Thoughts on Nuclear Energy, Sci?
I've heard but haven't been able to confirm that by using a mix of Light water reactors, breeder reactors and uranium extraction from sea water, we could have enough fuel to outlast the sun.
Is that true?

It is cleaner and cheaper than most power sources

>Von Neumann's ability to instantaneously perform complex operations in his head stunned other mathematicians.[158] As a 6 year old, he could divide two 8-digit numbers in his head.[159] When he was sent at the age of 15 to study advanced calculus under the renowned analyst Gábor Szegő, Szegő was so astounded with the boy's talent in mathematics that he was brought to tears on their first meeting.[24]

>The Nobel Laureate Hans Bethe speculated: "I have sometimes wondered whether a brain like von Neumann's does not indicate a species superior to that of man".[17] Eugene Wigner wrote that, seeing von Neumann's mind at work, "one had the impression of a perfect instrument whose gears were machined to mesh accurately to a thousandth of an inch."[160] Paul Halmos states that "von Neumann's speed was awe-inspiring."[16] Israel Halperin said: "Keeping up with him was ... impossible. The feeling was you were on a tricycle chasing a racing car."[161] Edward Teller admitted that he "never could keep up with him".[162] Teller also said "von Neumann would carry on a conversation with my 3-year-old son, and the two of them would talk as equals, and I sometimes wondered if he used the same principle when he talked to the rest of us."[163] When George Dantzig brought von Neumann an unsolved problem in linear programming "as I would to an ordinary mortal", on which there had been no published literature, he was astonished when von Neumann said "Oh, that!", before offhandedly giving a lecture of over an hour, explaining how to solve the problem using the hitherto unconceived theory of duality.[164]
>>
>Lothar Wolfgang Nordheim described von Neumann as the "fastest mind I ever met",[158] and Jacob Bronowski wrote "He was the cleverest man I ever knew, without exception. He was a genius."[165] George Pólya, whose lectures at ETH Zürich von Neumann attended as a student, said "Johnny was the only student I was ever afraid of. If in the course of a lecture I stated an unsolved problem, the chances were he'd come to me at the end of the lecture with the complete solution scribbled on a slip of paper."[166]

Why can't we use RTG generators in automobiles?
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Because they're feeble.
>>
>>8926650
Power density is shit. Also crashes, but mainly the shit power density. RTGs are being considered for nuclear powered ocean environmental monitoring robots. Now jnstead of lasting a year, they will run for 10 years. The NRC has ok'd similar radioisotopes for oce monitoring devices so it might actually work

How much math is necessary for a Petroleum Engineering degree?

I absolutely hate mathematics. I had great grades in it, but dropped it out of my life as soon as I had the chance. Seeing as how well paid the Petroleum Engineering fields are, I'd give it a shot.

What are the requirements?
29 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
here's a tip

pick your favourite school offering a petro engineering degree

google their website

look at the degree requirements

if you can't figure out how to do that you're unlikely to succeed in getting a degree anyway

I try to stay from feminism (recovering /pol/ack) but I can't fucking believe this bitch.

"it's considerable strategic advangtage, however, often leads its defenders to overlook the that the feminist empiricist solution in fact deeply subverts empircism. The social identity of the inquirer is supposed to be irrelevant to the "goodness" of the result of research. Scientific method is supposed to be capable eliminating ant biase due to the fact that indvidual researchers are white or black, Chinese or French. But feminist empiricism argues that women (or feminists, weither men or women) as a groups are more likely to produce unbiased and objective result than are men (or nonfeminists) as a group."
What is this some kinda fucking trojan horse tricking people or some shit?

The problem isn't feminism, it's empiricism. Empiricism works the same way for racism and sexism.
You're either a Cartesian rationalist or you are a brainlet.
There is nothing wrong with feminism.

lim n -> inf

n/n =1/n+1/n+1/n+1/n+...

lim n -> inf, 1/n=0

n/n=0

The series converges at 0 because the function 1/n+1/n... where n goes to infinity represents a series of infinitesimally small quotients.

I know this is not a rigorous explanation but that's how I was taught to understand it

So are these short spined dogs a good example of the kind of poly genetic mutation that pops up out of nowhere and if for selected for end up in speciation?

I know its impossible to dig right through the center of the earth but could you dig through it anywhere else? pic related
20 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Mate what the fuck are you even talking about, you can't dig deep enough, the position isn't important.
>>
>>8931011
How can you dig anywhere close to the "center" of the Earth if it's flat?
>>
>>8931011
What would happen if we built a giant space saw and cut off part of the Earth like this? Would gravity still hold it there or would it fly out and become another moon? Would the rest of the Earth reshape back into a sphere?

So I'm learning tensors and found a thing i can't quite understand:

The formula for 3d cross product is as follows:
[eqn]c^i=\epsilon _{ijk}a^jb^k[/eqn]

However, applying tensor transformation rule yields
[eqn]\frac{\partial{x^i'}}{\partial{x^i}}}c^i=\frac{\partial{x^i}}{\partial{x^i'}}}\epsilon _{ijk}a^jb^k[/eqn]
, because LCT is of rank (0,3).

Where did I fuck up?
15 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
basically [eqn]{\partial{x^i'}}{\partial{x^i}}={\partial{x^i}}{\partial{x^i'}}[eqn/]
>>
[eqn]{\partial{x^i'}}{\partial{x^i}}={\partial{x^i}}{\partial{x^i'}}[/eqn]
>>
the first equation is ill formed since c should be covariant

Its data from 39 sample, y axis is hours worked and x axis is age. I'm trying to do a linear regression model, but these two blue points (highlighted like shit) are messing my line. The red line is far better, but do I have any right to simply remove those blue points?

I'm surprised no one is talking about this here. Within the next week, RocketLab will be having the maiden launch of their Electron rocket.

* Putting New Zealand in the exclusive launch club, launching from the Mahai peninsula
* Only the eighth ever orbital launch from the southern hemisphere.
* lightweight 3D-printed Rutherford engines, with the innovation of using an electric pump for propellants
* same architecture as Falcon, but scaled down: nine engines on first stage, one on second stage. 18 meters long, can put 150kg into sun synchronous orbit. All stages are lightweight carbon fiber.
* Has the potential to take over the cubesat launch market

So did it work?
>>
>>8930521
I'm particularly interested in the electric pumps. From what I understand, turbopumps are a major portion of the cost and design effort involved in building a launch vehicle. so if electric pumps work out then they could be a neat alternative for small launchers and upper stages.
