This is probably the 2nd best (after 7 Samurai) samurai movie of all time and one of the best movies I've ever seen. I remember when I saw it as a kid and was shocked by it and was deeply moved. I never forgot it. Cinematically it is amazing as well and it was perfectly shot.

That's the case with all manga-based live action though even more than with manga to anime adaptations.
The only exeption I can think of is Oldboy but Park Chan-Wook is a filmmaking genius and also korean so it doesn't really count.

Even super popular stuff like Death Note is barely watchable in live action. It's pretty pathetic for Japan that it needs an americanized version like edge of tomorrow to make a worthwile adaptation...

Basically Otomo's family got disrespected (though not really, the reality is Otomo just has a really bad temper), he gets unjustified retribution out of it, and Otomo's head clan ends up going to war with a rival clan that they were at peace with for years. And along the way Otomo breaks pretty much every code about "honor" among Yakuza in order to become more powerful.

The Shintaro Katsu ZATOICHI movies and TV show are a very high recommendation. All 25 movies and I forgot how many seasons.
The Yakuza Papers aka Battles Without Honor and Humanity. 5 film series about the post-War period in Japan obviously involving the Yakuza. Had a compilation or whichever type of movie with the first four movies.
