Completed a pure mathematics degree. Published as an undergraduate in math.

Working to transition to study systems/security within CS. Can I still be based doing hardcore Operating Systems security related research?

I'm coming out of the closest as a computer scientist.

How do you know if a degree in (pure) mathematics is right for you? I have always been good at math but I assume that is not enough. The highest level of math that I have taken is Calc I which is baby-tier. I am really enjoying Calc II so far, I am doing well in my engineering courses but the only thing that really gets me excited is Mathematics. It's the only course I dream about and really care to do on my own. Math majors of /sci/ can you tell what made you pursue a degree in applied or pure mathematics? And whether you think you made a good choice or not. What are rigorous proofs like? Please excuse me for the naive questions

>>8697751
Take a proof based course and you will know.

And do applied math (especially if you have a background in engineering ). You will still get to do plenty of proofs, the only difference is that you will have a chance of being hired after graduation.
>>
>>8697751

Those courses are nothing more than watered down pure math courses. If you want applications then double with engineering.

I'm making a game about robots and I need some sort of hand-wavey explanation for why they can move somewhat quickly in terms of motor control.

My limited knowledge of robotics would make me think that pretty much all power in kinematics would have to be derived from the servos in the joints. Is there an alternate theory on robotic kinematics I can latch onto and "futurize" or is there some sort of fictional tech I can apply to explain why the servos are so quick to respond and can lift such heavy weight?

The idea is that they are controlled by a single human that controls the mechs with some sort of neural interface. They go through intense physical therapy to develop motor controls for these mechs to the point that an experienced pilot will feel like the mech is a part of their physical body. I was thinking I could support this by saying that the humans develop neuronal structures in the motor cortexes as well as the cerebellum to help their control.

So how do I support this on the mech side? I've come across muscle wire which contracts when a charge is rung through it so maybe I could go with that tech and scale it up?

>>
Also the mechs aren't super huge. They can fit a human inside them. They're only like 50ft tall.
>>
>>8697417
If its a futuristic game just use the nuclear fusion meme to justify the power needed to make them move that fast. Also say graphite makes it strong enough to handle itself.
>>
>>8697442
Yeah I'm not concerned about power so much as the control and actuation.

So, I am studying physics on a low level and I want to know if I am calculating this properly.

"You get a personal jet which flies constantly around earth at the velocity 1000km/h. Approximately how much less do you age in 1 year?"

c = 300 000 km/s ~
v = 0,278 km/s ~
t = 31 500 000 s ~

How do you go about this?
18 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Not doing your homework for you, but I'll let you know what you're looking for. Your textbook should explain this. It's a few very basic formulas.

Just change your speed from km/h into a fraction of c. Then use that fraction of c to calculate gamma (a value used to describe space and time contraction and dilation). Then there should be a formula for experienced time related to at-rest time, usually represented as tau and t.
>>
>>8697151
It is not homework, I do not want to go past things before I feel confident I have grasped it. Thank you for your answer!

This was a "Think!" kind of question in the book
>>
>>8697132
Your proper time (ie the time in your inertial frame) would be [math] \tau = t/ \gamma [/math] now just substitute in your values.

Does orbital period make a difference on whether or not a planet is suitable for life? What possible implications would that have on us if we were to colonize a planet that rotates the star in 6 days?
31 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>8696307
I can't imagine it has much impact on biology. I think we'd be fine. You're not going to age faster because your planet is rotating around it's star faster.

We could even still use earth calendars there, no reason the length of the year actually has to be tied to the literal physical orbital period.
>>
I'm wondering how long a day lasts on these planets and how it would impact our sense of time. Would it "feel" like a normal earthday or would we get some kind of jetlag?

Someday

Some rowdy fucker is going to fly to the moon on a solo trip and set up a base

And then another rowdy fucker is going to do it

We're going to have some serious problems if we don't allow people to start buying land and shares on and of the moon

Oh...

And India says it's going to be using Helium 3 (moon energy) as a power source by 2030
