What are your thoughts on dual majoring?
Does it end up being worth it in the end or make you more marketable to employers?
Anyone here who has dual majored, have you tried hang yourself?
Pic unrelated
Well I triple majored and am on the verge of suicide but that isn't really relevant to this thread

better off just getting the masters m8.
How likely is it that petroleum is produced without life?
It is my understanding that there are markers in the petroleum that insinuate it was once organic life, but now a few people in my group of friends are convinced about abiogenesis. Just curious if any of you have any experience with these hypotheses.
How the fuck else would it be formed?
>>7587257
A few people in your group of friends are uneducated morons.
Hello my friends. I have a problem for you today.
the reciperocal pythagorean identity is the equation:
1/(a^2) + 1/(b^2) = 1/(c^2)
Try finding the smallest solution for positive integers, basically the smallest sum of the numbers a,b, and c.
No cheating! The answers of course can be found, but a rigourous method for finding it is the challenge. Any monkey could make a code or guess and check it.
>>7587160
Please go away and do your homework yourself.
Really, it's not even that hard. Just literally check Wikipedia.
>>7587170
This is certainly not my homework, it was a problem for a math competition I supervised.
>>7587160
a=0
b=0
c=0
Now, this fucker doesn't have any legs, limbs or doesn't have any muscles. It's baffling enough to understand how they move around and chase stuff but how does it move so fast ? It's ridiculous.

Have you read about slime molds? Another example of an unintelligent, simple life form that does some pretty amazing shit.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slime_mold
They can solve mazes, when separated they find each other again and reunite, really strange.
>>7587047
Are you talking about the amoeba or the other two cells?
>>7587593
The other two cells that freak out. I have no idea how they can move so fast.
Even multicellular organisms like the tardigrade has completely evolved a multipedal muscular based system for walking as well as functions like eyes, respiratory and digestive tracts. And we're talking about an organism with 1/6th size of a sand crystal. This is bullshit.

But.... How??
Hey /sci/, I just finished highschool and want to get into studying neuroscience/something related by next year. I have to kill 6 months between now and starting military service (fucking austria) and would like to get familiar with the subject so I can decide whether or not this is something I want to dedicate my work/time to.
Could some of you anons give me tips on where to start? If possible weblinks/non expensive literature.
Thanks in advance
This is a pretty slow board so don't bother with bumps after just a few minutes. That being said I'm also interested in some good beginner resources for neuroscience so hopefully someone here can help us.
>>7586754
thanks I'll check it out!
/sci/, what happens when you start fiddling around with diamonds and lasers?
>>7586694
You go blind.

You mess with the third law. Don't mess with the third law.

Wait, so we can actually fly?
Jesus christ.
I'm currently a first year maths undergrad in the UK, on completion of my 4 year course, I will have a Master's degree.
What do I have to do to get into research?
One of my biggest worries to how to make a good application for funding, or even getting the PhD itself. Any tips? ...To be honest, I lack basic knowledge like what ever are the prerequisites to get into maths research, all I really know is that you almost certainly need a PhD.
>>7586664
...Note to self: Never forget that /sci/ is 80% high schoolers.
>>7586664
>Mmath
>Masters degree
Pick one.
If Research Experiences for Undergraduates are a thing where you live, I strongly recommend that.
Why aren't trials based on Bayesian reasoning?
Because it is illegal

Great job, you just increased the odds he is guilty from 1-in-10,000 to 1-in-100
Criminal cases are based on reasonable doubt, no the balance of probabilities. Probability estimates are not evidence. They're supposition, circumstantial at best. Given the ability for so-called experts to get the calculations wrong and for jurors to misinterpret results, it should be used very carefully if at all (that case of the Dutch nurse prosecuted for murdering patients is another example – see Bad Science).
This is not anti-science or anti-math. It’s recognizing what probability theory is actually telling you. After all, banks use very sophisticated probability/statistical analysis to evaluate financial risk. The use of these approaches contributed to the banks thinking their financial instruments were low risk on the downside, and yet the downside happened anyway. You want your guilt evaluated in the same way (even partially)?
I'm looking for advice on how to financially support myself for graduate studies at MIT and similar tier universities.
Say that I do get accepted to one of those schools, what's the best option? I heard you can work inside? Will that cover all tuition and living expenses?
>>7586270
no idea about top tier but I'm applying to a relatively non competitive school (gre in about 12 hours fuck) and getting a TA position doesn't seem to difficult. I think they get benefits like a meal plan and obviously pay per hour. If you do decide to live on campus I think that is covered as well but tuition is still up to you so scholarships might help
>>7586275
This may be a retarded question but can you be a TA off the bat? I'm not from the US.
>>7586270
they give you a stipend and a tuition waiver
how would you prove f(n) = a[sub]n using induction?
for a problem like f(n) = 2^n -1, and a[n] = 2*a[n-1]+1, a[1]=1?
i proved a 2 base cases, n=1, n=2, to both be true. i don't get how you prove f(k+1) = a[k+1] though..
>>7586202
a[n] = 2^n-1 = 2*2^(n-1)-1 = 2*2^(n-1) -2+2-1 = 2( 2^(n-1) -1 ) +1 = 2*a[n-1]+1
>>7586243
how much practice does it take to see something like this? i was doing scrap work for probably an hour after finishing the base cases and couldnt find anything close to this...
i left a soda can in my car last night and the next morning the sides were crushed in
can science explain this
>>7586056
Empty can or full can?
>>7586056
Simple.
The gas particles and liquid particles inside the pressurized can were okay all night until the sun started rising. The rising temperature made the gas particles start moving faster, hitting the walls of the can even harder, then making them bounce even harder in an endless process.
You may think that this would make the sides looked pushed out but this is where you need to drop chemistry bullshit and think about quantum physics.
So the gas particles kept going fast and hitting the walls of the can, then bouncing off with even more energy (from the potential energy of the can's walls) to the other side of the can. This process is endless, this means that the velocity of the gas particles were endlessly accelerating.
You may think that at some point they would reach the speed of light but they are stopped by relativity. If you are one of those high speed gas atoms, then relative to you the other gas atoms are not moving and you are not moving relative to the other gas atoms.
This sudden (as in EXTREMELY SUDDEN) change in perceived motion creates some sort of split-second semi-vacuum that then sucks the sides in.
But because the gas particles were stopped then the entire process stopped and the vacuum was degenerated, leaving your soda can looking just a little crushed in instead of turning into a black hole (thank you einstein, phew! that would be a problem)

not sure if DIY or Sci but here we go. How do I make rocket fuel. Liquid rocket fuel. I was thinking a alcohol + Hydrogen peroxide. How do I get the pure alcohol in order for the mixture to work?
>>7585887
Buy ultra pure kerosene. You can use lower purity but expect more coking.
