Is it important to understand a proof or is it more logical to just accept a proof has been verified by countless others so you don't need to waste your time understanding the proof?

Continental or analytic philosophy? If you prefer analytic philosophy wouldn't you be better off studying mathematics rather than philosophy?

Wrong board, and I don't read any philosophy published after the fall of Rome.

>Inb4 hurr brainless ur a pleb

Fuck off undergrad.
>>
>>8959308
Analytic.

I an studying math but that doesn't mean there isn't much to learn from modern analytic philosophers, especially when it comes to issues in mathematical philosophy and foundations (e.g. logical pluralism). I highly encourage pure mathematics students at all levels to get some exposure to analytic philosophy. There are some very interesting ideas there.
>>
>>8959310
I'm also asking why people would choose to study analytic philosophy over mathematics; this is the best board for the topics on offer.

>Fuck off undergrad.
Why so defensive? Who are you quoting? I didn't say that.

I'm extremely interested in certain topics in theoretical physics, but some of them are nearly impossible to grasp without a decent understanding of the math and science fundamentals.

Clearly this would be very time-consuming and mentally taxing. Do any of you find day-to-day benefits of studying these things aside from your work or school? Does it ever come up in conversation? Is satisfying enough to know these things that you would advise taking the time to learn about them even if they didn't provide academic or monetary gain?

>Does it ever come up in conversation?

No. Not unless you are talking to mathematicians/physicists.

> satisfying enough to know these things that you would advise taking the time to learn about them even if they didn't provide academic or monetary gain?

Yes it is satisfying, but I would only advise it if you really enjoy it.

>is something I find to be subjectively valuable worth pursuing?
Uh, yes?

Me, I'm just a humdrum stress engineer, but I still got most of a physics degree while in undergrad, and am taking classes on acoustics now in grad school. From a career perspective, I should be taking nothing but structures classes, but studying nothing but structures all day would drive me crazy.

No, it never comes up in conversation, and it's never gotten me a cute girl's attention or a promotion, but it is personally satisfying.

>Does it ever come up in conversation?
In my previous job I got a lot of questions from colleagues (I worked as a programmer to pay down student loans). I immediately knew when they had got a new issue of the more tabloid science magazines. That set the topic for the lunch break.

"What's outside the universe?" and what happens after we die?" are both questions too paradoxical for humans to work out but if you think about it they are the same question; "what exists after everything ends?" Even the proposed solutions are similar, compare multiverse with reincarnation. Maybe the answer to one will answer the other and vice versa.

senseless question

Your body stops functioning and that's pretty much it

Can anyone knowledgeable in psychiatry (or general therapy practice, not looking for psychological theory) explain: what's the benefit of content warnings for things that are not in themselves traumatic? I can understand that explicit images and descriptions of rape, gore, or domestic violence can be triggering to certain PTSD sufferers, and that it isn't necessary to confront such aversions in order to treat the disorder (I was treated for PTSD with non-confrontational therapy). In the case of "associations", however-- where objects and ideas that are much more common than sources of trauma themselves supposedly trigger some PTSD patients-- wouldn't it be problematic to completely avoid "the simpsons" or "exposed collarbones" (as in this example) for the duration of one's treatment? Are such warnings valid at all in the context of PTSD, or are they the result of self-diagnosis and failure to create a proper recovery plan?

Science is an illusion. Basically nobody has a fucking clue what is truly going on. Sure, science may be able to give reductionist explanations of material phenomena, but it lacks any real explanatory power when it comes to the big questions: how and why. They may try to tell you they know the how and that the why is meaningless, but this is an insult to human logical faculties. We may be the smartest beings in the history of the universe so don't let them tell you that you are stupid.

>>
>science can't explain how
I'll give you "why" due to ethics & company but science is literally the logical process of figuring out "how". "Why" is usually left to philosophy.

How different are behavioral addictions to substance or drug addictions with respect to physical effects ie pathways, dopamine release(magnitude and frequency) and interactions with other factors for example in the case of ejaculation the release of Oxycontin?

While I am not closed to the ideas on YBOP and NoFap etc it seems to me that they equate behavioral addictions to drug addictions and that doesn't sit to well with me as of right now.

Anyone care to give me a more detailed rundown of behavioral addictions?

>implying that pic related ain't the greatest

After over a decade of chasing stimulation, I have just now fully realized the double-edged sword that is the brain's natural reward system. Overindulging on every dopamine producing pathway imaginable has fried my synapses and created many new challenges such as lack of motivation, concentration, etc.

I want to make a complete 180* transformation. Instead of blowing through neurotransmitters like a filthy animal, starting now I want to avoid all unnecessary pleasures and stimulation. I want to cultivate a stone-cold, monk-like executive control, so that I can allocate all pleasure chemicals to the pursuit of truly important things like science, math, and sustainable happiness.

Besides avoiding the obvious culprits such as drugs (amphetamines, caffeine, nicotine, ...), vidya games, and junk food, what do I need to do to achieve this goal /sci?

Build up the ability to meditate for two hours every day. And I'm not talking about some random bullshit but solid concentration. Also employ operant conditioning techniques on yourself and track your progress through journaling.

You need to be a brainlet.

But I see you already got that going for you, so keep it up famalam.
