It seems like the longer humanity plays out the more retarded it becomes. There doesn't seem to be any time in history in which there were more idiots as a percentage of the population than their now are. During times when humans were only in the millions, polymaths and geniuses were everywhere. Now idiots complete college degrees, call themselves intellectuals and get basic shit RELEVANT TO THEIR DEGREE wrong. I have many big plans, but they all require a sizable population of non-retards, and I'm starting to think none of them will be achievable because the population has just become too fucking stupid. So my question is, is this true? Has the world simply become too stupid for important intellectual pursuits (not related to fantasy technology)?

There aren't more idiots, if anything WAY less. The only thing that's changed is that those idiots are more visible.
>>
The skill ceiling has been raised, thus less people are hitting their heads.

>There aren't more idiots, if anything WAY less
Yeah this is a common claim by retards. There's no actual evidence to support it and the evidence actually points to a gradual decrease in overall intelligence over time. There are certainly more people who consider themselves intellectual hot shit now, but that's just do to the special snowflake method of raising children to be insufferable that's been going on for decades now.

>>8847085
Not really. Even if you consider the old polymaths of Europe or China, it's hard to find people even on THEIR level.

Well gee where do I recognize this series
>>
For brevity let the left-hand side be E and the right-hand side be O

Consider the function [math]s:E \to O[/math] given by the rule [math]n\mapsto n+1[/math].

If n is even then s(n) is odd, so for every n such that [math]\frac{1}{2n} \in E[/math] it holds that [math]s(n) \in O[/math] so [math]E \subseteq O[/math].
On the other hand, because [math]2n-1 \leq 2n[/math] for every n, taking unions over n of both sides yields [math] O \subseteq E [/math].

Since [math]E \subseteq O[/math] and [math]O \subseteq E[/math], putting the two together yields E = O which completes the proof.

Is there a canonical name for the function that maps every y in the range of some many-to-one function f into the set { x | f(x) = y }?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Many-to-one functions don't have inverses, by the definition of a function
>>
>>8848647
If your range is a set of sets then they can. It's not strictly an inverse in the sense that composing it with the original yields an identity function but it doesn't matter for what I'm doing.
>>
>>8848631
Set valued functions; they went out of fashion in the early 20th century.

Is BPA-free plastic safe, or are there still things like estrogen in it?
12 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
No plastic is safe. The only way plastic could be safe is if it was inert, but anything you can combine with plastic to make it inert will turn it into ash.
>>
>>8848590
So would a BPA-free water filter pitcher defeat the purpose because it's still plastic? Should I get a faucet filter instead?

Trying to stop drinking bottled water but I'm not sure if I should drink it straight from the tap or what.

Just avoid ingesting things that have been sitting in containers for a significant amount of time or have been cooked in containers. Everything except jarred crap is stored in plastic or lined containers.

Akira authorized every board to have its own meta thread as to review what seems to be wrong and what needs to be changed.

Without further ado I guess I should list one thing that is commonly agreed among some of the true /sci/ posters and/or ''oldfags'':

>Since the election, /pol/ has shown dedication into spreading their anti-scientific beliefs and other pseudo science (flat earth, IQ, race bait, etc). As a result, this board has turned into a /pol/-proxy where most of the discussions have either nothing to do with science/math or are simply threads about politics.

In response the mods have proven to be ineffective, to the point that sometimes it seems as if they were allowing it.

What should be done about this?
38 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>8848247
Autosage all threads that have "IQ" and "race" in the OP?

Though that would not really stop /pol/ from shitposting in other threads
>>
My problem with /sci/ is that OP is always, perdon me, a bag of sticks.
>>
Talking about race is certainly not "anti-scientific". If you don't want /sci/ to talk about that, that's fine, just say you want this to be a board that talks about science but not some parts of it, like how human beings have been affected by evolution. There are some parts of science that are very taboo and it makes sense why people on this board don't want to talk about it.

My girlfriend sees a naturopath for her IBS, and claims that so far none of her real doctors have had success treating her.
She recently took a IgG blood test to check for sensitivities, and on top of the gluten, milk, and numerous other foods she has been instructed to avoid previously...her most recent results apparently indicate she should avoid soy, eggs, and a few other things.
How can I explain to her without causing cognitive dissonance, that regardless of her difficulties with real doctors, this is the wrong way to approach her IBS?

Just dump her. It's a lot easier than trying to help her.
>>
>>8848149
No grain products, no fried or high temp cooked eggs (boiled eggs are fine), and no dairy products. All green veggies should be cooked well. If she has an inflamed intestine right now, she needs to be on a full liquid diet for ten days to allow it to heal. Then take a week to slowly go back on solid foods. Over the counter stuff like ibuprofen will help with the pain of inflammation, but only take a max of 800mg a day for up to 3 days in a row.
>>
>>8848149
She may be just an idiot, or she may be woefully misinformed. The former cannot be cured or endured, the later can be corrected over time.

Which one applies to her is something you have to judge.

Guys, I got it. The last hinder to progress.

Language. People can't work together when they don't speak the same language. People can't understand the word that a specialist uses with a very specific meaning. People can't grasp a concept if it hasn't got a proper name. A deficit of language, not knowledge, prevent someone from learning.

What can be done ?
- Remove useless words.
- Teach people more words.

What would be the first pointless words that takes up excessive cognitive space that you would remove to improve the world, /sci/ ?

Wasn't sure what board to post on, I guess my question counts as anatomy maybe.

I got bit by a dog yesterday. I boiled it out and cleaned it with peroxide and alcohol then wrapped it for a while. When I took the bandage off it looked ok but after a while the flesh or muscle or whatever started swelling and poking out of the wound. What is this and how do I stop it?
