I once had a game where one of the characters, a rogue IIRC, had a background about his mother being literally a whore and him growing up in the streets and becoming a thug, and adventuring to try to get out of that life.

Later on, as he got more successful, they swung back to their hometown. He looks up his mother, and pays her pimp to force her to fuck his horse, all the while ranting about how she could have left all of this behind if she wasn't stupid and weak, as the money he needed to pay for this was an afternoon's earnings for him.

That's mostly because it's a decent system, but also because 5th went back to effectively 3.5 edition rules, so now there's a three way split between people that play 3.5, pathfinder, and 5th yet it's all effectively the same, stale game.

Players want something new but also different, and they aren't getting it.

For me personally I barely got to try 4e when it came out because my group decided they didn't like it after a single session so I didn't really have an opinion. I rediscovered the game recently and have fallen in love. I've always enjoyed tactics games and 4e is really the only tabletop rpg I've played that scratches that itch. 3.PF is bloated and broken, and 5e just feels boring.

But beyond that, I really enjoy 4e's take on D&D lore and the 'Points of Light' setting that puts a strong focus on exploration, mystery, and the unknown. I feel inspired every time I read 4e setting fluff; a good example is that article on gnolls that most people seem to like.

Honestly with the way modern RPGs are going I doubt we'll ever see anything like 4e again, at least not on the same scale. It makes me kind of sad, but at least the only obstacle to playing 4e right now is a lack of players.

I'm a little iffy on cards that refer to SPECIFIC cards, if only because they're narrow, but I actually really like "cards that refer to stuff that's not out yet", like Tarmogoyf teasing Planeswalkers.

I have made all the mini-expansions for Terra Mystica, first on cardboard and later on foamcore.

Besides that I have made foamcore inserts for my complete collection of Dominion, reducing it down to two of the original boxes. Nations also got a foamcore insert (with plenty of space left over) but the thing I'm most proud of is my foamcore insert for Lords of Waterdeep with the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion.

I kinda want to make an insert for TM but the box is so tightly packed I have no idea how to approach it.

When you guys store expansions in with their base games, do you throw away the expansion box?

Thanks! This is definitely good advice. I've been pulling from the Avatar source material to try and recreate (loosely) the abilities showcased in the show. of course, the hard part is making certain abilities function and feel unique.
