Is there an evolutionary reason behind smoking?
>>8635382
Yeah, not for humans though
>>8635399
This.
Organisms will do anything to stay alive and reproduce. Humans and animals fuck, and that makes sense.
But for example, Cannabis grows, waits to be eaten by a buffalo, who then passes out stoned, to be eaten by a vulture, which flies away and shits out the seeds to a well-fertilized environment somewhere else.
The common Marlboro, Nicotiana tabacum, also has the need to fill the world with its descendants. Hummingbirds love that shit and coincidentally, humans too. We just don't eat the plant obsessively and shit out the seeds.

Yes, it's a pathetic display of conformism and low resistance to very basic forms of peer pressure.

I gotta stop using cheat codes on this board. Or do my little brainlets need more handholding?
Hi /sci/ could the brain be simulated? I'll put an example.
Imagine you are one of that guys that crashes cars with dummy puppets to gather data about impact. could this be done with the brain inside the skull? I understand it cannot be done at a neuronal level as it woul be trillions of conexions, but I'm interested in simulating the brain as "a piece of meat" inside the skull and see how is it damaged.
>>8633277
sure why not
>>8633287
I don't have any idea about simulation, but I do know something about the brain, it's a pretty complex organ, that's why I assume you cannot simulate it at a neuronal level (without using supercomputers, and even so, I doubt) but maybe it could be possible if you just want to simulate the "brain mass" inside the skull.
>>8633277
Yeah, put a human brain into a crash test dummy.
Can someone explain why i shouldnt be touching my peepee?
>>8633251
its addictive and deactivates your brain for some time.
>>8633251
It's bad if it's done repeatedly
Try to keep it at a minimum, aka 2-3 times per week
>>8633256
This, don't cut it out completely, because you WILL go insane after a month. Do it 2-3 times a week, to light porn.

does it worsen anxiety?
does vision indeed get poorer the more you wear your specs?
Im Myopic but wearing glasses all the time makes me mentally fatigued, depressed and anxious but I cant watch tv properlyor browse the internet or read books or see distant stuff without it?

Is this life the only time we are conscious?
I'm just pondering, it's really weird how for billions of years we weren't now we are and can experience a part of this for a brief point in time, but if it happened once it can happen again right?
Is there a mechanical scientific reason that in millions or billions of years, or maybe in another universe our consciousness can come into being again?
>>8634350
I do not think so, the human mind is probably the most mysterious in the universe.
>>8634350
There is no clear definition of "you" so this question makes no sense. There is a particular pattern of atoms with memories that form a seemingly "continuous" identity. This pattern of atoms could exist again after the first is destroyed. Is that the same "you" as before? Is the you from one second ago the same as before just because you have a seemingly continuous train of memories? These are unanswerable mental masturbation questions that only obscure the reality, which is simply a jumble of atoms moving around.

And yet we allow mothers to kill their unborn children for convenience under the guise of 'bodily choice.'
Hello /sci/,
I "borrowed" this CD some time ago and thought it might be of interest to some of you.
This contains the entire data that the Japanese Antarctic research station took from 1957 to 2011 (Surface, Radiation, Temperature, Ozone, Atmosphere, etc.).
https://mega.nz/#!Y4lBHZBI!lqv81vyLMGo2SNw8Vjas1MmeJB2DaIKOXDCqJfhsUFY
Data isn't hard to parse, its just a bunch of normal txt files with a regular structure, so writing a parser shouldn't be too difficult.
Cheers.

OMG! i was just going to bed after a dam'n bad days trying to get a fucking big "enough" data set from Kaggle but here you are my hero with tf is this but beautiful data all that to make a fucking autistic presentation with a faggots with a fucking piece of shit called Ph.D
Thankssssss
how can i return that favour ?????
fucking words are clueless to express my gratitude to you jew
I'm only 20 years old and I have holes in my teeth, /sci/.
I haven't been doing a whole lot of drugs, it's mostly just been a decade or so of depression and apathy that caught up with me. I would be too depressed to eat more than a meal a day and things like brushing my teeth and other basic hygiene were hardly on my mind.
Obviously having holes in my teeth isn't ideal so I'd like to try to regenerate them on my own if it's at all possible. So far I've been researching things like the use of concentrated growth factor, stem cells embedded in three dimensional scaffolding, low intensity pulse ultrasound (LIPUS), laser regeneration, electric current regeneration, and all the various supplements and vitamins and all natural diets and all the anecdotal claims of this or that extreme diet change and so on.
I'd like to put together a treatment plan for myself that will work towards the restoration of the dentin and the enamel I've lost to tooth decay and to the drill and fill treatments I've already had. I've had two filling fall out so there's two large cavities as well as smaller ones that haven't been "drill 'n filled" yet. I'm assuming that even if there is merit in the potential of these treatments that I'd only be able to produce limited results being a hobbyist. So in an attempt to increase chances of getting results quickly I'm going to do a combination of these things
Does anyone have any experience with or knowledge of techniques and treatments used to regenerate teeth? Particularly regenerating the dentin and the enamel of existing, living teeth with cavities. If so, which ones are most promising and do you think it's possible for those techniques to be performed in a homebrew environment?
>>8633729
>cont.
I'm at the point where I'm willing to stick needles in myself and draw my own blood on the daily to concentrate growth factor or learn how to isolate and multiply my own stem cells for a therapy of my own conception involving application with a turkey baster. If I can get some nudges in the right direction it would save me a lot of time and money and blood and I'd appreciate it greatly.
>tl;dr
My teeth is all fucked up and now I'm looking at buying a centrifuge so I can making stimpaks out of my blood. Does anyone know of ways I can regenerate my teeth so I don't have to get them drill 'n filled again?
Obviously I'm taking care of my teeth like an obsessed little autistic boy now but I want to reverse the damage done if possible.
>>8633729
Dentist here.
One don't be fucking stupid.
Second go to mexico, prices for dental treatment are 1/3 or less than the ones in US and the quality of work is same.
Unless you are 13yo gypsy girl with the survival genes of a bear you wont grow secondary dentine no matter what you try.
Ive seen shit you would not believe, save time, money and brain cells.
>A rounded carbide burr FG 1/4 coupled to a high speed hand piece was used to access the dentine of the mouse superior molar teeth. Once the burr cut exposed the dentine, a 30G needle was used to penetrate the pulp. In order to protect the pulp from external contamination and stimulate dentine repair, the injury was capped either with ProRoot Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) (Maillfer Dentsply), or Kolspon (Fish Collage Type 1- Eucare Ltd) alone, or in association with 50nM BIO (SIGMA), 5μM CHIR99021 (SIGMA), or 50nM Tideglusib (SIGMA) dissolved and diluted in DMSO, in contact with the pulp. A layer of 3M Ketac-Cem Radiopaque was used as a capping material to seal the injured site.
Find someone crazy enough to do this with lithium (a more common and less expensive gsk3 inhibitor) and post results
free will probably doesn't exist. for you to have free will you'd need to be able to manipulate matter, i.e. applying an electric potential to your brain cells with that potential coming from nowhere/not being dependent or connected to anything in our material world.
if this sort of manipulation was dependent on our material world, it'd no longer be dependent on our "free will" only, thus making it a product of some other environmental influences.
what does /sci think
>its a free will doesnt exist episode
what if
quantum physics
o.O
>>8633021
yeah I'm not on here much, so please excuse any reposts
>>8633014
It depends how you define free will.
On one hand you can say people have free will as you have the choice to live life how you want within your biological constraints.
On the other hand you could argue that these biological constraints prevent free will as you can't just choose not to sleep or drink since your body will force you to at some point or you will die. However you can choose when you want to sleep and eat though.
It's a really subjective topic that is based on how you interpret free will.
>Direct imaging of four planets orbiting the star HR 8799 @ 129 light years away from Earth
How does /sci/ feel now that we are directly imaging planets? This is kind of a major deal isn't it?
how come the planets are so bright and huge?
>>8632544
the star's light is blocked out?
>>8632569
yes. to a distance well beyond where the possible rocky inner planets would possibly be observed. glare of many months/years at different angles and weather condiitons. From what i udnerstand every artificially dark/black area is to block the glare.
Will someone please redpill me on differential equations?

This man is a true genius and the most valuable Google engineer. He's like a God at Google and not even the CEO would go against him. He literally made Google what it is today and wrote/worked-on all of their most important software stacks. He's worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Now, notice something interesting:
He doesn't have two, three or four monitors and he doesn't have some gigantic TV screen that kills your focus and distracts him from everything important.
He doesn't have some bullshit meme mech keyboard with some special switches that were forged by elves in Japan from katana-grade steel and lights that emit perfect sRGB colors.
He doesn't have a mouse with refresh rate so high that it breaks spacetime continuum every time you slide it across your desk.
He doesn't have a $300 pair of audiophool grade headphones.
He doesn't have some super-expensive chair with all kinds of knobs and adjustments that can can even massage your prostate.
He doesn't have some tricked out text editor with million different features and colors.
He doesn't run some super-autistic Linux distro like Arch that demands you babysit it all the time.
He doesn't have some DE with customized CSS US that you usually see in tons of threads on here.
He didn't even change the default theme, colors or the default background.
He can afford all that shit, yet he doesn't waste his time on it. Instead, he writes 100x more lines of code than you and is 1,000,000x more accomplished than you'll ever be. And he's infinitely smarter than you'll ever be.
So quit falling for fucking memes and quit craving all the latest bullshit that gets posted on here in these cancerous consumerist "generals" threads that just make you feel inadequate. Just learn your craft and get better. What matters is what's in your head and how you express yourself and not what you have on your desk.
Now go do math!
