good thing? And why?
Your super high tier deck is never going to fit in the $10 deck weight class, though.
>>52216790
Do you think Mana sources should be tracked separately?
You're at your LGS playing 5E when the oldest grognard you've ever seen slaps your rulebook. What do you do? Keep in mind that he personally gamed with Lord Gygax and has 1E memorized.

You know you just posted OD&D, aka 0e, right?
Why didn't they make Emperor in to a dreadnought?
>>52216509
Idk I don't really know the lore or play the game but I image it has something to do with him looking way more badass sitting in his throne.
Also the energy required to keep him from truly dying is way more than a Dreadnaught could contain, presumably.
