Want to know just how much worse than Alonso Kimi is?

Last year Alonso had 161 points. So far this year, Raikkonen has 123.

Despite having a significantly better car this year, Raikkonen would need to score 40 points in the last two races, or a race win and a third place, in order to beat Alonso's total from last year.

If you combine the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Alonso has 172 points. Raikkonen has 178.

is Hakkinen the most overrated driver in recent memory? perhaps only Alonslow can rival him in that regard (ffs why do so many still think Alonso, given equal cars, is the best driver on the grid?)
>>
>>63311854
Alonso is definitely overrated, but I'd say Hakkinen is the opposite of that. His lack of motivation at the start of 2000 is probably the only thing that makes other god tier drivers stand up to him. His natural talent eclipses that of any other driver in history, including MSC (who was heavily carried by his unbelievable work ethic, leadership and determination), Senna and Prost.

>(ffs why do so many still think Alonso, given equal cars, is the best driver on the grid?)
That depends on the car. Alonso has a pretty definitive case of Fisichellitis, but unlike Schumacher (who was similarly exposed in 1999 when Irvine, in a very easy to drive Ferrari, was very close to him in the championship before he broke his legs), his natural pace is not that good. What carries the likes of him and Ricciardo is his ability to adapt and make cars with issues work, but he's easily beaten by Vettel and Hamilton in a tier 1 car.
>>
>Alonso from last year is going to outscore Kimi from this year
>F14 T was arguably the 6th best car that year. Closer to the Toro Rosso than the Force India
>SF15-T is easily the second best car and depending on the circuit can equal the Mercedes

I think this demonstrates more how utterly shit Kimi is.
>>
>>63312115
McLaren are very, very lucky to score the points that they did.

>6th best car that year
Outside of Bahrain, the car was pretty okay in the first half despite its race day issues.
>>
>>63311854
hakkinen didnt win as much as he would have because he was against schumacher.

its like being up against a team of michael jordans or something. youre lucky to even win one championship
>>
>>63312170
He probably could've won more races, but he had shit luck in 1997 and no motivation after his horror crash early in 2001. 1999 was also down to Ferrari easily having the best car in the second half of the season.
>>
>>63311758
I have no problem with this. Mika spent 5 years of his career in a non-championship winning car, and retired after less than 10 years in F1.

Raikkonen was one of the best on the grid 2002-2008, was pretty good when he came back and bad since he 2014. I'll still cheer for him but I'm not blind to reality.

>>63311854
Hakkinen is not overrated. Schumacher considered him a driver that posed a serious challenge to him. If Hakkinen is overrated, Schumacher is overrated.

>>63311973
I don't know if I'd say his natural talent eclipses all other drivers. Jim Clark, Senna and MSC are all easily arguable cases for that.

As for your point about Alonso/Ricciardo, I agree with you that it is their adaptability which makes them so highly rated, arguably very justifiably. While I agree that Vettel and possibly Lewis (hard to tell since the only stat you can reference is 2007, which was 5-4 in quali to Lewis, in his rookie year) would beat Fernando/Ricciardo over one lap, I don't know if they would over a race distance. Their adaptability (see: Alonso, Schumacher, Prost) tends to make them better racers overall.
>>
>>63312234
MSC wasn't really overly talented. You're underestimating the insanity of his work ethic. Senna is up there in that regard too, probably one of the first of his kind, while Clark is overrated in general.
>>
>>63312269
I'm saying MSC could certainly be argued to have that much talent. He was overly talented. The reason he was so successful was his combination of the work ethic and raw talent.

He immediately possessed all the characteristics of a world champion, and that's down to talent.

But as you say, it was his incredible work-rate a drive that made him as successful as he was. I'd argue that Alesi could be considered one of the most talented F1 drivers of all time but he didn't have the drive to perfect himself and rally his team around him. He tried hard, no doubt, but he didn't try MSC hard.

I don't think Clark is overrated in general.

>Renault personnel have already started to integrate themselves back at Enstone ahead of the return of its works team to Formula 1 next season,Autosportcan reveal.
Autosportcan also confirm that afterresigning a fortnight ago from his technical consultant rolewith Manor, Bob Bell is set for an imminent return to Renault as its planned takeover of Lotus continues

and they're going to stick with palmer as a renault works driver? fucking hell. it'd better be for 2016 only.
>>
>>63318566
So, if renault returns next year already, Mercedes surely doesn't want them to have access to their engine? As Lotus still has a Mercedes contract for 2016. So Lotus(Renault) back to Renault engines and Red Bull gets the Mercedes units? Come on Lauda, make it happen!

mercedes are supplying manor, so it's renault or nothing for lotus/renault. mercedes will likely say we are supplying 3 teams, which is enough.

lauda will apparently leave mercedes as he fell out with wolff about supplying red bull - lauda wanted it, wolff didn't.
>>
>>63318628
>Lauda's reportedly on his way out, remember?
Because he wants to supply Red Bull, but Toto doesn't..
>>
>>63318566
If Renault are taking 2016 as a year to build and consolidate a 'new' team then they probably see drivers as unimportant (see Honda), with a plan to replace them both in 2017 with some more competitive ones. Of course, being Renault, it's entirely possible they have no idea what the fuck they're doing.

It's true. Lewis is not a ruthless competitor that, for example:
-Insists that the contracts of himself and his teammate explicitly reflect that he is #1 driver
-Runs into competitors on track on purpose to disable their cars and grant him the win
-Parks his car during qualifying to prevent further times to be set

To be fair, Hamilton's only competition for all his championships has been his own teammate and he's mentally stronger than Rosberg. But it's not written into his contract that he gets #1 treatment. He just drives better than his teammate, fair and square.

But his consistency seems to have cost him his speed as he hasn't had a great single outstanding performance this year like he had in previous ones. Grosjean got that podium.

Also lets be fair to Grosjean he is mostly liked over Pastor by the majority of people because he doesn't look like an axe wielding murderer. He also has such a nice attitude and the way he talks about his family and his beautiful, hot yet homely wife is endearing. You can't really use that as an argument as no one outside of FOM has ever received full radio transcripts from any race, ever. I have no problem with people loving Senna. I love Senna. But people act as though he's the indisputable GOAT or choose to ignore certain parts of his career.

I also hate people that dislike him purely for this, or claim he's only rated because he was killed. He would be remembered just as fondly as he is today, and would probably hold way more records than he does. Just not by as many people and especially not by as many casual F1 fans who have never seen Senna actually in a race.

If you list out instances of team orders actually used on track, you'll find Austria '98, France '99, and Austria 2001-'02.

How does 4 team decisions over a period of 5 seasons scream 'explicitly stated Number 1'?

The fact is, none of Schumacher's team mates had the pace to match him regularly, which is why they were usually behind. A number 1 - number 2 explicit contract was unnecessary.
>>
>>63321897
Surely you realize #1 status is about more than a few team order incidents.
>>
>>63321897
Apparently, one of the reasons why Schumacher's teammates looked so weak was because the car was built to Schumacher's liking and his teammates had a hard time adjusting to that.
>>
>>63321959
>>63322044
You're both right but there was a reason why MSC was positioned as a No. 1 in those teams.
>>
>>63321959
But the rest is not demonstrable 'out on the track', which is what the Brit said. For the rest, there is no indication of a Number 1/2 scenario, since no contract clauses are known.

It can't be both explicit and 'visible on track', yet have no supporting evidence at the same time, either contractually or on track.
>>
>>63322044
But if the other driver had the ability to be as quick and as consistent as Schumacher, then why would any sane team create a Number1/2 dynamic anyway? Would it not be in their best interests to have 2 competitive drivers instead of 1?

>>63322116
Essentially this.

>If you list out instances of team orders actually used on track, you'll find Austria '98, France '99, and Austria 2001-'02.

>Would it not be in their best interests to have 2 competitive drivers instead of 1?
There is evidence that having 2 evenly matched drivers can be detrimental. For example, if Mclaren had Hamilton (or Alonso) plus Kovalainen for 2007 they would have got the WDC.
>>
>>63322196
Your point about No.1 and No. 2 drivers isn't correct. For a team interested in taking the WDC as opposed to the WCC (in a non-dominant car) it is not a bad move. See Williams '86. In a non-dominant car, to win a WDC, one driver has to be better than the other. Otherwise, the wins that that car would theoretically get would be split between two drivers. Another team who either favored one driver or who had one driver vastly better than the other (see Ham/Kovalainen) will get the same amount of wins as the other team got with two drivers all with one driver = more points. Otherwise it's a dominant car.

Ferrari and Benetton completely backed Schumacher, but that doesn't mean the other guy didn't have a chance. As you say, there weren't an overt amount of direct orders to make it otherwise. These teams saw how good he was (both on track and off) and knew to back him, which slightly disadvantaged his teamates. But if they had been good enough and mounted a real challenge it would be interesting to see what happened.
>>
>>63322383
>It was his team because he was faster
And he took key Benetton staff with him when he joined Ferrari. Ferrari were nowhere at that point.
>>
>>63322461
But do you not think that Ferrari chose to bring him and all his team members from Benetton because he was fast and good at building the team/ developing the car?

If another driver had come in and challenged Schumacher every race weekend and Ferrari put team orders into place to ensure he won, then you could make an argument that he only won due to No.1 status. But that wasn't the case and for the most infamous case of team orders, Austria 2002, he had won 4/5 races that year while Reubens had won none (which made it entirely unnecessary but that's not the point here.) If it was 2 wins each at that point then there would be a case.
>>
>>63322461
>And he took key Benetton staff with him
And they went because they wanted to work with the best. Rory Byrne explicitly said that he put off retirement because he got the chance to work with Michael again.

>>63322410
>>63322457
I'm well aware of '86 and 2007. The point being that the team would naturally back the faster driver, because it doesn't make logical sense in backing the slower one.

If any of Schumacher's team mates had anywhere near the same ability, would they not have shown it on track?

There's simply no evidence for a Number 1 dynamic, other than Schumacher being quicker on track, despite the fact that none of his team mates ever showed world-beating pace elsewhere either.
>>
>>63322598
>If any of Schumacher's team mates had anywhere near the same ability, would they not have shown it on track?
And if they weren't allowed to show it?
>>
If there wasn't #1 status then why were team orders ever done even if it happened "only a few times"? They don't make sense without that clause.
>>
>>63322598
I don't think anyone is arguing that he had an "undisputed No.1 status" within the team. Even if he did we'll never know because that situation never happened.

He was No.1 because he won more often than not. Just the fact that these team orders happened at all is evidence of him having a No.1 status within the team. An earned status, but one nonetheless. The team knew he was ahead in the points table and favored him over the other driver to achieve their seasonal goal. . Rubens showed that he could be faster than MSC on track in Austria '02, but Michael still won. That's No.1 status

Yes, but when such occasions are few and far between, it makes sense to favor the stronger driver.

I'm not arguing he wasn't Number 1. Just to be clear, I'm arguing that his successes and championships aren't, because he was a faster driver in the long run of a season. He was number 1 because he was faster, not because he was contracted to be.

worst wdc is graham hill. only won 1962 because clark's lotus had shit reliability and won 1968 because clark died.

plus he was effectively a murderer. shouldn't have flown that plane, which he knew, and he did not have a current license.

It was only amateur level rallycross, never that serious, but it was quite good fun.

We were cycling on a bike trail, she was to the right of me and the guy just came around the crest straight into the back of us. Next thing I remember is that I was in a hospital two days later. The driver fled the scene and the found him a few days later dead from a overdose.

I don't really know how to even process it, which is why I haven't, but sometimes at night I dream about killing him.

Worst WDC is actually Jenson MR OVERRATED Button.

Who only won because he was racing Barrichello for half the season. Once the other cars became more competitive he barely managed to win the championship.

I can't stand it when Sky talk about Button as if he is some accomplished driver, he is not, he is a midfield driver that got extremely lucky one season. Rosberg is better than him.
>>
>>63346157
>Rosberg is better than him.
'no'
at least Butt-on manged to beat Hamilton, even over the course of a season
>>
Worst WDC is Keke.
Pironi should have win in 82 without that crash with prost.
>>
>>63346137
I like Button but his championship was the worst
>>
>>63346157
>Who only won because he was racing Barrichello for half the season
Said Barrichello driving better than him more often than not but being crippled by his car. Seriously, Brawn GP cost Rubens 20 points (back when that was a thing) at least that season.
>>
>>63346157
Jense did have the slight advantage over Hamilton though during the time they had at McLaren together, so he has some good skill in him.
>>
>expand track, giving a 20 meter runoff around the turns
>penalize drivers for "abusing limits" (with major inconsistency) when they take advantage of it
Is there any worse cancer in modern F1? Just put back the gravel and grass if you don't want drivers using it. It's not fucking hard. The massive runoffs everywhere also look ridiculous.

Because Schumacher challenged for titles when the car wasn't the best in the field (see '97-'98) and won races when it was significantly slower than the best car ('96).

Even Irvine himself has stated that he was never capable of what Schumacher managed in '96. Apparently, that Ferrari handled like a turd, and was extremely unpredictable in its handling, and the fact that Schumacher got 4 poles and 3 wins in that car blew him away.

Honestly bothers me that Mercedes literally cannot fucking lose under normal circumstances

Honestly bothers me that there will be so many good drivers that just fly under the radar cause of their shit cars and never end up in top teams

Honestly bothers me that there are only 3 or 4 good tracks on the calendar

Honestly bothers me that Checo didn't do as well in Mexico
