Is it wrong to criticize your GM? Like for example when they make an error in continuity or something. I had a really masterful DM for some time and got into the habit of thinking it was all intentional and I don't much. Thoughts? How to deal with bad DM?

Critics are fine, but do it before the session picks up speed or after it's done, don't fuck up the pacing if it's not necessary.

Be polite (ie. don't be a dick) when criticising and explain yourself at length. People can't improve if you don't tell them, but just saying it's shit won't be good for anyone.
>>
>>53101325

I think politely asking is usually fine. "Hey, last time you mentioned she had green eyes but you just said they're brown, is that.. deliberate or..." etc. If he fucked up he'll probably just say so.

It's sometimes hard, though. My DM had us go back to my hometown and meet a girl from my backstory, and she acted like an insane whore. She was a sensible, respectable young woman in my backstory who happened to have a child out of wedlock. I want to ask the DM.. is she acting weird because something is going on? But.. that's basically saying "you suck at RPing this character and didn't pay attention to my shit." I don't think he's doing it 'on purpose' and actually just thought that's how she is, and it doesn't matter much so.. I just let it go. Still, super weird.

However, years ago when I ran a game for my friends who had played a lot of D&D I had a 'dmpc' and deliberately used their assumption that an npc like that would be Word of God to lead them off course and deceive them. He was actually one of the bad guys in disguise, and they were meant to notice a lot of things like the way he acted, certain lies, etc. But they never ever caught on or questioned anything. I would have him straight up contradict himself and they wouldn't care because they were looking at their phones. One of them convinced one of the other bad guys to be on their side without fully informing the party what he was up to, then they told 'dmpc' about it and, wanting her dead, he told them she was tricking the PC and that they should kill her. The party agreed. Campaign ended before they got to it because I just didn't want this ooc party conflict or their shittiness anymore.

The golden rule- Wait until after the session.

If you notice something or want to mention it, bring it up Once. If the GM doesn't want to deal with it now, wait until later.

As always, try and make criticism positive. Assuming your GM isn't an arrogant asshole, they'll likely care about what you think and appreciate useful advice or tips for improving the game experience for everyone involved.

However, it's also important to remember that GMing can very much be a style thing. What you think of as wrong might be their preferred way of doing it, and sometimes a degree of compromise is necessary.

So... how does the Emperor of the Imperium reproduce? Like... is there a mother involved? I know that the primarchs were genetically engineered, but is it possible for all of the primarchs and literally every legitimate space marine in human history to be conceived without a single iota of female genetic material involved? Is it possible to make the gene seed with purely XY chromosome sets and shit? And if the Emperor in his prime or one of the primarchs wanted to reproduce organically, would it even be possible? If so, would they do it like normal humans do? Or are the Emperor and all the Primarchs members of some ascended species only casually related to humans that is either incompatible with humans or just reproduce asexually? They're still organic organisms (Some of them at least), why the fuck would they only be able to reproduce in a fucking lab?

AND HOW THE FUCK DOES KING CRIMSON WORK!?
>>
>>53099496
That's a thing. I think they are called Sensei. The Emperor actually has literal children.
Unfortunately, because they aren't exactly normal, a lot of them got hunted down and murdered, to the point that there are only a few, if any left in the setting as it is now.
The Primarch's likely can't, because they are space marines with all that entails, but who knows?

Railroading tastefully isn't inherently bad.

If the GM gives us choices to make but there's certain things that are very obviously something that would call for our character's interest, i don't care if I 100% know it's a hook for the GM's linear road, it's still where the game is directed and I understand that my GM has either prepared something or has something in mind.

You don't ignore the screams of someone being attacked because "HURR IT MUST BE A TRAP" and give me shit the rest of the way for following it into the master's dungeon i know in my heart he spent hours preparing - it makes YOU fill the role of That Guy in my eyesrather than HIM for making a linear storyline.

Not every campaign has to be a sandbox where you spend your time looting and shopping, sometimes there's an actual plot to follow and a story to be told and made and you have to be a special brand of asshole to ignore them on purpose knowing the consequences. If I know the campaign has a story and we all know it's not a sandbox campaign, i'm gonna act accordingly. I'm here to roleplay and follow a story, not play The Sims: RPG if that's not what we fucking agreed to do.

God I hate that kind of attitude so much, it makes sessions longer than they should be. Follow the scream, investigate the footprints, read the notes, climb onto the fucking friendly golem's back who's giving us a free ride, i don't need your half an hour long speech on how your character is a loner who doesn't trust anyone.

FUCK

Marvel Heroic Roleplaying is actually structured around this sort of benign railroading: with its Act system, the GM is supposed to outline possible actions and story paths for them and negotiate how the emergent details play into prepared scenes and segments. Also, player characters have their characterizations and character arcs prewritten as their specific milestones.

It's a good system, but it really is designed to play out very specific and structured stories. If you're the type of GM to normally overprepare for other systems, you'd get a *lot* out of it.

Do you like rules light, narrative heavy stuff? If so, you'll probably like Masks and most other PbtA games depending on genre preference.

Personally they lack a certain amount of mechanical weight to keep me interested for long, but I respect the elegance of their design and enjoy them well enough for one shots or short campaigns between meatier games.

How do I write a good Chaotic Evil character?
31 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
Write Lawful Evil character, have them occasionally do something pointless and petty.
>>
the important thing to understand about chaotic evil is that it's classically written as stupid evil. the goblins that mindlessly attack villages despite getting stomped by any starter party is pretty stupid.
if you want your chaotic evil to be 'good', it's as simple as having them understand their limits and acting within them, viciously. if they know they can get away with something with no repercussions and it benefits them, they're going to do it.

>Soft sci-fi.
>Another galaxy.
Pretty sure that makes it hard sci-fi by default.
Like any setting where inter-stellar travel is possible makes it hard sci-fi.

Soft sci-fi would be something that's more like "twenty minutes into the future", like changes in agriculture mean that food can be grown anywhere and soil can be made fertile through a chemical injected into the soil, etc.
Making technology that seems very fantastical into a mundane triviality.
Especially where aliens are involved.
>>
>>53098196
Hard sci-fi generally means that the laws of nature apply as we know them now, so interplanetary travel takes days or weeks and interstellar travel takes decades or centuries.

Hello elegan/tg/entlemen, ca/tg/irls.

I am a GM for a level 5 Pathfinder party, who recently allied themselves with a tribe of kobolds.
I'm tired of seeing the kobolds as "free combat XP", or comic relief, so I want to make it that one of their tribe is actually the big bad.

So, how do I make a kobold a threatening, credible villain?

>>
Machavellian, full to the brim with cunning, easily represented by giving him 2-3 other languages he speaks fluently.

His people fight dirty like the vietkong, has a die-hard cadre of well-drilled disciples who move through underbrush quietly laying simple but effective traps, blowdarts and shortbows with poisoned projectiles.

The threat he provides is never going to be physical, so make it much much worse than that.
>>
>>53097488
Just make it a big-bold. Whenever I run kobolds I fluff them as being the product of unfertilized dragon eggs. They, in turn, have a chance to give birth to larger dragonoids, who can in turn eventually give birth to lesser dragons etc. The first step is basically just a dragonborn.

If you dont want to go that far, you could make them have some kind of demon-god-idol that a shaman can channel to make himself into a motherfucker.
>>
>>53097562
this sounds very much in tune with what I was trying to get. One thing I had considered was making him more or less addicted to potions of Fox's Cunning (+ intelligence), so he becomes a better tactician or even give him a few wizard levels.

Thoughts?

Well Hello Anons, you caught me Thinking about the Fae-Realms.
Since I'm building a few NPCs and stuff I would like you to ask a few questions about your opinion on these mystical creatures.
First of, what do you like the most about them? And by that I don't think of an answer like "i wanna fuck a Dryad" and why are mortals so fascinated with them?
Why would a mortal aspire to become one of them - if it is somehow possible??
Did you ever play a character who did this or a similiar thing??

Also pic only slightly related but, hot Fay females I guess...

I tend to make my Fae based after folk lore.
I suggest listening to these episodes of The Lore podcast.

http://www.lorepodcast.com/episodes/11
http://www.lorepodcast.com/episodes/14

I think people are fascinated with things we don't understand.

For me, Fae are not only things, it is a place. A place made up of the threads and laws that holds our universe together.

Its what keeps space turning and holds our feet to the ground. But it also life also comes from it. Humans and animals, but sometimes something nor alive nor dead crawls out of it. sometimes that thing will look fairly human and other times it is an unfathomable monstrosity.
