Underrated universities.
I'll start with the National Technical University of Athens. It might not be one of the best universities in the world, but the engineering program is pretty solid. Certainly a Top 100 (in this department - engineering).
Do you have any "hidden gems" in your country?
ITT: schools I go to without a good ranking
>>8651276
I wish people are reasonable and don't just try to boost their schools.
If it's bad, just say it's bad.
I'm also sure some universities don't have a good ranking overall, but in a certain department it's actually pretty good.
My Community College is actually one of the best schools in the world
Why is /sci/ so hostile and aggressive?
Literally every other thread has some edgelord saying "brainlets kys" or some equally low-value variation thereof.
>>8651082
Fucking kill yourself brainlet you should be able to solve this without help.
>>8651111
Nice quads, but seriously, it's just 4chan culture and crossboarders, we're not all edgelords.
They're insecure and want to feel better than someone.
/tg/ is the friendliest board in my opinion.
Not arguing morality of being gay.
Is there really any solid basis in homosexuality being a result of one's DNA? It doesn't make any fucking sense of why being gay would have any evolutionary advantages for a species.
>>8650943
it's definitely hereditary.
more than 90% of straight-straight offspring comes out straight
more than 90% of gay-gay offspring comes out gay,
so with facts like that it's basically impossible to argue that it doesn't have a genetic basis
>>8650964
>more than 90% of gay-gay offspring comes out gay
nice
>>8650964
>more than 90% of gay-gay offspring comes out gay,
Where the hell does that statistic come from?
>information cannot move faster than the speed of light
>expect that we can predict future using science, gaining information from future systems
Explain.
>>8650928
predicting the future or controlling the future
>>8650928
We can assign probabilities to things that might happen based off what we already know
entanglement does, in fact, "move" faster than the speed of light
so there's that
Does it depress anyone else that unless you're hawking level, any contributions you make to science will largely be insignificant.
I take it this is your first time on /sci/.
>>8650848
>contributions
Wrong. You can contribute in multiple ways even if you are not mastermind. In fact, anything you do in """"science""" (what the fuck does that word mean outside the schooling system?) helps grand-master scientists like Hawking and others do their work.
Examples
1. Hawking is studying black holes. He needs 10 scientists to help him. Each of those scientists need 10 scientists to help them. Each of those need 10 laboratory-workers/technicians/programmers/whatever to help them. So just be someone in this value chain; help better minds achieve their goals.
2. Society has priorities of food over black holes. If lesser scientists didn't occupy these positions, Hawking could never study such abstract and useless concepts such as black holes; he would probably be employed in studying fuels or fertilizers.

Uh... barely a handful of people on the planet have a basic understanding of it. You won't find any of those people on /sci/. You'll probably never understand it in your lifetime. Is that a good enough red pill for you?
I compiled some notes on the weak nuclear force. I expect there to be many things that could be either slightly or completely wrong so tell me if there is. Also let me know what parts I should get more information on.
> protons and neutrons are hadrons
> hadrons are made up of quarks
> three quarks make up a hadron
> each quark has a color
> a quark can be either red, blue, or green
> each quark has to be comprised of a red, blue, and green quark
> a set of the three-colored quarks is held together by a gluon that travels to each quark and changes its color
> a gluon is facilitated by the strong force; a gluon is the force carriers for the strong force
> a quark also has a flavor
> there are six flavors
> up, down, strange, charm, top, and bottom
> the strange, charm, top, and bottom flavor all decay into either an up or down flavor
> this decay is facilitated through the weak force
> a neutron has one up-flavored quark and two down-flavored quarks
> a proton has two up-flavored quarks and one down-flavored quark
> the weak force has two force carriers
> W bosons and Z bosons
> W boson can be either positively or negatively charged
> Z bosons have no charge
> a neutrino carries either a W boson or a Z boson
> a neutrino can pass its boson to an atom via the weak force
> a positively charged W boson can go into a neutron
> It it does it changes one of the down-flavored quarks to an up-flavored quark
> this causes there to be two up-flavored quarks in the hadron
> therefore the neutron turns into a proton
> this changes the element of the atom
>>8650703
These are not notes of the Weak force, they are noted on the Standard Model. The weak force does not involve quarks, gluons, and their composites.
>>8650720
oh so I just described the Standard Model not the weak force?
>>8650720
oh right it's supposed to be notes for both the strong and weak force. forgot to put that in there, was high

FDA is overreaching and is seeking to classify anything genetically altered as a "drug". For instance if a breeder uses crispr to fix genetic defects in a breed, they will have to go through FDA and the animals created will be considered drugs.

Comment to the FDA
https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=FDA-2008-D-0394-0279
the altered genomic DNA in an animal is a drug within the meaning of section 201(g) of the FD&C Act because such altered DNA is an article intended to affect the structure or function of the body of the animal, and, in some cases, intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treat ment, or prevention of disease in the animal

Damn. That sucks balls. I hate stupid people who don't know what they are talking about and are terrified of GMOs.
What about crops? Aren't almost all crops genetically modified to some extent? Or does have to be modified in a certain way? I am especially thinking of corn.
>>8650513
93% of crops grown are GMO.
but OP, I fully support GMOs being heavily regulated if not banned, I'm going to submit my comment in support.

How hard would it be to increase the speed of neurons? The biggest problem of AI - Human competition is that humans think about 1,000,000 times slower than a similar computer due to the slow speed of biological neuron actions.
Is it possible to get massive speedups in terms of neuron speeds by "hacking" the brain with some smaller machinery that increased these speeds?
>>8650424
Action potentials jump between the myelin sheaths so maybe those can be lengthened
>>8650424
The myelin sheath is what acts as an insulator (sort of like rubber around electrical wires). So, making sure that you had good nutrition to have healthy sheaths would keep electrical charge in.
The big problem is the synaptic cleft. Even though there are electrical charges that propagate down the axon, ultimately, the communication between neurons is chemical. A vesicle has to release neurotransmitters. I can't think of a way to speed that process up.
An even bigger problem is that you can get low on neurotransmitters. So that might be another hack. Making sure that your neurons have plenty of nutrition to produce as much neurotransmitters as they need.
Finally, the whole process uses up a ton of ATP. ATP requires water and sugars to be produced. So, maybe a last hack would be to make sure you have plenty of energy. Eat pasta/sugar and drink water when gearing up for an exam or something brain intensive.
Pic related.
>>8650424
Neurons are slow compared to circuits yes, but the human brain is massively parallelized which is why the computation is much stronger.
How do I solve this?
TI-89
>>8650405
You can't. Galois theory proves that this is unsolvable.
