I don't get something

Let's say a photon is moving in a vacuum. Everyone agrees that it's supposedly massless. But doesn't it have kinetic energy which is according to Einstein also mass? Also I know there is Plank equation on how to calculate energy of a photon, but

E = mc^2
E(k) = 1/2mv^2
mc^2 = 1/2mv^2, since it's moving at speed of light =>
mc^2 = 1/2mc^2
mc^2 = 0, since c is constant =>
m = 0
E = 0

both mass and Energy are equal to 0.

What's happening here?

You got memed son
>>
>>8758044
E = mc^2 does only hold for non-moving objects, the photon has energy through its momentum
>>
>>8758044
Physicists realized that too, so they invented the concept of "rest mass." A photon doesn't have rest mass.

Does it make sense to learn Logic? Or is it entirely unrelated to Mathematics?

Should somebody learn Logic if they want to learn Mathematics?

Say you wanted to make a 5-sided die out of an equilateral triangular pyramid, where the probability of each face showing up is 1/5.

What ratio H/b would this occur for?

Obviously for H >> b you would have no chance of the die landing with a triangle face up. And if b > > H it would be flat like a coin. So there must be some ideal ratio of H/b do guarantee equal chance of all faces showing up.

I doubt there's an analytical solution to this - so is there any easy way to simulate this with a computer?

-original
-math-related
-not troll bullshit
-directly relates geometry and probability

This is the best post I've seen on /sci/ in a couple months OP, just so you know.

Conjecture: the rectangular faces and the triangular faces must have roughly equal area.
>>
>>8757851

great question. first you'd have to parameterize the probability of each side, which would likely involve the area as well as the "stability" given by how top-heavy the die is when resting on that size.
>>
>>8757851
Inscribe the shape in a sphere. Project the edges of the shape into the surface of the sphere such that they are in the directions at which the weight of the shape is balanced. Set the areas of the parts of the surface demarcated by the projected edges equal. The resulting shape is your die.

Is it shit? For example I remember when I was at school I acted like a brainlet, I had no interest in books at all or Math.

Then came Summer, when I was at Summer I actually started reading fantasy books I remember it was some faggotry book about a female cop in an the 19th century with diseases and shiet. I also got interested in the stars and bought a telescope to study the moon and draw pictures of it. I also got interested in math and started doing some math about the horizon? I forgot what math I was doing about it, maybe the distance?

Then school came, and I instantly became a brainlet. I lost all my interest of the reading fantasy books, studying the moon, and doing the math to measure the distance of the horizon. So is the American Education System to blame?

yes.
American Education System failed me too , and i am white male.
They did not properly teach social skills, what real life is really like, how people really act.
lots of things have to be figured out yourself. also they brought in police to spread drug propaganda which can be verified as lies , and they lied about the army draft thing at age 18.

Dumb stupid American Education System

Yep. Absolutely no base logical framework or capacity to reason is needed. You can just be an index and do just fine.

Most physicians are braindead trash anyway, sarcasm aside. You'd fit right in.

Current year:
>launching rockets from earth's surface
>combustion-based engine
>high fuel consumption
>can't carry personnel
>low storage space
>one-time use (inb4 space x)

What's stopping us from moving the entire process outside the atmosphere?
>send parts to space station
>assemble large spaceship in space
>implement a nuclear reactor in it
>guaranteed years of unlimited power supply
>use nuclear power to accelerate
>navigate at any speed you want
>accelerate to reach near-c speeds
>explore wherever you want

What are the pros and cons of this? submarines use nuclear power, why can't spaceships do the same?
If it's an issue of heat management, can't the nuclear reactor be placed in an area of the ship with thinner cover, so that the heat could disperse outside where the temp is absolute zero?
24 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
Oh wait fug, I guess nuclear power alone can't generate propulsion? I totally forgot about that.
Still, why not launch rockets directly from outside the atmosphere? wouldn't it be more efficient?
I mean, you can attach a fuel storage of any size you want, I've just read on wiki about projects for nuclear propulsion in space and there're quite a bit of ideas:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_propulsion#Spacecraft

The common issue seems to be the fuel, why not make the spacecraft bigger so it can carry more of it?
>>
Firstly what's stopping us is an elite ruling class that are so greedy they simply do not care about the progress of the species but simply collecting as much money and power as possible although their families could easily live off their fortunes for the next couple thousand years with zero work whatsoever.

I wanted to do some googling and found this discussion very interesting, I don't want to just copy past other's ideas so I'll share this link

It is extremely hard to find one damn one clear book about quantum physic. In almost every book, physicists try to present very fundamental Hilbert spaces definitions and theorems (dude weed if [A,B] = 0 then AB = BA lmao ! ), maybe to convince themselves they are not doing absolute bullshits, but they do not define properly their own operators. The most annoying thing is their absolute shit tier notations.
There are ten operators in quantum physics, ONLY TEN ! And finding a book which expose them clearly is extremely rare.

It's unbeliveable to see how unclear are the fundamental concepts of Hilbert spaces, projections, convex functions for quantum physicists, they really do not get what they are doing.

I'm not criticizing physicists ( I'm not a mathautist), only quantum physicists. Those who work in mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, statistic physics and RG understand what they are doing, but not quantum physicists.

It's really like they are enjoying their blurred concepts, without any kind of clear definitions.

Quantum physic is not hard. Understand it is basically understand any little class about basic algebra/analysis in Hilbert spaces. But quantum physicists are so ignorant they try to bullshit as much as they can their field so it could look like very complicated.

Death to those parasites.

Intro Quantum Mechanics books are written for undergrads or beginning grads in physics. To do QM rigorously you need Functional Analysis and Measure Theory. Physics students don't learn these, at least not before they take courses in QM.

What can we say about the polynomial:

[math]\displaystyle p_m(z) = \sum_{k=0}^m a_kz^k [/math], where [math]p_m(i) = 2^i, \ i = 0, 1, \dots, m [/math]

What do the coefficients look like? (other than that [math]a_0 = 1 [/math])
Here are the first few:
[math]p_0(z) = 1[/math]
[math]p_1(z) = 1 + z [/math]
[math]p_2(z) = 1 + \frac{1}{2}z + \frac{1}{2}z^2 [/math]
[math]p_3(z)= 1 + \frac{5}{6}z + \frac{1}{6}z^3 [/math]
[math]p_4(z) = 1 + \frac{7}{12}z + \frac{11}{24}z^2 - \frac{1}{12}z^3 + \frac{1}{24}z^4 [/math]

>>8756790
good observation anon, though I'm not sure how to prove this, as it is difficult to see the connection between [math]p_m(z)[/math] and [math]p_{m+1}(z) [/math], if we could find that an induction would be easy.

You shouldn't. Being a physical realist is stupid.

The fact that mass is a useful notion for humans to talk and calculate shit about the world around is doesn't mean mass "exists".
Fundamentally you have theories for smaller and smaller things, and some good approaches involve some field theories governed by some relatively simple dynamics equations with a few parameters and all the abstractions like mass are just summed up quantities, order parameters that have no bearing beyond the linguistic one. Same for black holes.
