Today when I was walking to my car I saw an enormous pile of ants. I thought I'd be a dick and let a huge drop of spit fall from my mouth onto them.
As soon as it hit them, they started freaking out and running away as if they were startled. The ants that got hit by the spit were writhing and attempting to free themselves while the surrounding ants abruptly started running away. Then, after a period of time, ants surrounding the spit actually seemed to suck up the saliva or transport somehow as it was pretty much all gone. They saved the ants that were trapped.
So my question is, how well do you believe the ants realized what happened to them, and did they consciously save their fellows?
>>9075144
They can only communicate through antenna and have no actual conscious whatsoever. My calculator has more intelligence than an ant.

Ants don't even feel emotions.
How would the scientific community validate or invalidate the findings of CERN without throwing equivalent piles of money at peer review to conduct independent experiments?
It seems like the findings are sort-of a religion if you cannot run the experiment yourself due to lack of multinational financing.
>>9075130
Exactly OP. We all know gravitational waves are actually a jewish conspiracy to prove (((Einstein)))'s theories. It is all now accepted science (see /pol/ for references) that Einstein was 100% wrong but jews have to save face somehow so they just poured all this money (not that much money, the so called collider is actually made out of cheap plastic and not functional, it is just for show. It is all CGI in the videos) into faking scientific results.
>>9075136
Not a /pol/ fag.
Do you have a billion dollars to test their results?
I'm not saying their results are correct or incorrect.
What if there is an unknown flaw in their rig?
They are like the Moses or Joseph Smith of science; they bring a message from God and nobody can validate or invalidate it.

Your cognitive dissonance is showing.
What is set theory? How difficult is it in undergrad? Worth taking?
Naive set theory is easy af. And yes, even physicists should be comfortable with the language.

Naive?

I'm learning C++ but I feel uncomfortable with programming.
I want to be able to break down a simple C++ program with a complete understanding of what is going on at hardware level.
If not from the physical point of view, from the logical.
Would be this excessively time consuming?
Mind you I don't really know myself what I am asking since I'm a complete ignoramus in this field.
Physics graduate and mathematician by training NEET at the moment.
>>9072582
I don't get it, how are you learning C++ if you don't know what the code is doing?
Literally me
>>9072590
>I don't get it, how are you learning C++ if you don't know what the code is doing?
I *know* what the code is doing but I don't know what is going on inside the magic box that is called computer.
By the way I'm using:
>A complete guide to programming in C++
>Book by Ulla Kirch-Prinz
Why are the rates of depression/ anxiety disorders increasing more and more? Shouldn't they be decreasing, evolutionary speaking? Or have they always been this common, but people just hid it? Or are most people today lying/ exaggerating about having these mental issues?
I feel like everyone and their mom is depressed these days

Should we lower IQ in exchange for better looking teeth?
>>9071169
I'm not sure what you're suggesting.
>>9071169
You better have some proof that it lowers IQ. An easy piece of evidence would be to list the IQ statistics of the countries in your graph.

Emmanuelle Charpentier is best known for her role in deciphering the molecular mechanisms of the bacterial CRISPR-Cas9 immune system and repurposing it into a tool for genome editing.
I wonder what /sci/ think of this scientist.

What are you studying today?
Are you working on a problem?
Do you have something to share?
Please feel welcome to talk about it!

Hey, does anyone remember that guy who made a group study on probabilistic robotics (or something like that)? I was wondering if someone participated and if the experience was worthwhile. It'd be cool to maybe gather and work through some textbook about an interesting topic (I have some in mind, but I'd like to hear other proposals first).
>>9070022
>probabilistic robotics
Do you mean topological robotics?

I'm talking about this https://warosu.org/sci/thread/S8418462

To the people here who studied/study physics and math in university - what were your favorite electives? And why?
>elementary number theory
i didnt get it at all during class, never revised, etc. It gets to exam time, start looking through notes... *click* - pants are off, hand unzipping dick, the works
then...
>algebraic number theory
what the fuck do ideals have to do with anything lmoa?? minkowski what? ---exam time--- w-wait i get it, but how does that solve the problem? *breathes in* *thinks* *releases at least two fluids* yahooooo!

It was just a discussion class where we talked about how science intersected with regular life stuff. I was in a group with exchange students so it was just a lot of laughs.

Is this book for students who have never seen a rigorous proof in their life or is it still a good supplement either way?
>>9073388
it's not for freshmen. Well technically you could read as a freshman and still get some insight of course but it's a preparatory book for analysis, with tips for studying analysis which is what you literally asked for.

What is the 1/2/3/4 of mathematics?

idk but I hit 105kg on strict OHP ORM
1 rep strict OHP was extremely easy for me to attain, idk why, manged to do it within six months too, never got beyond 2.5 plate squat or dead lift though

I'm also curious.
What would the four biggest/most important branches of mathematics be, that have "good" textbooks?
