Is getting a masters in mechanical engineering a good idea?
No if you have a Bachelors in ME. Yes if you have one in something else
>>7732625
What do you want to do? This is a very vague question.
>>7732625
NO YOU SHOULD GET A DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS INSTEAD YOU CAN GET ANY ENGINEERING JOB YOU WANT
>lol ur such a faget 4 studying mathematics
>shuld hav done engayneering like we smarties!
This is so funny. I was just now looking into the graduate school requirements for my 'sister' university that gives out engineering titles instead of license titles. I found out that most of them accept my degree and are 1 year long.
So let me get this straight.
Path of the engineer:
>5 year degree
>Graduate with the title of engineer
Path of the mathematician engineer:
>4 year degree
>graduate with a license in mathematics
>1 year masters degree
>graduate with a masters in engineering
>5 years
>Licensed Mathematician and Certified Engineer
The masters literally guarantees that I would be your boss if I were to take this route. So what is up with the hate? It is the smarter way to do it.
But even then I won't do engineering.. It is simply not attractive to me.
What is YOUR excuse?
>>7732476
>>5 year degree
what shit university is that?
All the engineering degrees ive ever seen are 4 years
>The masters literally guarantees that I would be your boss if I were to take this route
no it doesn't, an engineer with a masters and no work experience almost never gets a job. the couple of people I know who did this were turned away because they are 'overqualified' for the positions available in their experience bracket.
>>7732498
>4 years
The engineer curriculums I saw included a 9th semester that mostly had to do with law and business related to engineering. So it is not a 5th year entirely they still have to do it.
>overqualified
That is probably the one negative point of doing this. However I've seen that most people considered overqualified actually are PhDs. I mean, companies know that a masters is no more than an extra year. They can hire you without you expecting a huge raise in the salary, contrary to PhDs that can be an 8 year endeavor and will obviously demand to be paid much more.
I think that a masters is pretty safe. I think it is all about doing good in the interviews and you will likely be chosen over regular engineers.
Once you've seen the beauty of physics or maths you can't ever become an engineer it's not possible
>tfw C+ in Orgo I
I'm never going to get into pharmacy school am I?
Why is this dumb class so fucking annoying? I can't even imagine how hard Orgo II is going to ass rape me.
>>7731820
Why pharmacy if you don't like ochem?
>>7731944
I like pharmacology and biochem. I just hate the useless mechanism bullshit of orgo and stuffing 16 chapters on one exam.
iktf lad
>B- in Ochem
>As in Physical and Analytical chem
it's literally just applying logic to dumb trends, and then getting ass raped on tests because there's SPECIAL cases that override your previous logic
fucking hated the class
I'm studying to become an engineer, and someone said to me that the best way to do it is to "learn how to learn." Does anyone have any tricks for learning material quickly/efficiently?
>>7731486
Is that Dubs? The mascot from UW?
He's the best.
>>7731486
>engineer
meme degree, you'll be fine
>>7731493
It's the most versatile degree in existence. You can apply to medical school and if you don't get in you're still an engineer. You can take the Mathematics or Physics subject GRE and get a high score and get into pure math/physics grad schools too.
I don't really know which board I should post my question on, but I assume this board is filled with people from the United States.. so here we go.
I am a Dutch citizen applying to M.I.T., to do that I need to do the SAT + 2 subjects. However, only one date is left, the january one. I can't take the SAT and the 2 subjects on the same day.
Does this mean I have to wait another year? I know it's quite late to apply to a university, but waiting a year really sucks.
Also, to keep it related, how hard is the Math level 1 and Biology SAT?
If you have to ask about the SAT's difficulty, you shouldn't be applying to MIT.
>>7731278
This. If you were MIT material you would have looked this up about a year ago. You can still go for it though OP. Yes you will probably need to wait another year if test dates don't work for you.
>>7731268
mark pls go
Would you take a Critical Thinking OR Symbolic Logic class?
>>7731098
No. Probably not.
>>7731098
Critical thinking is something you should have developed on your own as a child. Taking a class on critical thinking is like taking a class on breathing or walking. Only the most deficient individuals need it, and they are most likely so deficient that they cannot even learn from it.
>>7731101
this is the course description
>This course is designed to bring students to a critical awareness of the function of argumentation in the various forms it takes, both in the academic realm of logic, as well as the everyday world of television, newspapers, and other forms of communication. Students will examine how arguments are constructed and the means that are used to make an argument convincing. They will learn to critically analyze arguments in order to detect careless language use and fallacies. They will also learn various types of arguments. Students will be graded on weekly problem-solving homework assignments and re-writes, collaborative fallacy presentations, a mid-term exam, and a comprehensive final exam.
Is the multiverse plausible? Are there good science reasons pointing to it?
>>7729836
It's a meme
>>7729836
In some alternative universe, I'm with sweet 80's Molly. Reason enough to believe.
Just finished a B.S. in Applied Math with a minor in Econ. Ask me almost anything.
Are you going to grad school or Wall street?
>>7729782
>Applied Math
>>7729788
Data analysis route, going to read grad school books on econometrics, machine learning, etc. since I don't like school.
Also long-time programmer so C++ w/ Python sounds cool.
Does /sci/ enjoy astrophysics?
>>7729558
Yes, I love astrophysics! But I must ask what is that image you posted? I looks like some kind diagram for a space hole or something of the like. Why is that bright light culminating in the center of it?
>>7729614
gods asshole ofc
>>7729558
My astronomy teacher once told us a lot of it is speculation, don't know how i feel about it now.
Are stars just a meme?
How are the expending so much fuel proportional to their mass?
It's literally insane.
Nothing can possibly burn for that long. NOTHING.
WHERE IS ALL THAT ENERGY COMING FROM?
And please dont shitpost with your primitive compressed matter or reaction theories.
Common metals are as far as the universe will allow densities to occur, there is very little room for higher densities, and matter is not squishy either. Each molecule of matter is an absolute size what does not change shape.
And there is no type of reaction which is possibly describable by human science which would allow such a condition of a star burning for billions of years.
>>7728850
They get regular fuel deliveries via Amazon Prime.
>>7728850
>burn
>a star burning
Lrn2fusion fgt pls
>>7728863
yeah bro
its ok to call it burning
molecules are flying out of it at a rate of 'you dont fucking know' per second
where are they coming from?
nothing can possibly burn for that long
inb4 shitty neutrino density theory
you cannot possibly be cuked any harder by faggot neutrinos which probably dont even exist
Anyone else here that can do calculus in their head but can't do simple arithmetic in their head even if their life depends on it? I have all A's in every single math course including all my calculus courses but I can't do simple math really fast so I end up using a calculator
i can't do long division for shit. i have to look it up every time i try.
It's probably quite common. An effect of doing calculus all the time but never practicing mental arithmetics.
You just described me perfectly. First year calc is peasant tier and I can do large geometrical calculations/ complex integrations in my head but I struggle with basic addition and subtraction that a middle schooler could do faster.
why are universities in canada so expensive?
>$3500.00 per semester
the fuck is this noise?
£4.5k in the UK ~$9.3k
Kill me tier desu, sucks that science in the UK is on it's knees too
>>7727802
What's even more surprising is that STEM undergrads generally cost less than social sciences/humanities by 400-700 dollars, for some fucking reason
>>7727802
>15k/semester
>public school
Welcome to America, faggots
Wats the hardest class in ur major?
Catastrophe theory
>>7723262
Just looked it up. That seems so cool.
>>7723258
Reactor engineering. Though it's very easy at some universities where the lecturer is retarded.
Simple question if this could be reduced any further and if so what exactly?
2/20 = 1/10
u retarded m8?
Underage b&d.

Quality thread.
>reading random non-fiction book
>mentions Alan Turing proving some random CS related stuff when he was 24
>I'm 22 and I'm exambabbying my way through chemical engineering
>despite my good grades I have done NOTHING EVER that is intellectually impressive or original in any way
>even if I did well in chemeng I still would be shit compared to the physics / maths / CS autists
Is chemical engineering academia respected? I feel so intellectually useless.
pls tell me that the maths / CS / physics autists are doing useless rubbish. I can't handle being so worthless in comparison with them.
Why the fuck do we even have engineering degrees when a guy with a physics degree could learn anything I know within 20 minutes, but not vice versa? What was the point of my fucking degree?
>>7732711
CS was babby tier back then
>>7732711
>Physics major false flagging trying to start a major politics thread.
/sci/ is pretty stupid, but not that stupid to fall for this.
Anyway since major politics is retarded I'm hijacking this thread.
>>7732711
>Alan Turing
Turing is overrated. Allied propaganda made him overrated so they can steal the patents for the computer without making it seem like more Nazi science they looted.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konrad_Zuse
A German built a general purpose ELECTRONIC computer 3 years before his stupid mechanical atrocity was even up and running. This is despite his work being bombed 2 times and having minimal resources as opposed to Turing who had a peaceful time with huge support from the eternal Anglo's many resources.
On the theoretical size Zuse beat Turing too, developing the first general purpose language called Plankalkül which is still studied even today (it's "Turing" complete btw)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konrad_Zuse#Plankalk.C3.BCl
If you're into major politics nonsense he was in fact an engineer, but if you're not retarded you would've figured out by now that undergrad is irrelevant and it comes down to individual talent and hard work after graduation that really makes a good researcher.
>>7732711
come on OP, im cheme student and I had similar thoughts as you do, but I dont think physicist are able to learn our material in 20 minutes, physical chemistry? fluid flow? analytics, inorganic? For us it might be easy but trust me for some people its fucking drama to learn these things.
We will be able to find job very easy, and if we want we can go deep into science by for example phd so we lost like nothing
Why dont you go to some research group? Im in electrochemistry research group on my uni and its pretty dope.
If you work hard enough maybe you will be the next tesla of chemistry :D he was an engineer too so..
