>mathfags invent the idea of sets
>mathfags realize that their idea of sets allows for paradoxes
>mathfags adjust their conception of sets, then formalize a consistent set of axioms for them
>mathfags then use "classes" to do the exact same things they did with the naive conception of sets, even though they know that this leads to inconsistencies

How old were you when you realized that math is a fucking joke?
>>
>>7233246
And then based Grothendieck said, "fuck it, every universe is strictly contained by some larger universe. Now shut up and do some real math." I suggest you take the last sentence to heart.
>>
>>7233246
Just so old as your mother was when I banged her first.
>>
It's not just having groups of sets that leads to inconsistencies, it's calling those groups "sets." Changing the name is all that needed to happen

>I don't understand math it's stupid

>>7233246
>mathfags invent the idea of numbers
>mathfags realize the square root of negative numbers doesn't exist
>mathfags then use "imaginary numbers" to do the exact same thing that didn't exist

How old were you when you realized that math is a fucking joke?

>come up with idea
>idea breaks down under examination
>rename idea
>rigorously define something else
>claim old idea has been shown to be consistent when correctly axiomatized

>mathfags invent the idea of triangles
>mathfags realize that squares arent triangles
>mathfags then use "triangulation" to do the exact same thing they couldn't do, even though they know things aren't triangles

How old were you when you realized that math is a fucking joke?

>>7233289
>mathfags invent the idea of decimal numbers
>mathfags realize that some numbers aren't of the form a/b
>mathfags then stop using reason and use "irrational" and "infinite" numbers that don't exist to keep doing what they want to do even though they don't exist

How old were you when you realized that math is a fucking joke?

>mathfags invent the idea of probability
>mathfags realize that some spaces can't be measured
>mathfags adjust their preconception of probability, then formalize a consistent set of axioms for it
>mathfags then use "algebraic closures" to do the exact same things they did with the naive conception of probability, even thought they know that this leads to inconsistencies

just non-integers

>mathfags come up with certain rules for making deductions
>mathfags realize that these rules don't always depend on eachother
>they invent "formal systems" and "theories" with an axiomatuc basis
>they realize that any sufficiently-powerful formal system will have inconsistencies

How old were you when you realized that math is a fucking joke?
>>
>mathfags invect the idea of sets
>mathfags realize that their idea of sets allows for one to be unable to find an element in the set
>mathfags adjust their conceptions of sets, and introduce an axiom that says they can do what they want to do

>mathfags invent "topology" to study systems that are hard to model algebraically

This is probably one of the worst threads on sci in a while.

>mathfags invent the idea of 0

every other implying was good, yours is trash holy shit

Past PDE and complex variables (pencil and paper math), I have to agree with OP. Remember, all of practical math fits into Mary Boas' Math Methods book.

My friend quit his PhD because he realized his thesis subject was ultimately worthless.
>>
>>7233425
People don't study math because they think it is going to be useful or recognized or valuable; it's basically maymay-tier knowledge now that mathematicians do research because it interests them. I only study math because it makes me stupidly happy.
>>
>>7233438

And like much maymay-tier knowledge, that's crap.

Speak for yourself.

"One of Newton's greatest critics was George Berkeley (1685-1753), the dean of the Church of England in Ireland.[7, p.333] He was a vehement and highly competent critic of many aspect's of Newtonian science and sought to show that Newton's universe was constructed on quicksand. [4, p.210] Berkeley's main attack can be found in a publication entitled The Analyst. He hit the method of fluxions in its weak spot - the infinitesimals, which he called "the ghosts of departed quantities."[7, p.333] He said "He who is willing to accept the mysteries of the calculus, which nevertheless lead to true results, need not hesitate to accept the mysteries of religion" [7, p.333 as quoted in The Analyst]."

Of course they aren't division by 0 you dolt, that's the point of a gross oversimplification. Newton was actually criticized over the fact that calculus was effectively based on what looked like division by 0.
