Is he our savior, or the bringer of our destruction
>>9043244
Vsauce is actually pretty good for getting people interested in science. I bet 75% of /sci/ has binged watched vsauce.
The problem is everyone thinks they're so fucking smart for watching an obscure and esoteric math channel with 25 subscribers.
>>9043275
I've never watched him. He looks like a cuck and a brainlet.

Since there is no dedicated board for psychology, I'll go ahead and post this here. Depression has been on the rise in our society for the last few decades. More and more young kids are committing suicide, succumbing to drug use, and falling prey to this banal, narcissistic culture purported by the figureheads of popular culture. I'm no exception to this, I lost all active desire to do anything. I'm not sad, no. It's just that everything is boring. Life seems to have lost all essence of vitality and purpose. Does anyone else experience the same? If so how do you deal with it? How do you suggest I deal with this ? Does it need a chemical cure? Or a psychological cure?

Sums up what I'm talking about I suppose.
Idk know much about psychology but how much of an impact does depression have on the physical side of the body?
>>9042296
Fatigue is a major effect of depression
I think I may be depressed, too. All do 24/7 is shitpost on /sci/ and fantasize about hurting the people here. I feel nothing but disgust and hatred for the losers and retards who clog this board. Probably doesn't help that I live alone and make my living through online scams.
why is it that psychology always has to prove itself as a science, do you consider it a science? is what is a science a matter of method or something else?
>>9042029
Someone give me an actual argument for psychology not being a pseudoscience. Convince me that it's not a complete farce.
>>9042061
through the use of experimentation we come to understand certain aspects of human behavior(?)
>>9042029
People don't like to be told how their brains work. I makes them realize they don't have control over everything.
In all seriousness it's just that the human brain is super-duper complicated and psychology is only beginning to scratch the surface of how we think
So, why isn't everyone using org-mode for note taking?
> live latex inline preview
> configure latex exactly how you want
> perfect folding/headline management
> searchable
> completely programmable
> runs on any toaster
How are you writing a pdf without using LaTeX as your language? I use vim and live LaTeX preview, and have to code everything accordingly (e.g. \maketitle)
>>9041937
The pdf on the right is a book, not really related to the left (besides subject). The beauty of emacs is that you can display latex equations inside the editor without creating the pdf (the text is written in orgs markup language but I can use \(\) and \begin{env} and it is processed as latex).
You can export from .org to pdf but it is a lot of work to make org organize headings properly, plus you miss the folding of sections which is one of my problems with writing latex directly.
>>9041924
Redpill me. I am aware of org-mode but I have never considered how it might be useful for note-taking. What is your process like?
What do you guys think the end goal for the universe is, if there is one. What caused the big bang to happen? Is there a reason or end goal for evolution like some sort of ultimate being that cant evolve no more. Is there a bigger picture?
I know these dont have definitive answers, they may not even have answers at all but i like to here peoples theorys and people on this board are generally critical thinkers so i thought it might be interesting to hear
>>9041598
not everything has to have a purpose. As humans we always try and personify things, but the simply truth is not everything is driven with ulterior motive
>>9041624
yeh thats what i personally think, except the cause of the big bang, i think maybe someone could of caused that to happen. Kinda fustrating how i will never find out
>>9041634

So, do you catch more or less raindrops if you run through the rain?
>>9041482
more.
Try with a bigger bait, next time.
A running person has more surface area to catch drops because their limbs are more exposed.
Is there a time of year when humans are more prone to seek each other out and fuck each other?
Serious question (asking for a friend.)
Winter mostly, people are more enclosed, warmer clothes, "safer" and more intimate environment.
When you strike up a conversation with a girl in a library or in a coffee house for example she's going to be more welcoming and open.
Summer is the worst, but keep in mind this is about having a RELATIONSHIP, not just meaningless sex.
People like to fuck all times of the year. In a typical year, birth rates are pretty constant across each month. So the answer is no.
>>9041417
Peak birth rate year is usually August. So more people fuck in the winter. This is usually couples of some sort having the kids though. Most partying is done when the weather is nice, but not peak summer heat. So late spring and early fall when everyone is still in classes is the prime time to get some pussy, OP.
What if gender identity really is a spectrum?
What if Hitler was wrong?
We can go all day with the "what ifs", but it's just not part of reality.
>>9039311
What if it wasn't but now it is?
Well, you have your hypothesis, now design a methodology and go for it.
What if gender is a Mobius strip?
Pro Tip: you can't.

Puzzle here, looking for some creative solutions from those better versed in bizarre notations perhaps

I feel like this might be cheating but here are some of my ideas:
Unacceptable cheat level:
- breaking the matchsticks
Questionably cheaty:
- Knuth's notation (pictured)
- Repeating Decimal notation (not sure if valid at all)
Sorta Cheaty:
- Flipping the image

If im rolling d8s and rerolling any 1s how much would the rerolls increase my rolls?
>>9043917
you have to reroll 1/8th of your rolls
and then 1/8th of those rerolls
and then 1/8th of those rererolls
and so on
so if you do decide you'll do N rolls then you'll do N + N/8 + N/64 + N/512 + N/4096... rolls
which comes out to N*(8/7) rolls. So you increase your rolls by about 14%
>>9043926
Oh, no, it's not rerolling all ones. It's if you get a one you reroll but have to keep the reroll even if it's another one.

Is the Paris agreement doing a good job in fighting against climate change? I want to know cuz some friends of mine tell me it's useless
>>9043466
No. It's literally just a wealth redistribution scheme.
>>9043477
Why do you think that?
>>9043466
There's no committee in place to enforce the agreement.
>American companies, honest, hardworking
Country signs the agreement, so companies start working toward meeting the standards. Burden on production.
>Chink companies, soulless, shrewd
Country signs the agreement, there's nobody telling them to do anything so they don't change anything. Keep polluting more than most countries in the world together. Country earns a PR boost because they defend a meaningless agreement.
Now tell me, why do you think China defends the agreement so much? Because it's extremely beneficial to them, as both a marketing move and a way to stop any new agreements that may indeed include a regulatory commission. Something that thechinks definitely do not want.
I have nothing against an agreement to reduce emissions, just make it fair for everyone.
Hello /sci/,
I was hoping we could have a discussion on the current state of medical science when it comes to conditions like "chronic pain" and its relevance given the human condition as we know it today (impulsive, instant gratification-seeking, unable to claim personal responsibility, etc...). I don't intend this post to be of a political nature but it will likely lean towards that direction since it will be a commentary of sorts on healthcare as well.
As you may or not be aware, Fibromyalgia is psychological condition where an individual experiences widespread pain and increased sensitivity to said pain. Research has shown that there are absolutely no observable markers that would explain the presence of said pain. Absolutely nothing. On paper, these people are completely normal. This may be hard to believe, but the Fibromyalgia diagnosis is more common in women than men by about a ratio of 9:1. It's commonly agreed upon by those "in the know" that these conditions are normal side effects of leading a stressed, sedentary, and obesity or poor diet. The issue is that the healthcare system around the world is generally unable to acknowledge this and engages in the cycle of unwarranted diagnoses, unwarranted prescriptions, and unwarranted surgeries.
Do you have any idea just how much "chronic pain" or "chronic back pain" cases comprise workers compensation? How about social security/disability? Can you imagine how much of a drag these self-inflicted conditions can have on systems like the NHS? Where people just coast doctor to doctor, appointment to appointment, seeking treatment for something that can easily be corrected through a barbell and a modicum of effort?
part 1.

Just a question, how old are you?
Assuming something doesn't exist just because medicine hasn't pinpointed its cause/markers is extremely naive.
I could have agreed with you a few years ago but having been diagnosed with NDPH two years ago (at 19 years old, now finishing pure math undergrad) let me tell you: you don't know shit. I've had a constant headache for a couple of years to the point of really not remembering what is being completely pain free.
Modern medicine can only help you with acute pain, doctors have no fucking clue about chronic pain, specially if it is primary. At most they help you manage pain to a tolerable level.

I'm sure ancient doctors said the same to people who rejected the idea of humors.
