Variant Human
Faction Agent
Fighter. GW or Duelling fighting style
Magic Initiate (pick Friends (Axii), Mending (he's a self-sufficient dude, also he at one time fixes a pot with Igni etc.), and Thunderwave (Aard).
You go Eldritch Knight, and at level three you take Blade Ward and Shield (both represent Quen or Heliotrop), Burning hands (Igni) and Thunderwave (you already have 1 freecast, but you want it ''on tap'' as well). At levels where you can take spells from other schools, you get Sleep for Somne and other spells you think resemble certain uses of a Sign, for example Charm Person for Axii, but don't get something like Fireball for Igni.

You put below average to average to above average points in Charisma (Geralt isn't a guy people are instantly friends with, however he does possess some presence. Judge as you will), average to above average in intelligence, average to MAYBE above average in Wisdom (think of the Beast and the Beauty story in The Last Wish, he figures the girl is a vampire but it takes him a while), Above average Strength AND Dex (take your choice which you put higher, though the Wolf School fighting style is arguably based more on technique, pirouttes etc. than on brute strength). Constitution must be above average to high, he survived the mutation rituals and takes some pretty stiff hits in the books.

Alignment is a problem, because although Geralt lives by a kinda Neutral Good alignment, he does some questionable shit both early and later in life (killing people in an inn to get the attention of King Foltest, helping for money instead of the good of his own heart, ''tricking'' Ciri's parents to get her as a destined child), though on the other hand he does some incredibly selfless stuff at times. I think the Butcher of Blaviken story is some good insight into his way of thinking, which you could only call ''pragmatic''. If you want the ''real'' Geralt, don't play his as in the games, as he is an amnesiac, check the books.

What resources should I check out to learn more about the Forgotten Realms setting and its lore? I keep seeing it mentioned and, since it's the 'default' setting for 5e, I wanted to learn more about it.

400+ books.
All of 1e-3.5 because 4e tainted the fuck out of FR lore with Points of light
This includes Dungeon Magazine, Polyhedron, and Dragon Magazine
And the Forgotten Realms Canon comics.
Notable lore-based events are also synonymous with edition and rules changes subject to the setting, Time of troubles was 1e-2e and Vecna's Whack-ass trip to Sigil was 2e to 3e-3.5

You're in for it now, kiddo.

>omg i love this system because I don't have to look up rules in the book

Why is this even considered a valid complaint? Oh no! Oh no! the DM's oh-so-precious immersive description is interrupted for 30 seconds while we page through a book! Even when we played 3.5 no one cared about this. Do you do this in board games, too? "OH well I don't remember this exact rule so instead of looking it up we'll make something up because reading is hard." Then the result is DM fiat controlling most of the game which is stupid because most DMs are shit.

I'm thinking about starting a tabletop roleplaying game with a bunch of friends. Our native language is German, and while I my English is good enough to get the important information from an RPG rulebook, this isn't true for all of my friends and switching back and forth between two languages while playing is awkward.
I am quite familiar with DnD 3.0, 3.5, Pathfinder and 5e. But most of those books are only available in English. I also really don't wanna play DSA (The Dark Eye).
Do you guys have any suggestions on what games to play? Do you have any PDFs to share?
Will bump with inspirational art.
Do you guys know

Only books I own in German are degenesis and savage world's, savage world's was my first RPG it's nice that it is a generic system but I think it is somewhat clunky and I only played a single campaign with it.
I really like degenesis but the setting is hit or miss for most people and you can't really play without being at least somewhat familiar with the fluff, and the books are quite expensive, I don't really know how expensive the pdfs are though.

I have too much time and don't care if I get rangebanned.
TL;DR - half the people on this board are horrible degenerates and it's not going to change, so instead of trying to sell your own custom race to the GM, post your fetishes and I'll try to write them into a place, race, setting or whatever (feel free to specify) that would make it into one of my own games. .

The main thing that makes magical realm a negative thing is that it's forced in - it involves some kind of distortion of the setting, character or game itself in favor of the player having their fetish fulfilled. Most of the awkwardness and group-melting fights are born not from the content itself, but from the fact that one player is trying to derail, divert or monopolize the game because they're much more engaged than the rest of the players and more likely to burst into spaghetti when it's denied them.
At the fundament of it, magical realm is the consequence of a disproportionate and one-sided interest distorting the game - just like the people who have to have "clever" uses for every spell and sperg when they can't be "cool", the people who need animu everywhere or indeed the people who like dragons to the exclusion of everything else.
And just like those people, they're bad enough when they have pre-published content, but where they're really, really bad is when they're forced through scarcity or burgers to make their own homebrew. You can't trust a player with a hidden boner to play constructively, but if he has to come up with his own homebrew, everyone involved has already lost. Compare catfolk to chakats, Mage: the Awakening to Witch Girls Adventures (there's something to it), Sonic character claims to Sonic-verse OCs, and an actual half-dragon race to "uh, I wanna play a dragon man, uh, it doesn't matter what kind as long as he can have the wings and the fire breath and he can be over 300 kilos".
56 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
Someone's going to lose in the end, but it's both a lot better for the game and better for the player suggesting it that you get it from somewhere else. That "somewhere else" can as well be a perma-GM with nothing else to do - I know that personally I'd be a lot more likely to allow something someone else has thought up in my games even if the player obviously has to hide a hard-on, because the greatest warning flag for homebrew is that the player gets defensive or accusative when other people try to get in on creating it.
And to be honest, I like it when my players add a bit of fetish content once in a while, as long as they're not trying to monopolize it or push it on everyone else. It gives a sense that there's something more than just game design at work in the world - that even in-setting, there are dirty bits, people with their own preferences and things that aren't family-friendly. Something as small as that can make a world seem alive, and the more hooks I can give people so that the things they want to play can actually get into a game, the better.

A tribe of humans settle down in an area mainly characterized by thick, rolling woods and sandstone caverns, like many places in Eastern Europe.
First of all, homes are extremely scarce in a thickly-wooded region where people haven't invented the axe - so they go to the caves. Caves are rather small, though, and infested with monsters and/or natural hazards, so making a home becomes a tedious task that involves a lot of digging and a lot of paranoia.
Women, getting pregnant and having to protect their children, are naturally relegated to the caves, where they can be safe and sound - and from a combination of repeated pregnancies and lack of exercise, coupled with "women stay inside the caves" becoming a cultural norm, it starts becoming normal for women to eat and get pregnant to the degree where they can't actually leave a few central rooms of the cavern complex. It starts taking multiple men to feed one woman, and as married men bring in friends to help find food for their obese wives to show that they're good hunters and can keep their wife safe, the secret comes out and the tribe ends up with a system where a single "family group" of men work, live and sleep together in the woods for weeks on end to find food for a woman who's the centerpiece of their group.
In thick woods and deep water, the strongest man is the sleek, nimble one - and weight for a man starts taking on negative undertones of laziness, vanity and lack of self-control. Fat or muscular men are considered unmanly, even feminine (if they're fat), and dominated, bullied and otherwise whipped by the skinny men who can hide, swim, climb and run a lot better in the thick woods.
Weeks in the wilderness, though, tend to take all-male groups to a worrying level of homoeroticism - and when they get back, the one who "lost" is taken to get snu-snu'd by the massive centerpiece woman of their group, while the "winner" has actual sex with her.

I might not be the only one who's been thinking all the monstrous humanoids, orcs and goblins and whatnot, have been really overused in virtually any fantasy even remotely inspired by D&D? These little fuckers are swarming everywhere, even though most of the time very little of value would be lost if you were to simply replace them with less civilized human tribes: roving barbarians, jungle savages, wildmen of savannah, pygmies, and the sort. It rather cheapens the whole fantasy thing and makes them commonplace and mundane and boring.

A lot of times (in many OSR blogs) the first solution seems to have been to refluff them into something weirder and more alien, but I'm taking a far more simple approach: leave them as they are, just make them far less common.

Each particular monster was spawned by a different deranged wizard, demon, fairy queen, ancient dragon sorcerer, super-advanced bio-engineering alien, or whatever other fearsome menace hiding somewhere in the dark corners of the world. Some others may have spontaneously popped into existence from the caves of some mountain range or another, and still day there in the dark to this day. Maybe a few are a remnant of a previous lost age. Whatever their origin, their reach is a small one and they rarely rise to bother the humans much. They bring with them the darkness of the earth, or the will of some demon lord. They're unknown, and therefore feared.

We've got orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, gnolls, kobolds, ogres, lizardfolk, minotaurs, trolls, xvarts, tasloi, bullywugs, maybe some giants, bunch of undead, and then a big pile of even more obscure or homebrewed creatures. That's a lot of weird shit to hide in the forests, the mountains, and the wizard towers and castles. Plenty to occupy myself with for a good while.

What do you think? Am I on the right track or should I turn back and go down a different route? Maybe got a more specific idea or two on the origins of some type of bugger?

That's a perfectly legit and fine idea.

Personally, I would make any creature that is human-like, such as elves, dwarves, orcs, and giants, just be mutated and changed versions of humans, similar to how orcs in the LOTR are actually just tortured and mutilated elves, and Uruks are further changed orcs.

I would make any significantly different race, such as dragons, be their own thing though. But they would have a completely different morality and way of doing things from humans.
>>
>>53491904
Personally I'm not much of a fan of elves and others being changed humans: I like it better with humans being the young race that popped in after the elves and dwarves already fucked it all up.
>>
>>53491680
I think what makes them more interesting is having them have good reason to come into conflict with humans, which provides a non-combat solution. Treat them like animals that are intelligent enough to make spears.

Example: frogmen live in a nearby river, not a huge problem normally. They usually spend their days fighting with eachother over fish, then hibernating in the mud once they've had their fill. A new mill was built up river, and its screwed with their supply of fish, so they've taken to moving overland to find more food, and settled in a lake nearby.

The reason they seem contrived is because they're just there to be killed and add some action to a session. Filling out their ecological/sociological roll more helps make them feel less shoe-horned.

In short, I wouldnt say that making them less common would be the optimal solution. However, making PROBLEMS caused by them less common is.
