The first part has already been cracked, and I used the information in the decrypted part to crack the last line that has been assumed to be gibberish, but it's not. It's the next lead, you guys. It's real.

Could be a surveying/map code of some sort? At my work we use a set of maps which covers an entire Canadian province. These are coded according to a grid, where each map is given an alphanumeric identifier and covers an area the size of a few city blocks. (Probably longitude/latitude based, now that I think about it.) Does anyone in California/this area have similar things? State land office? Utilities?

I don't think he did it to look "pretty", he was organizing it. When a letter is written on a grid, you don't have to read it left to right, you can read it vertically or in a spiral going around the page.

It would make someone decipher the first line accurately, then disregard the rest as they moved to the second line. It would make people give up or assume they were wrong.

It's interesting that you don't know much at all about the case. I think this can be beneficial in decoding since you are less likely to very biased. Every internet expert on the subject has their personal person of interest and manipulates information consciously and unconsciously to fit their POI.

However, there is a ton of valuable information about the case you are unaware of that could help solve your "VWYP" problem.

You may want to go on some of the sites' forums and read some code theories, Mt. Diablo threads, etc.

The message was decrypted. The result was a coherent, relevant message describing an event around Blue Rock Springs. The 4 letters remaining, although decrypted, didn't make sense to me. Until I entered them into the geocode finder on that acronym website, and it took me directly to Tracy, which, as it turns out, was the scene of the crime he basically challenged SFPD to prevent.

I think you have more of a rule-bound, military/privacy-oriented outlook on this, anon. These Zodiac ciphers aren't secrets, they're just riddles with several unrelated steps, which is why amateurs solved it before any expert could. They didn't have that creative spark. The thing about matrix encoding is it has to be done with a specific interval of character length (ie, divisible by some reasonable integer). If this is how the original block was decoded, there very well be 0 meaning to the final characters, which would be why you can't find meaning to it.

OP is saying that the last 18 letters are decrypted. VWYP is not encrypted, it's merely some way of identifying a location, in the same way that telling someone to meet you at Mcdonald's is. You could give them the coordinates, or you could use another way. In this case, Z is giving us an alternative method of coordinates, probably military related. The problem isn't what VWYP means- we already know it's coordinates to Tracy- the problem is, how does Google translate VWYP to Tracy? How does one go from VWYP to Tracy? Once we know this, OP will release their method and the decrypted message.

Assuming your previous cracking on the code was right, and you still end with VWYP, I find more logic to be bound to a "connect the dots" riddle, rather than pinpointing a location via coordinates. Z showed more interest in mason and symbolism, rather than military skills.

VWYP most likely refers to a point on the military grid reference system or MGRS. Its a 4 letter system used to find points on a map. Google probably uses this system in its mapping as well, hence the fact that it understands the 4 letter coordinates.

There is no geocode dictionary where you can automatically select the "next best thing". Entering VWYP doesn't "redirect" you to VWUP or vice versa. Every map will be different when designating highways that way. Even if that were the case, and even if this is a true lead, Zodiac could have been using an entirely different map. You may be on to something, though, if it is found that there is some sort of connection. Alignment could be a key, but you can't go off how a certain map designates the highway.

I found the complete wheel thru a ZK forum here:

As you can see, the wheel has 12 sections (much like the zodiac has 12 signs)
And we already know that ZK killed "by knife", "by rope" = strangulation, "by gun" and "by water (at least 3 killings were at lake sites).

He wrote in oneof the later letters that cops were getting too close and that he would from then on mask his killings like accidents. Pretty sure there were victims" by fire" etc still waiting to be confirmed.

Through some other forums, they also mentioned about an ad (Red Ryder gun) within the comic that had a symbol on the cow (in the picture, far right) that he used in a similar way on one of his 1970 cards.

I don't think he was going by the comic's wheel in detail or anything like that. He just added his own twist to each thing, such as using "You are doomed" (Lady Doom), signing off ass the Red Phantom (the Red Mask), comic #28 declared "Be the master, not the slave". I think he just drew inspiration from comics, associating with the villains.

Which is where some draw the connection between him and a Batman comic from the 60s by one witness saying he was wearing a hooded mask, such as the one seen in the comic as the Hooded Hangman.

But regardless what connections we can come up with between the comics and the Zodiac, I just wish OP would come back and fill us in on what he has decoded. I've been keeping this thread open in a tab since the other night, waiting to see a new update...but nothing.

If you draw a straight line with starting point at Mount Diablo, and through (VW) Vaqueros Watershed (today V. Reservoir), you continue that line to Tracy and it goes straight to the Egal lakes.

The lengths some people have gone through all these years to find meaning in all of these clues are just astounding. The Zodiac Killer wasn't some kind of super genius that used every piece of knowledge in the known universe to hide himself. Whatever it takes to crack these clues is probably something simple that someone just hasn't thought of yet, and is being ignored because people are too busy crafting their own wacky theories that are even more insane than the killer's puzzles. Either that or he made a simple mistake or left out an important piece of information that's keeping people from going further.

Well, Anon, that's where you are wrong, the 340 cipher is like a cipher within a cipher within a cipher and reference dots that perfectly place important locations.

He probably did intentionally partition the cipher so you need a different cipher per to solve different parts of the letter. It actually makes sense.
