is it worth the $6000?
21 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
No. If you had $6000 to spare you'd be going to Yale or similar anyway and the summer camp would mean jack shit. If you don't have $6000 to spare then it's obviously not worth it.

I can see it as being cool if you're a richfag from Japan going to Waseda or a Brit going to Oxbridge, to get to know the Ivy League.

So why does the horribly outdated lecture model still exist? In fact, why did it ever exist? Most of what you learn can be better learned from books, or in our age videos on the subject are posted on youtube, vimeo, etc. I just dont see the point of a professor regurgitating the same stuff every year with little variation, uploading only part of the notes to force students to attend lectures. Im thankful for the few profs that realize this and upload their lectures online. So lets talk about advantages and disadvantages to lectures:

Disadvantages
>Have to commute to school, this sometimes takes hours for some people (1.5 hours for me, 3 hours in total a day are wasted because some cuck professor wont just upload the notes).
>Have to take redundant notes, the same notes that hundreds of other people around you are taking, as well as thousands of students that took the course in previous terms, its also sometimes difficult to take meaningful notes if information is flowing fast.
>Have to sit in uncomfortable chairs and tables, with stagnant air, dealing with the typical bullshit (people talking during lectures, asking questions, making annoying noises, prof doesnt know how to turn off lights, chalk running out, strong cologne from some arab fag, etc.).
>Lecture is live, meaning that its not perfect, a video/book can be recorded perfectly whereas a lecture will contain errors and the prof cant fix them.
>Since lecture is live, if you miss a certain key point then it has a snowballing effect where you cant understand anything that builds off of it afterwards.

Advantages
>Business mindset, youre at school and its a different mindset from being at home, If you lack discipline then a lecture could help you focus
Cant think of anything else really, they seem inferior in almost every way

Seriously why do lectures still exist? Many professors hold onto them with all their might so that they can justify their worthless existence.

>Seriously why do lectures still exist?

So they can "justify" the cost of higher education.
>>
>>8622101
Yup exactly what I thought. Im surprised more people arent talking about this though.

Certain courses have costs other than the prof, such as cost of tools for a lab, but you can easily drop a huge portion of the cost just by getting rid of these stagnant leeches that teach the same shit every year.
>>
intellectual property. Colleges feed professor and professor do things that will in turn make colleges rich. College is like bank that makes money by not doing anything. And professors, or whatever that means, is living the American dream by doing work just for the purpose of working.

Engineering is no science.

Why is engineering often considered to be/lumped together with proper science fields?

Engineering is obviously not about understanding nature/the world around us. We just build stuff and hope it holds up. If anything. we just do some hand-wavy "proof" or calculations.
There is usually no scientific regiour involved.

Most engineering work is more of "creative contemplation" not unlike design or arts. (Analytical) Philosophy is obviously more "scientific" than engineering.

tl;dr: Why is Engineering considered science? Just using math doesn't make it sicence.

Are there any forms of therapy that dont recommend embracing fetishes?

Even with a nice and attractive partner its only made me feel worse. Ive tried acceptance and it doesnt work for me, what else can i try? Is there good OTC ways to kill sex drive?
26 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Why would you want to do that and why do you think that oppressing yourself further would solve anything or even make you feel better? Are your fetishes harmful towards yourself or third parties?
>>
>>8627258
I'm not sure it'd help but i just can't stand myself because of it. I've tried years of therapy, telling myself it's for the best, reminding myself it's not a choice and engaging in it with a loved one who was into it. None of it works. I love doing that stuff but i just hate myself, often much more, after doing kinky things but even sometimes during. I'm just looking for anything right now because i've tried acceptance for years and it's painful. If it hasn't worked yet, and if this is the only path for people like me then i don't think i'll ever feel ok. It seems like i'm just hopelessly broken and constantly miserable, well not constantly but the enjoyment i get from embracing the kinks comes with worse misery afterward

Let's talk planets. So it looks like these little guys are far and few between but I'm more concerned with 2 likelihoods. I wanna know the probability that mankind will survive to develop hyperjump technology to visit these fuckers. Also, I wanna know the probability of there already being intelligent life on at least one of those 44 planety doohickies.

Feel free to math my shit up or use conceptualizations.

Pic is the top 10 planets that can, most likely, sustain human life. Distance from their Suns are in AU (astronomical units). Neato, huh?

You are on a game show and you have 3 identical doors.
Behind one door is a car.
Behind each of the other two is a goat.

You want to pick the door with the car but you don't know which one it is.

Once you pick a door, the host will flip a coin.
If you picked a car, the host will always ask if you want to switch.
If you picked a goat and the coin lands heads, the host will ask if you want to switch.
If you picked a goat and the coin lands tails, the host will simply reveal your goat and you lose.

So you picked a door and the host asks if you want to switch.

Should you switch?

How can I find polynomials a,b and c that satisfy a^2+b^2=c^2+1? I would like them to have rational coefficients and be of degree 2 or less. I would like to generate a lot of them if possible, and ideally have some formula that could potentially yield all of them.

If not for the 1 on the right hand side we could take a=2t, b=1-t^2 and c=1+t^2, but even then I don't know if that the only possibility modulo some unknown degree tweaking.

I've played around with coefficient equations, but just got a big mess. I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks /sci/

Especially given that it's supposed to be the same woman's hand, that hand is freakishly angular and large. Women have these little thin stubby hands, most of the time.

Initially I found your language confusing, believing that you were confusing polynomials themselves with numbers, and I was about to scold you about it, but your expansion sounds like you just want to plug in and square polynomials in your thing, and find a general family of solutions.

Polynomials can be tricky. There are such things as sparse polynomials, so for all I know, your thing is hard as well. Anyway I can't be fussed anymore, I was just caught by that woman's freakishly large alien-hand.
>>
a=2t, b=2t^2-1, c=2t^2 would be one family of solutions.

In this case I just looked at two consecutive squares (b^2 and c^2 in this case), and pondered what requirements are necessary for their difference to be one less than a square (a).

If you move to b and c having a difference of 2, you get:
a=2t+1, b=t^2+t-1, c=t^2+t+1

Thank you for your replies

a=2t, b=2t^2-1, c=2t^2

This is very nice, thank you! I wonder if this is the only such solution up to some fiddling. You could apply a generalized "orthogonal" transform, for example. See pic from
"Pythagorean Descent" by Keith Conrad.

It's frustrating poking around for help on the web. I find a reference that seems like it might be helpful, but they always seem to jump to advanced math topics which seem detached from any practical application.

Folks, I need help. I want to get a lil' bit of salicylic acid.
There are two options: Hydrolysis of aspirin, or extraction from this medication to treat warts I got.
The medication is a liquid mixture of lactic acid, salicylic acid and flexible collodion.
When I pour this medication in a glass of water, it forms this white thing. I think that's the collodion. How do I get the SA out?
