I have a paladin on my table who is annoying. He keeps trying to capture enemies (instead of killing) and when he does he starts giving them moral lessons. He asks them why they were doing it, explain why it was wrong, tell them of something good they could do in it's place.

One time for example he defeated a group of bandits, then asked why they were attacking people. I thought of a quick excuse and said 'because we are poor and don't know of anything else to do.' Bad move. He then released one by one of the bandits, teached them how to work, confiscated their weapons and then went to the village while his party guarded them, traded them for fucking farming material and gave them, and they told them to scatter and become honest people.

Can I make him fall for being more good than lawful? After all what purpose is there on a paladin who isn't ready to kill?

Have the bandits sell their farming gear and buy weapons, then raid the village. Rape the children and give rise to even more bandits and evil.

Stopped reading there.
You are a horrible person and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Mercy and justice are meted out on case-by-case basis, at paladin's discretion, as long as it doesn't break his code.

DMs are usually pretty quick at threatening to "drop" your alignment if you start off a character as any flavor of "good", but you act counter to that. Fair enough I suppose.

But I have never encountered any DM who ever threatened to "raise" an evil character's alignment if they hadn't really done much bad lately or for repeatedly acting selflessly. The one and only time it was ever brought up it ALWAYS gets justified with some variation of "I need them alive/healthy/wealthy to help and benefit myself."

Neutral characters can literally get away with anything they want to, no matter how inconsistent to any sort of character concept they are playing out. Their alignment is guaranteed never to budge.

It's not a contest between you and your players, you're all there to have fun

Present players with situations that have multiple solutions. ex, attack the sleeping ogre, sneak by, or try to bribe him with food?

Allow them to TRY things, but be realistic with them about their chances of success, based on the difficulty of the challenge and the capabilities of their players.

Don't be afraid to punish them when they do dangerous shit. Attacking people in public places will get them arrested, doing backflips on the edge of a volcano might cause them to fall in, etc.

Don't tell them what to do, tell them what is happening around them and let THEM decide their goals.

Have any fa/tg/uys played the Pendragon RPG? Edition 5.2 came out recently, and since it was on sale and I've always loved knights in shining armor, I bought a copy.

The system itself looks simple enough, IIRC it's based off of Basic Roleplaying to some extent, albeit with a d20 instead of a d100. The way every knight has different virtues and passions struck me as pretty neat. I'm curious if anyone has any experience running or playing the system and how it actually handles in practice, though. Does anyone have any stories to tell?

How do I portray souls-like NPCs correctly?

I have a vast scifi world with lots of crashed ships and haywire machines yada yada, and only a handful of less-than-sane survivors.

Any advice for how to handle said characters?
37 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
>>52734828
How about you think about what "souls-like" characters are even supposed to be and then portray them like that. That would work.
Otherwise, don't use memes as personalities and come up with how they'd really act
>>
>>52734828
Souls characters often have one singular thing that keeps them going. They cling to this to avoid losing the will to live.

Siegmeyer, for example, considers himself a skilled and heroic knight. Your constant assistance is appreciated - he can't rightly insult your efforts - but they grate on him and make him realize his own failures. In the end, he fails to sacrifice himself for your safety, and loses his will to try any further. His daughter finds him at the bottom of the world, and gives him news from his wife that finally ends him.

Give them one ideal or practice that lets them cling to sanity and anchor themselves. They know this is all that's keeping them together, and it wears on them. They only have one reason to live, whether or not they want to admit it.

Also, give them all unique laughs. Sardonic laughter is charming and important for the sort of atmosphere the's characterso cultivate. People often laugh in spite of themselves.

So, we all know that WoTC's "Plan Escape" teaser turned out to be drumming up interest for the release of the Enhanced Edition of Planescape: Torment. But, let's suppose that this indicated WoTC may be considering a Planescape sourcebook - a Manual of the Planes, an Adventurer's Guide to Sigil, whatever - in the near future.

Like the title says, what sort of new PC races could such a book include? The original Planescape corebook gave us the Tiefling, the Bariaur, and the Githzerai, whilst the Planewalker's Handbook expanded the list with Aasimar, Genasi, and Rogue Modron. Other "planar" races in other editions have included bladelings, satyrs, hamadryads, eladrin, shadar-kai and githyanki.

So, what races do you think 5e could stat up for those who want a planes-based campaign? What races would you want to see in a 5e Planescape setting?

Heck, just what material do you think 5e absolutely needs before you can run a 5e Planescape game?

That's a pretty cool picture. I've not read any 5E, what book is it?
>>
>>52734670
It's in the 5th edition Dungeon Master's Guide, on page fifty-seven (57).
>>
Personally, if we did get a "Player's Guide to Sigil", these are races I could see making an appearance, presuming that more 'common' monstrous PC type races would be better served in a Spelljamming-focused sourcebook...

* New Tiefling variants: We did get Demonic/Abyssal tieflings in one UA, so a refinement of that, and new subraces for Yugoloths and/or Night Hags and/or Succubi makes sense to me.

* New Genasi variants: Although not quite as fluid as the old Elemental Chaos, with the new Elemental Planes line-up, there's still room for Genasi outside of the Earth/Air/Water/Fire quartet. Hell, it's not like we didn't have para' and quasi' genasi in editions past.

* Githzerai: This race is pretty much the only "iconic" and original Planescape PC race we don't have in 5e so far (Genasi appeared in Princes of the Apocalypse, Tieflings in the corebook, Aasimar in Volo's Guide to Monsters). With the awesomeness that is Dak'kon now returned to PC, why not give the option to explore the Children of Zerthimon to players?

* Githyanki: I've honestly never seen the rationale for the entire githyanki race to be so blind to their own hypocricies. I feel that even if they would be a rarity as a whole, in a game where playing "the exotic" is supposed to be normal, why shouldn't "githyanki who realized Vlaakith has enslaved them" be any more unplayable than "drow who's working alongside non-drow" in an FR game?

* Bariaur: These are the third of the original Planescape Races, but I don't honestly know if WoTC could pull them off. Plus, they were always kind of goofy...

* Rogue Modron: The most famous of Planescape's races, after Planetouched and Githzerai. With Nordom now back in the public eye, why not give the chance to let people play his kinsfolk?

* Shadar-Kai: The 5e Great Wheel did retain the Shadowfell, in one of its better decisions, and Shadar-Kai were the "iconic" Shadowfell natives of 4th edition. I can't think of a better "dead realmer" to have walking the planes.

Are any of the Tolkien RPGs any good?

I heard that there are three big ones, namely "Middle-earth Role Playing" by Iron Crown Entertainment, "The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game" by Decipher, and "The One Ring" by Cubicle 7. I'm inclined to look at the latter since it's the newest but I suppose that doesn't mean best.

Also, anyone got any stories for inspiration?

I sort of like the Decipher one myself, but honestly, a lot of my biggest problems with Tolkien based RPGs have more to do with the setting and less to do with whatever system you play. Don't get me wrong, I love Tolkien, the sort of guy who reads HoME and his various letters for fun, but unless you're willing to play a very specific kind of game, I don't think his world is great for an RPG. Especially not the sort of RPG that most people who are interested in Tolkien games want to play, where they're Big Dudes who wander around and fight Nazgul and hobknob with the other big cheeses of the setting.

That being said, a long time ago, I once played a very nice game which was a stealth tolkien one; it was only towards the end that we realized these raiders from across the sea were the Numenoreans in the second age.
>>
>>52729307
Can't talk about any but "The One Ring" and that is awesome. I can't stress it enough that if there is any Middle Earth focused RP anyone should try, it's that one.
