Can someone explain to me exactly why the Mean Value Theorem is important? I understand it's used in the proof of FTC and has a few other applications; but is that it?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.

What sort of answer are you looking for?

You seem to know applications.
It's common for existence statements with simple condition to be relevant shortcuts. Like the fixed point theorems.

>has a few other applications; but is that it?
I don't understand your point. What else do you want? Do you wish for it to keep your beer cold? Like seriously, what else do you expect from a theorem other than using it in proofs for other theorems or for direct application, what else could there possibly be?

>tell myself I'll study applied maths for engineers and physicists (finished university already)
>suffer a collapse of motivation after period procrastination

I get instantly bored by rudimentary plug and chug but get extremely frustrated by my brainlet brain with "show that..." questions, where the answer always starts with "consider [the last thing you'd ever consider"]

What the hell do? What are the fun or useful parts of maths?

What are the 100 % barebones parts that you'd consider important? Is learning most maths important if I did well in high school?

So you got a degree, just not in science or engineering?

I don't know the answer. What you find fun/useful is a personal thing.

I got an engineering degree at a shit low standard university.

What is mass?

Higgs boson
>>
Energy divided by the square of the speed of light.

It is the physical property of an object to resist acceleration when there is an external force applied to it. It also determines its mutual gravitational attraction to other bodies of mass. Look up Mass-Energy for more information on the relativistic concept of mass.

Hello /sci/

brainlet here. I've been trying to figure out the probability of winning dice rolls in the game risk.

I have no stats background, but using psuedo-math I've figured out that the probability of the attacker winning with 1 dice vs 1 dice is 5/12 and for the attacker having 2 dice vs the defenders 1 the odds increase to 125/216?

Can anybody help?

To break it down, for ferromagnets the free energy is the lowest in state where spins of some electrons align in the same direction. There is also paramagnetism, ferrimagnetism, antiferromagnetism and diamagnetism but this is left as an exercise for the reader.

Title really says it all.

I want to become a NukeE. I've always though power plant design and operation was interesting, and other areas of the nuclear industry such as safety specialists are all interesting to me. If I wanted to double major, what would /sci/ recommend? I'm first year right now and am willing to do five years of studying, so I have some time to reflect and think.

You should probably just Bs in Physics or EE and go to grad school for Nuke
>>
>>8603310

Don't be an idiot. Be single major.
Virtually no career requires a double major.
Double major is stressful, and takes all of your time to pass the courses.

Just do EE. Interesting, challenging, and employable.

Does /sci/ buy international editions of textbooks?

One of my major courses requires a book that costs $320 USED. International edition costs $24 with free shipping.

I'm hesitant to buy the international edition, as it might be slightly different and have different information or may be missing some chapters.

Do any of you guys have any experience buying them as opposed to the real editions?

>>

Pst. Pro-tips.

1. If you really need the book, go to the library, take out your phone, take a bunch of snapshots, and then study digitally on your iPad or whatever.
2. You don't need the book 99% of the time. Study your notes and maybe take a voice recording of the professor if that helps.
>>
>>8602828
I'll need it later down the road, plus once I'm out of college.

I don't mind shelling out $24 on a book, just not $320

Tell me more about x-ray crystallography, /sci/. I hear integral membrane proteins are quite a challenge.
51 posts and 4 images submitted.

Nice resolution.

Yes, they are very difficult to express, purify, and crystallize.
>>
For some reason it's much harder to get E. coli to express membrane proteins than any other type, at least in any meaningful amount, without killing the cell.

Purification and crystallization are also tough because, since it's a membrane protein, correct conformation often depends on the presence of a lipid bilayer for the transmembrane domains. If you don't have that layer, you might not fold the protein correctly, which means any structure you crystallize might be just plain wrong.

Usually people get around this by expressing just the free domains of a protein, but this again has its issues. You don't know that the protein folded correctly without the transmembrane domain. Also, if your protein has a multi-pass structure and the tertiary structure depends on the loops between passes being present, again, you might not fold correctly.

We've run into this problem a lot in our lab because the membrane protein we're interested has a good deal of sequence similarity to bacterial histidine kinases, so we think it might actually be functionally active in E. coli in a way that kills the cell.

Thats like one of the common lame excuses for laziness

i want to study surveying.. anyone here studying surveying? or know any good resources online?

I'm in the same boat with you anon, well kinda. I wanna do something with engineering, geography and traveling.
I don't know how it is there but here you can become a survey tech right out of high school and pretty much work your way up to survey manager which is practically civil engineering (I think, that's what i've heard)
Have you taken any classes on Geomatics or any other survey related fields?
>>
>>8606860
I'm a geology major myself so we do work some in GIS and Geomatics. That would be my suggestion. We have an entire Geomatics department at my university. Surely a degree there would qualify someone for surveying.
>>
>>8606860
here you have to have atleast 2-3 yrs study to became a technician or a 4 year bachelor to be a surveyor plus i think 2yrs for license.. i think.

i have not taken any classes yet, but im planning on studying to became a tech in February.

A swinging pendulum, such as the one shown in the image below, rotates about a vertical axis once every 24 hours because

of Earth's rotation about its axis.

Earth's axis is parallel to its ecliptic.

of Earth's orbit around the Sun.

Earth's equator is moving faster than the poles.

Because of the Earth's rotation about it's axis, correct?

>Earth's axis is parallel to its ecliptic
Do you mean to say 'Earth's axis is perpendicular to the equator'?
>>
>>8606748
It's the way that answer is worded. I dislike these kind of questions because I feel it could have two or more answers... This is for a "physical geology" course by the way.

How do I measure mach angle on a humanoid sized object? From the center (the waist) or from the edges of the object (head & feet)?

Also, how do I use mach angle to determine the objects mach number?

This is not homework btw.

ok I actually found a resource for finding the mach number via mach angle.

Now I just need to know how to properly measure mach angle on an rectangular object.
