So I was reading all this shit and now I'm wondering can this be explained with reasonable somewhat scientific explanations.
>pic related
>"In the land of the Romans in the year 73 BC, a golden ball was seen in the sky, which then came down to the earth and rolled about and flew back up into the air again, in the direction of the rising sun, so that its great size covered up the sun completely. This was followed by the great Roman war."
Celestial Swordsman, Castle and Army Over Strasbourg
>"In the year 1531 a bloody vision with a sword in its hand was seen near Strasbourg and in other parts, as well as a fiery citadel and opposite that an armed host on horseback, just as is painted here.
Tiber Monster
>"In A.D. 1496, in the month of January, at the time the Tiber burst its banks high and wide near Rome: what wondrous creature appeared, found dead where the raging and the might of the Tiber’s waters had subsided, and was in this shape and form, as it is painted there."
I mean look at this weird fucker.
Comet
>"In the year 1506, a comet appeared for several nights and turned its tail towards Spain. In this year, a lot of fruit grew and was completely destroyed by caterpillars or rats. This was followed eight and nine years later, in this country and in Italy, by an earthquake, so great and violent that in Constantinople a great many buildings were knocked down and people perished."

this is my answer to OPs question
You can't just dismiss anyone who isn't braindead and/or delusional with a certain kind of hat. Also go back to /pol/
>>9104544
Science does not work with facts, only theories. You're wrong in that one.
here, for the fedora wearing faggots:

Ok, /sci/ If you're really so smart, lets put you to the test. I'll be posting screen caps of questions from an IQ test, and we'll roll for the correct answers, in the case that there is no consensus on the correct answer.
For simplicity's sake, I selected male, and 22, because that's probably the average, given how many people are still in university.

The only reason space colonies will happen ( at least on a mass scale) is if they will be economical and would enrich the colonizing countries.
Do you belive a marsian colony. Could do that? Are there many resources there?
Obviously now it would be to expensive to transport them back to earth but perhaps in the future it would be possible
>>9102702
This is the way it happened in the past, but "enriching" doesn't have to be about resources. Think of ISS. People there don't mine or physically procure anything, but they gain knowledge about living without gravity and how humans, plants and materials react to it. Regardless, a large colony on other planet (or moon or in space) would probably need enough resources to sustain the colonists, as people are not so keen to fund such endeavors.
>>9102740
Well, first of all, what type of research can you do on mars that you cannot do on earth. Everyone talks about how it would advance scientific research to build a colony there, but if we are to invest bilions of dollars in this endeavor, it should have practical implecations that would improve the taxpayers life, otherwise, it has no justification.
Second, even if the government would fund it, what would make people migrate to mars? During the colonisation of "the new world", the majority of people migrated to the americas out of the belief that the would gain a lot of wealth. If mars dont have that economic potential, why would people migrate there?
>>9102751
Are you joking? Mars is a whole another planet. That's a pretty vast research material. See, this kind of thinking is why NASA's funding is so shit. It always has to improve taxpayers life (read: I want to stay in my comfort zone). Some people want to broaden their horizons, you know.
Is there a board more dedicated to philosophic discussion than /sci/? Not that /sci/ is very dedicated. Just more so than the others I've seen.
Do not mention /lit/
Reality follows a set of axioms (physical laws) and is accurate one-hundred percent of the time.
This is true in the classical sense, but is it also true in the quantum sense?
>>9101038
What I mean to ask is if reality is always precise.
On another note, why is emergent morality not taught in schools alongside evolution?

>physicalism holds that all there is is physical objects and it's regularities
>intentional mental states are readily apparent in everyday experience
>information involves inferring, which is inherently goal-directed
>people intentionally hold naturalism and physicalism together at the same time and defend it with information they gathered
How is there not a conflict here? Can someone explain this to me?
Anyone?
>>9100816
>naturalism holds that there is no intention in physical objects (and more but let's leave it there for now)
False. Naturalism holds that everything originates with natural causes. If intelligence arises from non-intelligence than everything originates without intention but certain physical objects are eventually created with intention.
>>information involves inferring, which is inherently goal-directed
False. Information exists regardless of conscious observers.
>>9100816
Naturalism is pretty stupid when you think about it. It's amazing that it has so many fans.

Why are people so scientifically illiterate?

Squaring a number gives you the surface area of a square, cubing a number gives you the volume of a square, what does 4thing a number give you in relation to squares? Does it give you a value that relates to some property of a 4th-dimensional shape that's an extension of cubes?
In theory, yes
>>9103916
[math]x^n[/math] gives the [math]n^{th}[/math] dimensional volume of that shape. We just have a special names for 2-D

What should i learn in order to be able to solve feynman diagrams??
I'm an undergrad EE student and i'm interested in that.
>>9103840
Quantum Field Theory
>>9103840
Griffiths has a good book for elementary particles that's for undergrad courses
you just follow a formula if you're not diving into quantum field theory
[spoiler alert] a lot of the feynman diagrams you'll encounter are divergent in their integrals for scattering amplitude
>>9103840
What is this anyway?
Annihilation followed by pair production?
I want to get some modafinil. Is it worth it? How do I get it?
>>9103746
No. Internet pharmacy or perscription.
>>9103746
It's useful for combatting the effects of lack of sleep. That's all. It may help if you have ADD.
Most nootropics aren't worth messing with. Prl-8-53 was the only one that made much of a difference for me. All the racetams are trash.
>>9103746
Its all meme bs.
This may be a dummy question, but i couldn't find any dumb questions thread.
If you have a spacecraft in deep space, and it turns on its thrusters, the thrusters will start accelerating it. At what point will the accelerating stop and why?
Because i can't see any reason why it would stop accelerating, meaning you could reach light speed with a lighter if it had enough fuel, which is obviously retarded.
>>9103363
The problem comes from having to have access to the fuel, either by bringing it or by scooping it. That, and the need for infinitely increasing amounts of fuel as you go faster.
>>9103363
I assume the difficulty is bringing enough fuel to accelerate to near light speed, not to mention the time it would take and how much fuel would be necessary to reduce speed enough to do anything useful. And bringing enough fuel to slow down means you need way more fuel to to deal with that extra weight.
This is basic relativity OP. As you accelerate more and more you can get asymptotically close to lightspeed, the closer you get to lightspeed, the more energy gets converted into mass, and less into speed.
Never really studied relativity but this is the gist of it I think.
>time is a loop in space,, at some point in time ...time travel is invented,, therefor time travelers are here,, now.
>>9103337
>the future is the past
Too much Star Trek huh?
>>9103764
Not an argument
No. If time travel is possible, at one point we'd maste it, and yet we don't see time traveling dudes. Time travel to the past is impossible because we don't see any time travellers around.
How do I become smart? What should I do? Where to start?
Get yourself Ashkenazi parents so that you get the [math]\mathbb{P} \mathbb{H} \mathbb{E} \mathbb{N} \mathbb{O} \mathbb{T} \mathbb{Y} \mathbb{P} \mathbb{E}[/math].
>>9103295

I study to distract myself from the existential nightmare of real life. That's how I study 10 hours a day.
>>9103024
Then you miss out on the new...
>>9103024
I don't study 10 hours a day, but I study on "vacations" for the same reason
>>9103024
That sounds great, I can't focus on studies when I'm down, I just lay in bed all day. How do I learn to channel my energy into studying instead?
Is it possible for A to observe C influencing B, if A is outside the sphere of influence of C?
For example, can we observe the gravitational force acted upon something in our observable universe, if one of the objects exerting the force is outside our observable universe?
>>9102930
Is gravity constant in both A and C?
>>9102939
What do you mean? There is no gravity exerted on A in this example.
