Okay so this is bugging me
1 ÷ 3 = .333- (one third)
But
.333- × 3 = .999

3/3rds is less than one according to our math?

Please /sci/ I'm desperate,

In 2016 I read an article about a scientific study that correlated changes in approaches in various scientific fields with the dates leading scholars died. The authors empirically identified a surge in creativity 1-3 years after leading scholar's death. It supported Kuhn's idea of paradigm shifts.

Problem: I can't find the paper nor the web article I read. I tried everyone. Did anyone read this and could share references? Please?

Welcome to the age of degradation and the demise of the stars. Most of the ordinary matter in the universe is flinging away from all other mater. Entropy is generally agreed to be a certainty and life is meaningless....

Why can't the end of everything be more...dramatic, rather than some sort of slow prolonged fall into death.

Entropy is pressing. There is a way to trick the wave as it is coming to skip your ship if you are fast enough...
>>
>>8932713
Fuck off with this bullshit that won't even be experienced.
Life has a meaning and that meaning is to interpret meaning(biosemiosis)
Life's epic continues. The anthropocene is still a very depressing time with a lot of enslaved enthalpy being released as entropy here on earth.

This exercise was given out to students at my university, and almost no one was able to solve it.
Even the solution given by the assistant was wrong.
I have a solution by now, but I'm wondering what /sci/ can come up with.

If one of the limits (consider q_n) were defined, they would have to be integers:
Just take epsion<1/2 and the limit condition says the sequence stays constant at some integer forever.

In that case, you after some m, for n>m you can pull out q_n of the limit. The limit equals
q_m^(-1) \lim_{n\to infty} p_n
The limit \lim_{n\to infty} p_n exists and is thus again some integer.

Maybe I use some stronger theorem here and don't notice it, but I have the feeling my steps are true.
>>
>>8932597
What you are saying about integer sequences is true, but you are forgetting that if a sequence does not diverge towards infinity, it still does not have to converge.
>>
>>8932570
I proceed by contradiction.
Case 1: suppose pn converges to k and qn converges to c

First, as the natural numbers are closed (topological definition of closed), so k and c are natural numbers.

Then the limit as pn/qn goes to infinity would be k/c which is a rational number, which is a contradiction.

Case 2: pn converges to k, qn diverges:
Then pn is bounded from above and thus the limit to infinity of pn/qn = 0 which is a rational number and thus a contradiction.

Case 3: pn diverges and qn converges. Then qn is bounded from above and thus the limit to infinity of pn/qn diverges, which is a contradiction.

/sci/

Yes I am brainlet.

Usually when you are learning some subject you are learning basic, fundamentals and then you are learning more advanced stuff, after you learn advanced stuff it turns out that there is even more advanced stuff.

Now in math its completely different, you can learn basic stuff like +/-/:/* and then you are learning lets say calculus, but if you want to learn statistic or discrete math, calculus is not going to help you.

Is there a way to connect everthing?

Usually when I learn something, First I have big picture of problem in my head and then I study piece after piece.

This way allows me to understand real application of the thing I study and expand it in future.

but in math?

I feel like different areas are barely connected or not connected at all.

I would expect that all derived from one main root?

Start with set theory (ZFC or even ZF until you need the C) and logic and go from there.

I'm trying to start self-studying stuff using recommendations for textbooks from the /sci/ wiki. How long should it take to make it through one textbook?

>>
>>8931790
There was a similar post earlier.

It really depends on what you want to know. Going through an entire calc textbook is an absolute waste of time. Work through until triple integrals, maybe 10-20ish chapters. Without a teacher it should take around 3-6 months if you work 20 hours a week.

Read, take notes, review, do problems.
>>
Where is a place with a bunch of review problems for all calcd 1 through 4?
>>
>>8931790
Depends how long the book is and how dense it is.

>>8931804
>Going through an entire calc textbook is an absolute waste of time. Work through until triple integrals

But then you miss out on all the vector calculus theorems.

I think we can all agree that - at least at shit-tier schools - the focus of teaching mathematics is almost exclusively computational at the early stages.

Myself, having to hold a job on the side... I tend to focus on mastering the computational side ( to get those A's) before worrying about proofs and 'why?'

So /sci/, my question is, how doomed are computationally taught students at upper-division mathematics? Those that have been there, how did you fare? Was your upbringing computational or based in proofs? Any advice?

What exactly is so bad about global warming?

Doing nothing about it till it happens is literally the best option.

if it turns out it really is bad then the earths population will be reduced and people left will eventually find a way to make things work.

The same people who tend to believe in things like over population also believe in global warming, global warming is the perfect solution to overpopulation. there is no more ethical way to reduce the global population than by going beyond the supposed point of no return in regards to ppm of co2 in the atmosphere.
