Can you even get a good education in engineering/science without going to MIT/Caltech?
also how many adderalls does it take to kill a 220 pound man?
on the second question, it varies, dropped from what height? Are they loose or packed in sacks?

No, op - the only degree in stem ever worth having is only from mit or caltech. There are no other schools in the universe that could possibly string together a program in such a way that it's meaningful. Not Stanford, GaTech, ut Austin, ucla, Berkeley, umichigan, random state school, etc, etc. Undergrad education totally hasn't been standardized and anyone who graduates from anything but #1 has no idea what they're doing.
What science or tech do you think seems close to a super power?

Since Oxygen is on the same column as Sulfur, Selenium, and all the smelliest chemicals, and elements in the same column share properties,
Is the reason we don't see aliens that our planet is so disgusting, and don't realize it?
>>8648163
No.
>>8648163

1. Ayylmaos may not even have a sense of smell. To assume extraterrestrials would have similar sensory organs to us is naive, their means of perceiving outside information may be completely different from our rather basic sight/sound/smell/taste/feel type. Or their own biology, or the environment they evolved in, may not have facilitated need for olfactory senses.
2. They may have a completely different biology, one that perhaps prospers in environments we would consider hostile. Also, our arbitrary notion of what is and isn't "disgusting" doesn't have to be shared by ayylmaos. So like I said above; no, it's unlikely.

you got the wrong table, op
I'm well educated, but I have diagnosed math dyslexia. I've struggled my whole life with math and I can hardly do my time tables without freezing and fucking up. Feels bad man. I'm smart in other subjects, but when It comes to math, I'm probably talented at a 4th grade level, if even that.
Does anybody have any recommendations on how I can get better at math? I'm too ashamed about it, and I just don't know what to do.
I'm willing to try. I had to drop out of college because I couldn't even pass the very first math prerequisite class, once I get to even division I just fuck up.
Is there even a way to override math completely in college? Is there some special permit I can get that pretty much qualifies me to void math all together? Or am I forever doomed to continue shelling out money because I keep failing basic math?
Sorry for the long loaded question, I'm just frustrated and I sometimes want to just end my life because I can't go anywhere in life without getting passed math courses in college.
>>8648065
Hmmm, have you tried reading a math text book?
>>8648065
>math dyslexia
what fucking bullshit is this?
>>8648068
I mean I don't really own any. My struggle with math a lot of the time was understanding and memorizing the steps needed for different equations and such. I switched schools 3 times, and each school had a different way of doing math, so every time I just ended up getting fucked and having to ditch what I learned to relearn, etc. I just don't have a fucking clue man. I know google is out there, but as a science and math board, I figure people here who are into science and math can lead me to the best possible direction of learning.

Do you agree it's a problem there are almost no females studying STEM fields?
How to make STEM more inclusive to women?
No, it's not a problem. We don't need diversity quotas for stem. If a man wants to do STEM, then good. He can enjoy his career and advance in his field. If he was replaced by a woman then...um...okay? What difference would it make?
Yes, it's a problem because it makes it harder for me to get a qt science gf.
No. I think people should do what they're interested in or else we are going to fuck up a naturally efficient process.
What is it about diamonds that makes them so much harder than every other metal? Sorry for noob question.
they are transparent and white and also they are made of geometric 2D shapes that make up a 3D shape (think of a polished diamond for example) thats why non polished diamonds like glass break up so easily.

its because diamonds can scratch metal but metal cant scratch diamonds

Prove to me, that space and time are not discrete, but continuous. What if the universe is discrete on a scale smaller than the Planck-scale? Any experiments?
>>8647825
I don't think that's provable but it's definitely a possibility considering the Planck constant exists.
>>8647833
And wouldnt you be able to measure the 'rounding errors' with enough measurements?
>>8647888
Not sure.
How the fuck can an osberver change the outcome of an experiment? I still can't wrap my mind about this.
Also does the wave function of a quantum particle represent something phyisical or is it just the mathematical model used to describe the "superposition" the quantum is in until it is measured?
>How the fuck can an osberver change the outcome of an experiment? I still can't wrap my mind about this.
He can't.
>Also does the wave function of a quantum particle represent something phyisical or is it just the mathematical model used to describe the "superposition" the quantum is in until it is measured?
It's a mathematical model
>>8647822
>he can't
so why does the wave function collapse when the particles are observed?
>>8647814
The concept of the electron being a particle is the product of a photon or other particle interacting with the superposition (represented by a wave function). Therefore, to an observer, the electron will always appear to be a particle. This is the observer effect. You see, the observer does not alter the system in any way, but it is the process of taking a measurement that makes the electron appear as a particle. The mathematical term for this is "wave function collapse".
You're right, the wave function is just our best mathematical model of the superposition, and you were right to put it in quotation marks because we have almost no idea what a superposition really is.
Honestly, quantum mechanics is just the science of human ignorance. It is a formalism made to describe that which cannot be observed.

My computer science professor was trying to be helpful and answered a bunch of questions from a grad student from another university.
But it turned out she was asking so many questions because she was writing a paper about how his paper was flawed.
My professor ended up being on the committee to peer review her paper (since he's famous for the topic).
He was a good sport about it and appreciated that research was happening. He just asked her to be more forthcoming in the future.
What's /sci/'s opinion on hypnosis? Is it real or a hoax? Is it possible to erase the number 4 of the mind, or make a person drink water but taste coke?
>>8647767
I always thought it was fake, but one of my friends didn't remember anything after getting hypnotized. Another one of my friends did but said he went along with it anyway.
Either way, it seems to relax people and put them in a kind of meditative/dreamy state.
>>8647767
>What's /sci/'s opinion on hypnosis? Is it real or a hoax?
From what I understand, it's a bit of both.
It exists, but the effects aren't nearly as dramatic or showy as people think they are.
completely true, just go on dlsite and search for hypnosis audios
Hello /sci/. I'm a mathematics middle school/high school teacher (not US) and I'm trying to come up with some sort of competition where my students have to solve problems relating to the material. I need help finding such problems.
Here's what I'm looking for: I would like the problems to be easy so that you could do several of them during one class (so no tough book problems) but not so straight-forward as to be blatantly obvious either. For example questions like those from the math section from the SAT would be perfect.
The problem is I would like access to a lot of questions for free (whereas the SAT apparently you have to buy their books and there are only ten tests). I would also like questions that instead of calculating an answer the stundents are given some reasoning and they have to say if it's correct/incorrect and justify it (idk if that makes sense).
So my question is: are there any free resources with a ton of questions somewhat like the SAT for free? Obviously I would like the questions to be in the middle/high school math range (no advanced topics).
