Why do D&D players/DMs/writers still think that the concept of D&D-style dungeons is believable?
It's so fucking contrived it's ridiculous.
You've got a bunch of monsters and stronghold defenders spreading themselves throughout a complex, but they're not going to investigate any weird noises or raise alarms, oh no, they'll just sit tight in their rooms while adventurers systematically fight room after room. Organized defense forces are for chumps, am I right?
There are traps everywhere in a dungeon for some god forsaken reason. Lots of them are magical too. Instead of paying for high-tech/magical doors and locks, and alarms to help organize the defense forces, let's get our engineering department to design elaborate deathtraps instead!
There's treasure spread around in nooks and crannies. I mean, who needs a treasury or a vault when you can leave gold and magic items lying around in corners, eh?
The only reasons dungeons still have traction are because it's easy mode for DMs running tightly contained adventures, everyone's been Stockholmed into the genre convention, and the name of the game has "dungeons" in it.
Why do you still use dungeons in your game?

I played DnD 3.5 in highschool. Was wanting to get back into playing table tops. I don't think I want to buy 5k$ worth of miniatures and books, so I would probably be down with pdfs.
Any suggestions on what to play? Starfinder looks cool, but won't be out until August.

If you want more than that, what genres are you interested in?
You don't need to buy miniatures either. I'd recommend using Roll20 or just using makeshift tokens if you need them. A bit of paper with a drawing and a name will do just fine.

I like CoC, 40k, DnD and anything cyberpunky.
Problem is not knowing enough to do a god damn thing with any of them. Shadowrun seems like it would be cool, but idk what all pdfs I'd need to download.

They would unite as much as skaven can once they see how utterly tiny they are compared to the forces that are all around them and that can stomp them out without effort.
A fun idea for space skaven one anon created a while ago was that the skaven have infested the webway after the eldar's fall.
Expanding on that idea.......
The skaven are only now starting to bleed out into the materium/really set their plans into motion.
The webway skaven had been in the process of building a 13 member strong skaven pantheon of composed of cartoonishly evil things like spite, feralism, jealousy, thievery, ect. They all have cults following they but but all skaven are actually ruled their one true god however. The immensely powerful Horned rat/Galice...akaThe mistaken "chaos" god malal.
Skavens are the ones who snagged the two missing primarchs way back then. The poor kids got collected and have been getting farmed for their gene-seed ever since.

You're an assassin or something. You've infiltrated a radical Inquisitor and his retinue. Your assets:
A) Their complete trust somehow
B) A bolt pistol with precisely one bullet in it
C) A tranquilizer dart or some shit
D) A quick escape route
You get to shoot one of them in the head with a guaranteed kill, take another prisoner and get away with it alive, but the rest will escape justice (at least from you). Here are your marks:
>Ordo Xenos Inquisitor: seeks archaeo- and xenos tech for his own purposes, claims these things can serve the Imperium, has dozens of safehouses full of secret stashes and heretical knowledge that nobody but you know of
>Interrogator, second in command: Blank, wants to know everything about everything and teach it to everyone too, head full of uncounted dark lore
>Psyker: Beta or maybe even Alpha, dabbles in Chaos sorcery, trafficks with daemons, knows many powerful names in the beyond
>Techpriest: Cuts up aliens for fun and knowledge, has forbidden tech everywhere (including in his body), shares the metal bits of his body with a Man of Iron
>Stormtrooper: Autistic, second to only a Vindicare in marksmanship, unsanctioned psyker
>A sniper: Draws every gory shit he sees into a little notebook, the book shows him pictures of the future, Cognitae trained
>Another techpriest: Builds up new weird guns as a hobby, secretly a clone created using heretical tech

Capture the Inquisitor and deliver evidence to the Ordo Hereticus and Adeptus Mechanicus. The rest of the gang need to be dealt with but they're not time-critical like the sorcerer.

The party was split up.
One group was bravely tackling the shopping, while the others were visiting some necromancers (lawful evil variety, probably).
The shopping group accomplished their mission (cute outfits for all!) and returned to their temporary home base where they encountered an ogre weather mage who was willing to fill their contract for a badass storm.
Meanwhile, the other group had been dealing with agents of the emperor, trying to learn about a Cult they were going to come into conflict with shortly.
Now everyone's in their temporary home base, their ogre friend is summoning up a storm, and they've got approximately eight hours before they kick in some doors and righteously smite some evildoers.
So obviously they're planning to head out to the paladin's village and visit their family.
Running games for girls is different.

System-wise 8th is actually looking pretty nice. Fluff-wise it's also pretty good, Especially since all the Marinefags are rage-quitting because their Autism can't handle the new stories about plastic figurines being different than the old stories about plastic figurines.
Honestly... as long as you're not a Marines player who cares about fluff it's looking pretty good.
