They shouldn't, the "private" flag only specifies that peers are only allowed to come from the trackers, and not the DHT or PEX or other decentralized sources. But the client can still upload the torrent and metadata (i.e. magnets) for private torrents, there's no specification against that. I've downloaded many private torrents from a magnet.

The fact that some shitty clients also don't do that just makes them shittier.

Therefore a private magnet still works as long as it has the correct trackers. And at least one seeder with a non-shitty client.

Still nope. The peer view says they all have 100 % of the torrent. It never shows any zero-percenters.

I was able to download a FellatioJapan torrent (with the private flag) someone posted here via a HTTP torrent cache and the torrent was plenty alive and had zoodles of seeds and peers.

The magnet link showed a good swarm of 100-percenters, nobody willing to upload.
