Opinions on tabby's star? I honestly don't think we wil absolutely know for a while but there are many theories and all of them can't explain the stars behavior correctly.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but this has to be the most mysterious star we have studied.

The observable universe is fucking massive. So massive we can't even imagine the colossal scales involved. There has to be a more mysterious star out there but so far this is the one that has all the talk recently.

acute doses of x-ray/gamma radiation below like 10 mSv are not harmful at all. It was shown from the atomic bomb blasts(acute dose of x-ray radiation you'd get just like a CT scan or x-ray) to not be harmful. all doses under 5 mSv had zero excess cancers compared to regular populations not exposed.

it was shown last year that in old people, CT scans of the chest below 7.5 mSv had no detectable DNA damage

it was shown in another study that the LOWEST average dose for a solid cancer was like 35 mSv, much higher than any CT scan. most CT scans are of the head(angled away from the eyes), one of the least radio-sensitive parts of the body, at like 2 mSv or less, not high enough to do jack shit even in an acute dose. we used to give adult doses to children in the 80s and 90s.

there is no way the doses you receive in a CT scan cause cancer. it has never ever been shown in decades it has been researched. it's harmful maybe if you're a small child and you're receiving a dozen scans in the same spot, but otherwise, there's no way

Explain to me in a convincing way why a 95% CI does not mean a 95% probability that one will draw a random sample with the population mean in it
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8592242

The real question is, why WOULD it mean that? Please explain what chain of logic lead you to this odd confusion.
>>
a CI of 95% means that if the null hypothhesis is true then 95% of the time a randomly drawn sample will have a sample mean in that interval.

So I can't explain to you why it is not the case because it IS the case
>>
>>8592251

If I have a sack of marbles with 95% white and 5%black marbles in them, there is a .95 probability that a random marble i will draw eill be a white one, right?

So if we have an infinite pool of samples, and we can say that 95% of these samples lie within a certain range of the population mean, why can't I say that a randomly drawn sample has a 95% chance to be within that range?

The top research universities get federal grants and patent research, leasing it for profit (not giving back the federal tax dollars).

In turn this makes the school rich and they can afford to handpick the best of the best with lucrative grant money.

In exchange the US gains "prestige" they can claim to have the 'best universities' because they are federally subsidizing them heavily, all countries do this too btw.

The only issue is the university admin then go around giving themselves too big salaries, for example there is countless Provost and Vice-Provost, Deans, Board of Directors and other admins at my university all making over $400k/year plus they live for free either on campus or with housing credits, and they are given free travel. A large majority of them are politically appointed, such as our President who was a fundraiser for a political party thus he in turn hires all party cronies and fills their high paying positions.

>How do you get to the stage where you can do this stuff?

I genuinely dont intend to hurt your feelings or intelligence. But i learned how to do this type of problem in maybe 9th-10th grade. Although i would not be confident enough to say i know it for certain until 2nd year at uni.
>>
>>8591556
To clarify, i did not understand the notation on the left at that grade, nor the inequality meaning in relation to the notation, but i would have been able to solve RHS at that age.
>>
>>8591550
The way the problem is solved is voluntary hookus-pookus. With tools like ln you could find it more easily.

Anybody with high school level of understanding of physics can you help me with these problems.

is at the top of a cliff that is 24.70 meters high. He throws a football at a speed of 13.72 m/s 38.96 degrees above the horizontal. The ball hits Mr. Caprio in the foot. Calculate the distance from the base of the cliff to Mr. Caprio.

A soccer player kicks the ball toward a goal that is 29.0 m in front of him. The ball leaves his foot at a speed of 19.3 m/s and an angle of 30.0° above the ground. Find the speed of the ball when the goalie catches it in front of the net.

Mr. Bononno throws an AED from the parking lot to Mrs. Dumansky, who is standing on the roof of a building. The AED is thrown at 37.5 m/s 73.3 degrees above the horizontal. The roof is 7.2 meters above the ground.
a. Calculate the time it takes the AED to reach Mrs. Dumansky so that she catches it at the edge of the roof after the AED already reached its maximum height. Hint: Use the GREATER of the two times.

s
b. Calculate the distance between Mr. Bononno and the base of the building.

m
c. At what velocity (magnitude and direction) does Mrs. Dumansky catch the AED?

m/s

degrees below the horizontal

Im honestly so lost

A man fires a .22 revolver directly up into the sky. How long will the bullet fall back to earth? Assume the bullet's path of trajectory is free of all forces besides gravity and initial launch.
>>
>>8591247
You have to split the vectors of the velocities into horizontal and vertical (using trigonometry). Then you determine how long it takes for the ball to hit the ground by taking gravity, vertical velocity and initial height into consideration. Then you take that time and multiply it to the horizontal speed to find the distance. Don't forget to keep your units the same (ie. Meters to meters, seconds to seconds instead of meters to inches and seconds to minutes).

What stops us from being able to see SUSY particles if we are able to see standard particles just fine?

As far as my understanding goes we are completely able to see standard particles. What is stopping us from seeing SUSY particles (being that they do exist?)? Is it an equation we have yet to discover? Or am I just completely misunderstanding Supersymmetry?
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>8591182
The only possible SUSY models that are left are high energy SUSY models. i.e. The SUSY isn't noticeable until you reach high energies

Such energies are not yet reachable by the LHC and thus can not yet be tested experimentally.
>>
>>8591189 How much energy is exactly needed to do that?

Well you see its rather quite elementary. THe standard particles actually exist but SUSY is just an idea someone came up with and those particles don't exist.
