Prove that you exist, and that the universe is changing by using least possible amount of observational evidence.

Let's see what we come up with.

You can express a line in 2D with one equation. However, to express a line in 3D you need THREE equations. Why does the amount of equations go +2 instead of +1?

can you give an example for what yluean be equation incthose dimensions?

{(x,y,z) | y=0 and z=0}

specifies a line in 3 dim

You don't need three.

Each point on the bottom line is .2491 units below the top line.

Sorry let me reword that.

Every point on the top line is 0.2491 units above an adjacent point on the bottom line.

so i want to start from scratch.
basically i have never taken a college level class in any sort of physics, but i am extremely interested in learning it and i have the drive and motivation. also i want to be a nuclear technician in the Navy. before any of that happens though i would like to get ahead of everyone else, the first problem is, i dont know where to heck to start, so my question is, what are some great books for people just getting into the field! what books best helped you?

Go to school?
>>
>>8626513
To better understand physics, then you should shoot for a basic understanding of algebra and calculus.

/sci/ has already compiled everything you need to know to understand Physics auto-didactically.
>>
>>8626533
well the navy is going to provide me with the schooling, i want to learn it on my own, iv started with "physics for dummies" right now, but it would be nice if i could have some other suggestions

>>8626536
i think i have an okay understanding of algebra perhaps calculus would be a good path to start as well though.

Do any animals besides humans have culture?

Do any animals besides humans transmit knowledge through generations?

I was thinking that perhaps the definite difference between us and other life forms would be our ability to transmit information with mechanisms other than DNA.

Answering these questions could strenghten or destroy such hypothesis.

Please tell me if there are such cases in nature.

>>
>>8626400
Culture? Perhaps.
Social structure is apparant in wolves, lions, ...
This is LEARNED behaviour (= knowledge)
Therefor, your hypothesis is destroyed.

Absolutely. Some high class Japanese monkeys season their potatoes in salt water before eating.

But still, you are right. That is a unique ability that very few species take part in.

What a poorly written book. Once he got to the part about the Michelson Morley experiment I got totally raped in the mind. It's worded so densely I can't even follow what he's saying. I'm not a science denier, I think science is the closest thing to honesty and objectivity we have in the world, and that it's values can derive higher human values in general; I just wish I had a better avenue of exploring these sorts of things, I'd love to understand the Michelson Morley experiment, and all the other stuff written about in A Brief History of Time. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the avenue to go. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

That book is as close to pure shit as you can get. The experiment is very easy to understand.

Say you have to sailboats with both sails and engines, and there is a wind in a certain direction.
Now, you orient one sailboat to sail at about 45º from the other, both racing to reach the same distance from their starts. Because of the sails catching the wind, one will inevitably reach the finish line earlier than the other, since they sailed in 2 different directions with respect to the wind.
If there was no wind, then they would reach the finish line at the same time.

Now in the late 80s, scientists thought that there was a medium called aether, just like an atmosphere is the medium where wind exists. This was the medium where light waves were supposed to be carried.
Because the earth is moving very fast, that movement should create a wind in the aether. Therefore, if you replicate the sailboat experiment with two beams of light, or rather with one beam that is split and then recombined, if there was wind then one beam would reach the detector earlier.

Because both beams reached the detector at the same time, they proved there was no aether (because there was no wind) and that light could travel in a vacuum.

But seriously don't read that piece of shit book.

Michelson Morley was a dud, wrong premises, wrong apparatus, wrong conclusion.

As a whole hawking-show, it's no better then medieval divinator-monsters :

What are the effects of 900 mg of lithium carbonate use over a period of 1.5 years on the kidney and heart?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Depends on physiology of person and rate of intake (constant, bursts over certain timeframes, ..)

But I don't know alot about that shit. Wiki says to float between 0.4-0.8 mM/L range.
So, you've got 0.01218 M Li2CO3, which is like 12,18 mM of that shit to spread out over 1.5 years. I'd say minimal to no effects, probably won't even feel any effects.

I'm a fit guy who exercises everyday
>>
>>8626405
wait, is that 900mg per dosage or 900mg total to sprad out?
Because if we're talking 900mg total it's peanuts, but if it's 900 mg / dosage, I'd say spread that shit out over the entire week.
Also: why take Lithium?

why don't they just use normal guns in star wars? the energy weapons are slow enough to be blocked by lightsabers.

It's constantly tilted in the same direction, as shown in your picture, hence the seasons. There's some drift over hundreds and thousands of years.

/sci/, if I know high school maths well enough and I want to self study more maths, where is the best place to start? I did some maths at university but have forgotten all of it. I'm not sure if my university offered a good curriculum anyway

I am never satisfied with anything. Doing calculation questions is boring as fuck. Doing "Show that..." questions usually rely on some result pages back and make me wonder what the point was after I inevitably fail to get it. Doing actual rigorous stuff is probably pointless and boring and would eventually feel crushingly pointless.

Ultimately I feel so damn lost when every single sub-topic has multiple textbooks of its own.
