ITT: Scientific blunders that everybody believes

>Well, the way gravity works it that mass curves spacetime, so smaller nearby objects fall towards larger objects due to a force called... gravity
50 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
The common misconception that baffles me is people thinking that mass has anything to do with how something is affected by gravity.

It is literally taught in elementary school that if you drop a baseball and a bowling ball off a tall building at the same time, both will hit the ground at the same time. So what the fuck is going on in peoples' heads when they ask
>"How is light affected by gravity if it has no mass?"
>>
0.9999... = 1
>>
>>8813077
What they're taught in elementary school is that all mass is attracted to the earth at the same rate. I.e, the increased attraction due to a larger mass is "canceled out" by the greater inertial mass, which happen to be exactly the same.

Is there anything wrong with studying 70-80 hours a week?
18 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Yes, it's hard to do
>>
Your social life and mental and emotional health will likely suffer, and unless you're a medical or law student, that's far more than you should need to study to get good grades with a full-time schedule.

Spending 70-80 hours a week between research, studying and teaching as a graduate student is to be expected but that's simply more study time than should be necessary for a standard paced degree program.

Math is usually presented sequentially.

Does a website or book exist that explains only explains every mathematical symbol and all of it's use cases in a vacuum?

As an example I could type in f(x) and just get a simple definition of f(x) and various use cases.

Let us settle it once and for all. Which notation should be the only used notation in vector analysis?

Never was a fan of nabla notation, usually it makes no sense in everything else but cartesian coordinates.

The notation from the country that has put men on the moon, I'd say

>>8812457
That would be Germany, and therefore European notation.

Any good book about arithmetic progression and geometric progression ?

I've looked everywhere but i can't find one that is dedicated to this subject .

The universe is model of state. The state is changing over time and following the second law of thermodynamics which causes entropy to approach its maximum as time approaches infinity

Stars, planets, biological life, are all just methods of increasing the entropy of the universe. Life is just little whispy emergent lines of coincidence that form in pockets of stable conditions and go on to eventually increase the universe's entropy through technological development

We are nothing but entropy increasing machines to eat food and shit it out and build and process material.

Biological life decreases entropy.

Terraforming of planets, Dyson spheres, and atomic bombs decrease entropy?

>>8812129

Yes.

Every intervention of life (intelligent or not) decreases entropy.

Are engineers at the top of society in the hearchial tier of application of willpower through intelligence?

Engineer here. Probably not. Almost all of us work our asses of for four years, get a bachelors degree then settle into a comfy upper middle class life. I sure don't have the willpower for the 12 or so years it takes to be a specialist doctor.
>>
>>8811949
I'm an engineer as well and regret not becoming a specialist doctor

hell I'd probably even do internal medicine or pediatrics now that I know they make 200k/year

Finding the sum of all prime numbers below 2 million is easy, I can even do it on Python.

Anyone that doesn't know how to do this simple calculation is a dumb brainlet and shouldn't be on this board.

Only another few hundred thousand iterations to go before I hit 2 million.
