Where are you in your string theory journey?
Have you mastered mirror symmetry and topological string theory yet?
Have you learned whatever the fuck the web based formalism is (https://arxiv.org/abs/1506.04087)?
Thoughts on implications of AGT?
Should all young string theorists read Lurie's tomes?
Do you think string phenomenology will still be a meme 30 years from now?

>Where are you in your string theory journey?

I've read BBS for the physics side of things. More interested in the Mathematical stuff though. Working on that now.

>Have you mastered mirror symmetry and topological string theory yet?

The usual A/B-Model stuff and MS defined via those models. Working on learning HMS, mainly the algebraic side right now.

>Have you learned whatever the fuck the web based formalism is

nope

>Thoughts on implications of AGT?

don't know anything about it

>Should all young string theorists read Lurie's tomes?

That shit is above my level. His Spectral Algebraic Geometry book has a surprisingly smooth introduction (i.e. A good chapter 0 introducing all relevant terminology to someone not familiar with infinity-category stuff) , but it is way too long and currently disconnected from string theory to justify reading.

>Do you think string phenomenology will still be a meme 30 years from now?

no

What math/physics topics should I learn before start grasping string theory?
>>
>>8883628
1.Yeah that's probably the only situation I would recommend BBS is to get a quick rundown on the physics.
2. True, have you read Aspinwall's review? And nice, it'd be interesting to see what a non-pertubative understanding of topological ST on CYs looks like
3. understandable
4.It's the Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa Correspondence and in a nutshell it's correspondence between a 4d N=2 and a Toda conformal block and its understanding is requiring an increasing "categorification" of QFT not too different in spirit from what HMS did.
5. How big is the relation between his Higher Topos Theory and his proof of the cobordism hypothesis, if you know?
6. Yeah N=1 d=4 seems to be the next frontier of non perturbative understanding in the next decade

>>8883634
you definitely need to have intro quantum field theory down pretty well and 2d conformal field theory wouldn't hurt cause the CFT section in the intro string textbooks are too local to string theory in my opinion (although ch.15 of Polchinski is okay) and don't give a good taste of the subject as a whole, which once understanding, make the application to string theory more intuitive. Other than the necessary stuff about de Rham cohomology and the jist of singular homology, you just learn the math as you follow the textbooks and your interests.

What are the characteristics of a stupid person? How can you tell if someone has a low IQ without actually having the results of such a test?

Generally if they say things like "IQ tests don't matter" or "IQ tests don't matter beyond 120" or "I have an IQ of 145 but I think IQ tests are bullshit," they are most likely low-IQ brainlets.

I'll start. Suppose I want to show that p(x) = x^4+1 is irreducible over Q. I have already done this by showing it can't have any roots, and that a factorization into two 2-degree factors can't happen either. However, could I also do this by just saying that if a is a root of p, then equivalently a-1 is a root of q(x) = (x+1)^4+1? This one I can check using Eisenstein's criterion (which could potentially be faster). I don't see why this would be wrong, but I'm tired as frikkin heck, so maybe I should just kms.

PHYSICS PEOPLE

So I posted this thread about a year ago but I thought it might be interesting to do it again, got some interesting discussion going.

Twins A and B are travelling close to the speed of light with no acceleration in a periodic universe (you go far enough and come back on yourself).

This means that each twin will see the other's clock run slower and will hence age quicker than the other.

>twinparadox.png

Obviously, the solution to the normal Twin Paradox in relativity is that one of the twins must accelerate, which breaks the symmetry.

Here however, you get the same twin paradox but with seemingly no solution - hence either relativity is bullshit or the periodic universe cannot work. Discuss.

You have a tacit third frame of reference that experiences no force in the middle from which you measure the other two, dipshit.
>>
Learn about relativity. You need a 3rd reference frame in all cases when calculating relativity. That's basic 2nd semester physics that even *I* know and I'm a Geologist
>>
>>8886858
>>8886863
so when A and B meet who's older? Each keeps watching themselves get older and older than the other so does that stop? When?

It's odorless, but you can certainly sense it as air becoming stuffy and heavy.
>>
>>8885945
CO2 is odorless, the carbonic acid it forms in your nose is not.
>>
>>8886008
Well that's how detecting odors work in the first place. A molecule of the substance reacts on your tongue or in your smell receptors and what's what you detect

It's not like nitrogen which produces no odor you can detect

>>
>>8883718
It's worse than not understanding and getting A's like most of the people i know, and it's not only math.

Today's education is retarded, schools teach you specifically what you need to know in order to pass a test, not the actual concepts, you never truly understand the subject unless you do some research by yourself, and in tests outside of school you're fucked.
>>
>>8883718
Well there legitimately are some people with kinds of test anxiety who spaghetti out when put in those situations

Most people who claim that sort of thing simply don't understand the subject matter as well as they think though
