>tfw too scared to try and learn more maths in my free time because if I find it hard it reflects badly on my IQ
I just picked up a copy of a book called "Math In Minutes" by Glendinning. It's perfectly suited for people who are interested in math but think themselves brainlets.
You could probably find a torrent.
when you were a kid
did you think that the sun brings dust because whenever it shines on something you can see the dust particules floating ? but when you became old enough you realized it's the complete opposite
well.math does the same thing, whenever you can't solve something and you put your mind into it , you become smarter
>>9061746
>not doing it exactly because its hard
The true mark of the brainlet. But if you really want to feel like a brainlet study some philosophy, even most of the acclaimed scientists/mathematicians are too retarded understand it.
Alright MATH majors, when did you decide you want to pursue this pure wonder of a major ?

i thought it would make me look smart
it turned out to be very interesting and fun (and it also made me look smart)

When I first read about the Banach-Tarski paradox.
So how long do we have until temperature rises to the point where you see tropical oceans boiling?
about 3 hours
>>9061597
Time enough for another iq thread
They stopped boiling a long time ago anon
Hello /sci/,
Suppose I were the type of person who is frightened by reality, and were to curl up into a shell whereby I pretend that nothing exists outside of some limit.
How would you convince me that the universe is indeed infinite?
probably hit you a few times
cant show someone what they dont want to see
>>9061468
oh yeah you can
but maybe you are too young for goatsie, meatspin, lemonparty, nimp, 2girls1cup
From an evolutionary perspective, why do people choose to study math?
How is that evolutionary advantageous to them.
>>9061443
Im going to have to ask you to understand evolution before I talk to you about it
>>9061443
Things like maths, music skill, humor, etc etc all evolve as a sort of test given by females.
To test the quality of your physical genes is easy. She just has to look at you, see your face is deformed, see that you're under 6'3 and instantly know you have shit genetics.
But mental processes are not so easy to see. So music, which is literally useless in every way, evolves as a sort of peacock feather. Like peacock feathers, music/math/humor/art acts as a "Proof of Good Mental Genetics".
It takes a certain amount of resources to build a brain that is better at music. Those are resources that could have gone toward productive things, like better hunting skills, better reflexes, but instead it goes toward something that is completely useless. So if you demonstrate high musical skill, you are demonstrating that you have so many resources that you have resources to burn. Females like this.
So you see, math is the ultimate pussy slayer.
Why u such retard m8?
Why?
>>9061431
>advanced
>>9061431
>mathimatics
why?
>mathimatics
spell it correctly before you complain.
What does /sci/ think of a human gene bank?
Basically, a bank of all human genetics which are donated and can be used for research purposes. Very similar to a sperm bank except for the purposes of genetic research not reproduction. If you want to test a hypothesis for a certain genetic disorder, you can request access to the bank's database and use it for hypothesis testing.
They'd be an immense amount of legal and ethical caveats, but would something like this actually be worth creating?
already exists

What is beneath all te ice ? Would it not be interesting to see if we were to melt everything with nukes ?
>>9061277
There is very little land at the north pole. on the other hand, I saw a documentary that said antarctica probably has pyramids with aliens inside. A conglomerate found it.
>>9061348
Who cares I heard aliens have low IQs anyway
>>9061277
?? Under the ice in the arctic region is the Arctic Sea - an ocean.
You mean what sort of substrate is on the ocean floor?
Or minerals below that (beside oil)?

Is it possible to calculate how far away an object is from where I'm standing using a compass?
If so how?
So far I think I can just aim a compass, get it's reading, move 10 pre measured paces and measure again. Subtract the two degrees and solve the right triangle I made but I feel like that's going to wildly inaccurate. Is there a better way?
I'm only curious, I'm not very smart.
>>9061248
Yes, you can. However, for things very far away, you can't be sure you're in line with it and 10 steps might be too small an angle to measure accurately, so your distance could be off by a lot.
It works fine for judging distances of a few hundred feet though.
angle side angle triangle
yes
>>9061581
>>9062969
Cool thank you.
I was thinking for bigger measurements walk to a 45 degree to make it an easy triangle to solve. Line of sight is definitely an issue though. Also the bigger the steps the harder it is to make a right angle with your line.
Willing to experiment and check with Google Maps or something
Why haven't we invented hibernation yet, /sci/? What's sate of the art in hibernation right now? How long until we will be able to hibernate for 100+ years?
I wanna go to deep hibernation so I can wake up in 200 years when all the cool shit has finally been invented.
Have they woken anyone up from cryo yet?
>>9060963
>Have they woken anyone up from cryo yet?
No... probably coz most died of cancer and we can't cure it yet.
>>9060961
Maybe if we start cracking open some of those old Buddha statues we might find some hibernators.

>there is no teleology in nature
>mental intent is self-evident in our conscious experience
>information itself is teleological
>any method of refuting this as illusion involves information and intent
Someone explain
>>9060862
def. teleology
Philosophy
the explanation of phenomena by the purpose they serve rather than by postulated causes.
def. information
facts provided or learned about something or someone.
The biological ability to learn is better explained by the purpose it serves rather than by postulated causes.
>>9060862
>information has inherent intent
No.
Who else has read The Secrets of Mental Math by Arthur Benjamin (and Michael Shermer)?
That shit rocks. There's a course out from The Great Courses too. I haven't seen that yet.
Math book aren't really reading now are they.
I suggest euclidean elements
>Could someone explain how a photon, which has no mass, in really move a spacecraft through the use of solar sails.
>How does the speed at which the photon exhibits such properties of causing motion of an object?
>What is the most scientifically accurate definition, or tied to a subatomic particle, of what a photon is?
In the past, I've heard that it may possibly be a charged electron, but that sounds a bit wrong...but in a universe of infinitely finite possibilities we can only assume. I know that momentum does have a big role on how solar sails work, but is there anything more in depth?
>Please if possible attach cite where good research into photons is made.

Oh I forgot, kids can't use wikipedia for school work. Sorry, OP.
Not anything related to school, just wanting to know how photons really work within a solar sail and 'light' system. Wiki isn't the best place for information.
How many of you nigs are going to watch the Great American Eclipse?
On my screen sadly (EU)

Got hotel room in Greenville, SC -- if it is locally cloudy, can run south-east towards Colombia (Colombia hotels are about gone unless you want to stay in the Roach Motel.)
Interstate parallels the line of totality there, both cities are pretty much right on the line. Might run south towards Anderson/Clemson, for a few extra seconds of totality, but just sitting in the hotel parking lot is also fine.
