Hey, /sci/. I'm a pretty stereotypical fa/tg/uy. I know very little of astrophysics, biology, and meteorology. But I have a hypothetical scenario I want to explore that requires advanced knowledge of these subjects, so I'm asking you.

Given an 'earth-like' planet with the following traits, how would native plant life and weather differ from what we are used to here on earth?

>Earth like planet (nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere), slightly colder (cooler star but still yellow). One moon. One large ice-ring in orbit. 33 hour rotational period (day). 375 days per year (12,375 hours per year).

It's..... no, see, fa/tg/uy is the nickname that anons on 4chan.org/tg/ chose for ourselves. We're the 'traditional games' board. We talk about any games that aren't video games, or are videogames but that /v/ is too young and stupid to appreciate (old sierra games, text adventures, etc). Mostly, /tg talks about Warhammer40k and Dungeons and Dragons. The whole 'fa/tg/uy' thing is a self-depricating meta-joke mocking the stereotype of our kind of gamer being obese neckbeards. I'm actually in rather good shape, all things considered. But I didn't come here to educate you.

I'm here for you to attempt to educate me about this hypothetical. I could just 'make up' the answers, but I'd rather be as plausible as I can be. Helps to maintain immersion.

Can someone explain to me why a set being closed does not imply that it is not open, and vise versa?

I bought a 500 page book called "Set Theory and Logic" and there is NOTHING in it about set closure. Recommending resources to find stuff also appreciated.

>>
>>7673024
Because limit points are not the same thing as boundary points.
>>
>>7673024
This is a topological notion, not something you'd see in a set theory book.

Closed is not defined to mean "not open". A set in a given topology T on a set X is closed if it's complement in a given topology is open. The fact that a set can be both open and closed is trivial since the X and the empty set both must be open sets by definition of a topology, and so since they are eachother's complement, they're also both closed.
>>
>>7673024

Topologically speaking, the definition of closed is that its compliment is open. That means any set with an open compliment is closed. So if you have an open set, if its compliment is open then it is also closed. If you have a set that is not open, and its compliment is not open, then it is neither open nor closed. The problem with "open" and "closed" is that they imply mutual exclusivity, when in reality they're two different qualifications.

Hi /sci/,
Can you imagine an algorithm that can calculate the status of every major debate, based on rational principles that boil down to the current STRUCTURE of each debate? This algorithm is being developed and put to use in wikidialectics.org, and I think it's a great idea, but it will only become serious when a debate grows big enough. Do you think the system makes sense? Is it worth pursuing?
35 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
The current system is this:

Every debate has its own page, and the title of the page is the issue being debated written as a yes/no question. For example, Should suicide be legal? or Does God exist? The software calculates the current answer to the question based on the following algorithm:

- YES: At least one sustained argument for, and no sustained arguments against.
- NO: At least one sustained argument against, and no sustained arguments for.
- MAYBE: Neither YES nor NO.

By editing a page, it's possible to add arguments for and against, and objections to the arguments and to other objections. The software marks each argument and objection as SUSTAINED or REFUTED based on the following rules:

- SUSTAINED: No sustained objections.
- REFUTED: At least one sustained objection.

As new arguments and new objections start with no sustained objections (indeed, with no objections at all), they start out as sustained. This allows the software to calculate the status of every other argument and objection in the debate, and ultimately the current conclusion of the debate.
>>
This is a bit like http://www.riyarchy.com/, but more flexible and with the whole "calculate the conclusion" feature.
>>
>>7672995
So it doesn't evaluate the quality of the arguments, only whether or not there is an argument? Are many weak arguments favored over a single strong argument? Is personal experience weighted as heavily as statistically significant data? Lastly, can someone object to an objection? If so, would it start a new debate?

Please explain congruence modulo to a retard. I read lots of explanations but I still don't get it. What's the intuition behind it?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>7672770
Two numbers (a and b) are congruent by modulo n iff the remainder from dividing a by n is the same as the remainder from dividing b by n.
I find this way of thinking about it to be simpler, as then you can think about them as being the same distance from a multiple of n.
The other way of stating it is that two numbers are congruent by mod n if the distance between them (a-b) is divisible by n.
>>
>>7672779
To give an example with this guys story:
a = 9
b= 18
Then a and b are congruent in modulo 9,
Because if you divide 9 by 9, your remainder is 0.
If you divide 18 by 9 your remainder is also 0.
I've never heard of the concept, but I just understood it by the name. Why is this so hard for you?
>>
>>7672781
>Why is this so hard for you?

I get the definition, but I don't get:
>The other way of stating it is that two numbers are congruent by mod n if the distance between them (a-b) is divisible by n.

Does anybody else here have a tendency to think that their research, publication and thesis ideas are crazy, dumb, or otherwise irrelevant?

Here's my story:
>have an idea in the domain of application of Artificial Neural Networks to some specific, rule-based type of problem solving
>ask my professor whether it's retarded, and his thoughts on the topic
>surprisingly, he says that it can work
>ask another one who's more reputable
>he says something along these lines as well
>he gets me in contact (via email) with a rather known professor who specializes in this topic
>ask her for her opinion etc., and whether my idea is nonsense
>she says that it's a novel approach, that I should try working more on my idea; she also recommended some literature to help me

However, even after getting a more or less positive feedback from others, I still think that my idea is crazy/retarded/etc.
Does /sci/ have any advice on having a more realistic view on one's research ideas? Has anybody else had problems undervaluing their ideas and themselves?

What is the general /sci/ consensus and view of Genetic Modification?

In a recent announcement the first GM-Salmon was allowed by the FDA after 20 years of research and testing.

Personally I think this is great news, less feed required, faster turn around, more fish can be produced feeding more people, cheaper - also fantastic to reduce the strain on 'natural' wild salmon fishing.

frankly, food doesn't seem to be the best utilization for GM, I think things like the GM mosquito with the SM1 protein to block malaria parasite in the gut is a far better use for GM, or even the potential for GM creatures capable of absorbing oil or digesting plastics as a means to clean the ocean.

but is the /sci/ consensus, leave your 'Monsatan' hate at the door, your emotions need not apply to the debate.
