Because people who do it put a ton of effort into things most players will never question or wonder about, and possibly never even encounter. This is not true for all groups, but a group that cares about the world they play in is usually as satisfied with "rule of cool" or improvised answers as they are with well thought-out bottom-up designs. Whereas Murderhobo Inc. doesn't care, and never will, so the effort is wasted. I wouldn't go so far as to say it gets no respect, but it's largely a waste of time outside a very particular subset of playgroups.

Anyone here do freeform RP shit? I do, and I have to say it's one of the most masochistic hobbies you can get into (Aside from spending $3000+ on plastic crack) and I'll outline some of the reasons why.

One summer, me, some friends and a few /tg/ soldiers deconstructed a free form roleplay. We had the exact opposite happen; our characters were fairly low power manly men (town guardsmen, boxing alchemist, half-demon without a tragic edgy back story, old wizard with a body that was falling apart from using magic too frequently, tactical operator, Victorian porcelain doll given life) and everyone else was either a vampire, a werewolf, a demon or a literal god.
Most roleplay consisted of us drinking in the bar, or apparently "insulting" characters, and when challenging them to fight being told we "weren't worth their time" and them promptly teleporting away.
It was pretty fun for the two months or so it lasted before we destabilized the region enough to force the " Demon King" to be destroyed in game and then ban't and then we left because that was our goal from the beginning.
