Why are engineers and mathematicians the least well rounded in the field of science?

They seem, like savants, to excel at one thing, and be terribly naive towards every other field of study.

How is this possible?

Mathematicians don't need to give a damn about science unless they want. It's science that needs math, not the other way around.

The fuck are you talking about? Engineers are one of the most employed outside their fields.

>starting a degree in math and physics this fall
>in the meantime taking a summer course in discrete math for comp-sci majors at a local university
>professor says something about the sum of to rational numbers is always rational. one of the students asks if he can prove it, and the professor says "no, it's an axiom".
>mfw

he makes about 5-6 mistakes every lesson (especially logical fallacies) and everybody just eats it up.
is it like this in every math course for comp-sci majors? what would you do?

If it's a summer course it's possible that person is a lecturer and not a prof, basically he's a glorified cs undergrad, that's the problem. Also the sum of a finite number of rationals being a rational is not an axiom, it called fucking addition. The reason why people are eating it up is because they don't care nor do they understand the material. Not all comp sci math courses are like this though, mostly since they can't afford to fuck up basic discrete math since they'd be doubly fucked when trying to program that shit.

If the universe is expanding against gravity where is it getting the energy to expand from?
13 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>9068466
I thought it was the energy from the big bang? Curious as well now. Not a science guy but stumbled on the board.
>>
>>9068466
it's paying energy... the universe is cooling
>>
>>9068549
The universe's cooling is a result of expansion not the cause.

>>
>>9068201
I'm assuming you are a troll, but to answer your question I'm assuming you want someone who did something important that you won't be able to brush off as just important mathematically.

The easiest to understand, in terms of their immediate impact, that I believe you will have difficulty arguing with, would be Alan Turing. Aside from the cryptographic work he did during the war, he laid the foundation for much of theoretical Computer Science, which was of critical importance in developing the technology with which you shit up this board.

People are always talking about going "back" in time or "forward" in time, but what if you went "up" in time? Would you end up in another universe? Could we build a machine to go up in time?
36 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
What does "going up in time" even mean?
We should first decide on what "up" is.
>>
>>9068001
If you can go forward or backwards you just need to go perpendicular to that
>>
you would be in the present moment

CS is a fucking meme. Its a waste of time.

Do not waste your time on it. You will not enjoy most of subjects and you will forget most of it because you will end up as C#/Java code monkey or as WebDev if you are brainlet.

Math/Thoery. physic + learning on your own C++ + Python + algos and networking is the way to find interesting and good paid job.

I wish I was smarter 10 years ago.

I work as java senior dev, but amount of money that my old friends makes as C++ programmer in bank and as quant are much bigger.

fuck it, seriously fuck this meme degree.

Researchers have demonstrated they can efficiently improve the DNA of human embryos.

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/608350/first-human-embryos-edited-in-us/?set=608342

The first known attempt at creating genetically modified human embryos in the United States has been carried out by a team of researchers in Portland, Oregon, MIT Technology Review has learned.

But Mitalipov and his colleagues are said to have convincingly shown that it is possible to avoid both mosaicism and “off-target” effects, as the CRISPR errors are known.

The study is going to be published and will show genetic engineering of embryos is successful and safe. That's not a big step forward? We could see a baby born from this technique in the next few years.

I made the same thread on /adv/ and /r9k/ but I was told to make one here as well.
Will "nofap" help me produce more testosterone or not?
I only care about testosterone for one thing - I want my hair to grow quicker. I have read different opinions:

>nofapping does help you produce more testosterone
>nofapping helps only if you nofap for 7 days, fap, and repeat
>nofapping does absolutely nothing to your test level
>nofapping rises test level, but only for a short time, and then makes it go down

So which version is the true? I would also like to see some proofs/sources of your guys' claims.
